jcroll··on WeWork and Counterfeit Capitalism
> And if we restore laws against predatory pricing and centralized financial control, the entire counterfeit capitalism model will go away.

What's something the average person can do to help make this a reality?

jcroll··on The boring technology behind a one-person Internet company (2018)
I ran a small company like this quite successfully earlier in my career. If you think this is awesome what goes unmentioned is how lonely it can get. Also, any issues you have (business or technology) you bear the brunt of alone. A coworking space doesn't really help either imo, if you like working with others you will miss having coworkers. Just something I think worth mentioning if you think this is something you might want to pursue.

jcroll··on If Seeing the World Helps Ruin It, Should We Stay Home?
You can curb the consumption of anything with a tax, unfortunately getting the political capital to implement one is another thing. It looks sadly like the climate will have to change quite a bit more until that possible
jcroll··on If Seeing the World Helps Ruin It, Should We Stay Home?
Wait, walking outside is a sin now
jcroll··on The Antonine Wall was the real final frontier of the Roman Empire
A wall in the north you say?

jcroll··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
For Flask what would be the better option?
jcroll··on PySnooper: Never use print for debugging again
I come from the php world now coding in python. There used to be a very nice library from Symfony called VarDumper: https://symfony.com/doc/current/components/var_dumper.html that would just pretty print variables you dumped to the browser in an easy to consume form. Is there anything like this in python?
jcroll··on 80% of the Web Powered by PHP (2017)
Have you tried Symfony?
jcroll··on [dead]
I still don't buy a UBI. I thought I did but the more I think about the Trump movement and why his followers are so angry giving them a monthly stipend is not going to help. They're angry because they've been made to feel worthless in a new economy and Trump is right, they do need jobs or at the very least something to make them feel of value. What about green energy jobs?
jcroll··on Launch HN: Axdraft (YC W19) - Legal documents for startups in minutes

jcroll··on Boeing 737 Max pilots complained to feds for months about suspected safety flaw
> The News found at least five complaints about the Boeing model in a federal database where pilots can voluntarily report about aviation incidents without fear of repercussions.

Is this a lot?

My brother did this, it works
jcroll··on Amazon Pulls Out of Planned New York City Campus
If they bought before people knew Amazon was coming and sold now would they really lose anything? Probably still kept up with the price of inflation even now
jcroll··on Principled GraphQL
I believe it makes life easier for consumers. What about if you have to maintain the api? And if it is that much harder to maintain is it really a smart choice unless the surface area of your api is the size of say Facebook's?
jcroll··on Principled GraphQL
Have you had to maintain the graphql server
jcroll··on Principled GraphQL

jcroll··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
"The Naked Ape: A Zoologist's Study of the Human Animal". Looking at humans as just another animal through the lens of a zoologist is eye opening
jcroll··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
Despite not liking their model do you still read their articles?
jcroll··on Want to Stop Fake News? Pay for the Real Thing
I pay for the NYT but only after getting a 1 year deal where it works out to $8/mo, after that it jumps to $20/mo. If newspapers want to compete for paid online subscriptions they should be more in line with Netflix and Spotify and be a flat $10/mo
