jdfellow··on The FDA wants you to be able to buy a hearing aid without a prescription
I use their passive ER20SX ear plugs for concerts and love them. The active hearing protection they make look great but rather expensive.
jdfellow··on When did we start signing our names to authenticate documents? (2011)
I'm 31 years old and have never written a check in my life. I've never even bought a checkbook. If a card doesn't work, I use cash, or in a couple of edge cases I've used a cashier's check.
jdfellow··on How Well Can You Hear Audio Quality? (2015)
Can't say I did well on the test. Actually made a decision on 2 of them and got the 128kbps on one and WAV on the Suzanne Vega (which must have been luck). The rest I just clicked something to read the snippets.

And I've got HD598s and was listening through a UMC1820 interface.

That said, I'll take lossless FLAC files for a download any day, simply because it's future-proof in a way compressed audio isn't. I'm quite happy to listen at 320kbps on Spotify most of the time, or transcode to 96kbps Opus any FLAC I have when I load it on my phone.

jdfellow··on In praise of --dry-run
I think I've done --really when doing something similar.
jdfellow··on Why are there two ways to write the lowercase letter ‘a’? (2015)
It's admittedly a bad habit of mine, but I write lowercase "g" like a numeral "8", only translated downward a little. It has two loops, and gets the point across (when I know it's only myself who will read my scrawl.)
jdfellow··on Ask HN: What do you think will come after Kubernetes?

jdfellow··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
Years ago I switched at a time when Chrom[e|ium] had a better developer tools console than Firefox (although only slightly better than Firebug). But, nowadays the console is equal if not better in Firefox to Chrome.
jdfellow··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
This is honestly a killer feature! I use Temporary Containers and load the AWS console in a fresh container automatically, making it very easy to switch between accounts and have multiple open at once. (Caveat emptor: be sure which account you're using at any given time!)
jdfellow··on Links are not buttons (2013)
Given that the default method is get, and you have to set method=post for otherwise, I'd suspect it's been around longer than method=post.
jdfellow··on Netflix lost 9% of the market share as competition increases
Comparing the way Hollywood is going as compared to Spotify, imagine if each of the big three music companies (Universal, Warner, and Sony) had their own streaming services. Unline movies though, nobody usually cares what label their favorite band is on, let alone which supergiant owns that label so you'd never be able to find which streaming service each artist is on.
jdfellow··on Modern CI is too complex and misdirected
I've been wishing for one of my small projects (3 developers) for some kind of "proof of tests" tool that would allow a developer to run tests locally, and add some sort of token to the commit message assuring that they pass. I could honestly do without a ton of the remote-execution-as-a-service in my current GitLab CI setup, and be happy to run my deployment automation scripts on my own machine if I could have some assurance of code quality from the team without CI linters and tests running in the cloud (and failing for reasons unrelated to the tests themselves half of the time).
jdfellow··on Ask HN: What may be causing high-pitched noise from computer case?
What sort of glue? And thanks for asking the question that I should have asked.
jdfellow··on Ask HN: What may be causing high-pitched noise from computer case?
That was next on my list to investigate. How might I go about trying to pinpoint it?
jdfellow··on I Want a New Duck (2020)
I've been using pyright for a couple of weeks because other LSP backends for Emacs weren't working well and only pyright seems to have any future. I am quite happy with its fast and effective type checking and it's not very hard to make it happy unlike mypy.
jdfellow··on Ask HN: How are you hosting static website these days, with SSL
GitHub Pages or GitLab Pages may be suitable.
jdfellow··on Firefox 86.0
I didn't know about the Ctrl-9. Thanks.
jdfellow··on The largest library of historical European martial arts books and manuscripts
I've trained in HEMA, in the German Kunst des Fechtens tradition for about 3 years (this past year, not much). Wiktenaur is my primary resource for sources. It's a brilliant website. They've also published a 3-part side-by-side compilation of the major Liechtenauer treatises which I use regularly, and I believe an updated 5-part compilation is in the works.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this link up on HN.

jdfellow··on A Poetic Apology: Or Why Should You Use Poetry to Manage Python Dependencies
The direnv layout for poetry works wonders!
jdfellow··on Maximizing Developer Effectiveness
Likely rumors that the company will be hiring or contracting overseas.
jdfellow··on Ask HN: Best Free Python Editor?
Emacs has been working for me for several years now.
jdfellow··on It's not what programming languages do, it's what they shepherd you to
I think that the author of the article specifically speaking of configuration DSLs that were intended to be Turing-incomplete but somehow grew full Turing-completeness and therefore became bastard languages. YAML as a config DSL is sub-par (but I'll take it over JSON any day), and truly declarative, Turing-incomplete config languages are great, as is just using a fully-featured scripting language such as a Lisp or Python, but the middle-ground with a custom config language that is also Turing-complete is usually just bad.

Not sure I have any examples of what that might be. Perhaps nginx? or apache? Lots of complex software have very complex config languages that might accidentally be Turing-complete, but only fools would actually use them like that.

jdfellow··on Why SQLite succeeded as a database (2016)
I've heard Postgres pronounced as if it were French. "Postgree."
jdfellow··on Indian police open case against hundreds in Kashmir for using VPN
Thanks for the insight.
jdfellow··on Indian police open case against hundreds in Kashmir for using VPN
Yeah, one that's nuclear armed and constantly on the brink of war with its nuclear armed neighbor.

A bit worrying, no?

jdfellow··on Indian police open case against hundreds in Kashmir for using VPN
Since when was India a nation? It's got dozens of languages, two major religions (one of which is more of an ecumenical blending of ancient practices), and many ethnic groups and cultural norms. A nation is by definition homogeneous or nearly so across these variations.

By my estimation India is an empire, and nationalism makes no sense in its context. Patriotism maybe, or political loyalty.

Just seems like a weird choice of political propaganda. I do understand there's a strong anti-Muslim attitude in India, which might be what they're calling nationalism. But it doesn't seem right.

jdfellow··on Time.gov was upgraded today
Map gets me wondering exactly which meridian within these time zones does solar noon match up with clock noon.
jdfellow··on Grave of Walter White
I learned a new word, though. "Antepenultimate." And penultimate was already one of my favorite words.
jdfellow··on 13.3" full color ePaper display

jdfellow··on Apple AirPods: iPhone accessory or the next big thing?
No doubt that Sony becoming a major media company has hurt their consumer electronics business.
jdfellow··on You might literally be buying trash on Amazon
Funny enough last time I needed to do an Amazon return it was the easiest thing ever: they take returns now at Whole Foods locations so all I had to do was go to the cashier at the grocer around the corner. The Whole Foods acquisition is still an odd choice in my opinion for Amazon, but this was a great move.
