jddj··on A warning about 'model welfare'
To extend on your edit #1: And, when you go back in time, delete all punishment for murder and see whether you get the same number of murderers.

If you get more than before, the punishment might make some sense in a deterministic world so reinstate it.

jddj··on iPhone Duo
You can get something quite useable these days by plugging a pixel into a USB dock with a monitor and a keyboard + mouse
jddj··on I resigned from Anthropic today
For temperatures not survivable by humans we're talking about a sustained wet bulb of >=36C

On whether it's probable, I'd lean towards no but I'm not qualified. The certainty that I read in the parent comment was mainly what I was pushing back against. On a re-read though it's much less certain (either edited or perhaps I massively misinterpreted it the first time around). Runaway implies positive feedback which is hard to gauge, was all I intended to say

jddj··on I resigned from Anthropic today

Typically the email domain of a user is enough for those sorts of claims.

It probably shouldn't be, especially for university domains. But here we are.

I'm a native English speaker, but I was a young kid as well and so I remember learning a lot of the puns and wordplay in English much later on in life after first seeing them in that game. I'm sure another playthrough would reveal even more.

"Stick in the mud", "Wallflower", those sorts of thing.

I remember in Kings Quest 6 you can meet a guy early on in the bookstore which becomes relevant (but not critical?) right at the end. I never knew how relevant though, as the time I played it through right to the end wasn't one of the times when he'd happened to be in the bookstore early on.

I guess that's not enough of a dead end to block progress.

Maybe it'd be enough just to know what happens in the castle if Prince Alexander had befriended him. Otherwise I guess I'll carry that unresolved thread around with me for another ~25 years.

Edit: went looking for spoilers and yeah, alternate ending which admittedly sounds better than the one I got

jddj··on 'Pervert glasses': Backlash against Meta's smart glasses grows
I think, sadly, this is the expected result.

Imagine if tomorrow we invented ubiquitous instant teleportation to arbitrary locations.

There would be a moment where we hear how great it is to eliminate commutes, or air travel, followed shortly afterwards by the collapse of civilisation as societies grapple with the elimination of property, what remains of private space, and so on.

jddj··on Claude Code: Starting August 14, auto mode will be the default permission mode
The majority of the times I reject a tool call it's because I can tell the agent is about to go off piste. Eg. adding packages to work around some non-problem is a common one.

I guess I could try to actively interrupt it in those moments, but that seems less effective.

More power to those who want to use it like that though, I guess. Perhaps by throwing in extra agentic guardrails, or whatever the idea may be. I don't think it's the best route to a good product or business but let's see.

I'm sure it was a chatgptism first, but I wouldn't accuse a western company of distillation.

In all fairness, maybe it's just that they let some post-2022 recipe blogs get into the training runs around ~4.6-4.8 time

jddj··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
> Venus is similar in structure and size to Earth, and is sometimes called Earth's evil twin. Its thick atmosphere traps heat in a runaway greenhouse effect, making it the hottest planet in our solar system with surface temperatures hot enough to melt lead — about 872 degrees Fahrenheit (467 Celsius).

jddj··on Tell HN: Namecheap gave my account to an unverified third party
That sounds more like a phishing attempt than anything a real company should send.

I think I have one domain left with them. I haven't received anything yet, but it's a good reminder to move on.

jddj··on AI Companies Are Trying to Hide a Staggering Amount of Debt
This is going to sound a bit facetious, but I'm almost certain the Gmail / maps integration on my Samsung galaxy in 2014 did that.
jddj··on Making
I struggle to even remember the course grained details of things I've had AI do recently.

jddj··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
You could give it a vpn to a public cloud provider so that even if they run residential proxies they still get a dirty vps IP.

Admittedly this doesn't stop the presumed screenshotting and microphone use and worse

jddj··on Oracle could face $7B collateral bill for Wisconsin data centre
Rent compute out at insane margins is plan A.

Still, capital isn't getting any cheaper for them and their CDS are still climbing.

Also lots of "genuinely" and some air quoted phrases which are another tell.

I guess you folks are right and it's probably the llm filter. I looked at the GitHub and thought it had too many screenshots to not have had some human effort, but who knows these days.

I can't really tell why this comment got flagged, so I've vouched it.

Maybe I've missed some context

It can be as similar to or as far from outsourcing as you allow it to be.

The "if AI code breaks, who will fix it? -> "AI will fix it" exchange has (anecdotally) been very common among executives, which is much closer to outsourcing than programming.
