Why is libvirt unfortunate?
jcrben··on Open Source does not win by being cheaper
Why would a SaaS provider expose themselves to catastrophic risk of reimbursing a large enterprise for the enterprise's lost profits due to downtime? I think refunds of the cost of the SaaS are sort of common, but that's quite different and capped.

"Oracle offers no financial compensation (e.g., credits, refunds or otherwise) in the event a Service Level Objective is missed." https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/General/Reference...

jcrben··on Open Source does not win by being cheaper
I don't think liability payments are that common. As someone who helps in analyzing software purchase decisions, it's certainly not something I hear people bring as a major factor.
jcrben··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
Screen real estate, ease of linking, etc.

No, I don't want a desktop app. For one, I use all three os platforms regularly and it's just annoying to think about getting it on each.

jcrben··on Show HN: A “CRM” for personal relationships
The lack of a web app is a deal breaker for me.
jcrben··on Install Windows the Arch Linux Way
It mentions hitting Shift+F10. Wish it mentioned how to that non-interactively.
jcrben··on Windows Subsystem for Linux gets new 'mirrored' network mode
I use msys2 bash sometimes to collaborate with people and projects who are using it. Adoption of WSL2 is still a work-in-progress at secure enterprises.
jcrben··on Windows Subsystem for Linux gets new 'mirrored' network mode
I've been using git for windows / msys2 bash for a while on top of WSL2 - you don't find it to be annoyingly slow?
jcrben··on When deployments are easy, code becomes simpler
My experience is kinda the opposite. Big companies get into certain workflows and don't want to change, altho they are happy to take bugfixes. This is also where I'm at with much of the software I rely upon, some of which I pull at my own whim.

jcrben··on It’s time to embrace slow productivity (2022)
One problem of delaying the coding is that it takes 5 minutes to dream up requirements that could take a millennia to complete. Coding is often the hard part actually, especially in some of the large slow moving corporations where coding is often delayed by lots of requirements brainstorming.
jcrben··on Frank founder allegedly defrauded JPMorgan out of $175M hit with federal charges
No, they lost limited partners money, which is to a large degree pension money.

Not sure how much VCs coinvest in their own funds but I'm willing to bet most of their retirement funds are not in VC investments.

What is Sat Interactive Brokers? I've used Interactive Brokers for a long time and never heard of Sat.
jcrben··on Poor sleep drove me insane, and my long path to recovery
I had a somewhat similar experience altho different diseases. First one was gluten, and even after I figured that out it took a long time to recover from the brain fog and various aches and pains.

More recently, Crohn's, altho that was more straightforward medically. The lead up to Crohn's was a period of working too hard and going out too much in San Francisco.

jcrben··on Geothermal may beat batteries for energy storage
It also doesn't consistently depreciate the way that batteries do.
jcrben··on SEC Charges 16 Wall Street Firms with Widespread Recordkeeping Failures
Why would people risk being out of compliance for no reason?

Given what we know about insider trading on Wall Street (and LIBOR etc), most likely there was a lof of incriminating discussions. And there does seem to be some evidence in the case of Nomura.

jcrben··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
It's an interesting article from 2004; might not be reading it right but seems like this one from 2020 is less optimistic about hydroxyl radicals (OH) breaking down PFOA in the atmosphere. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31978654/

Your same link notes that the majority of PFOA is not broken down in the atmosphere and points to "wet and dry deposition" mostly, which sounds like it's being dropped down to Earth remaining as PFOA.

jcrben··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
Citation? I tried googling and couldn't find anything to confirm that.

When I searched on half-life, the results that came up mostly seemed to discuss the half-life in the body, not the half-life in an environmental sink such as the ocean.

jcrben··on It’s raining PFAS: rainwater is unsafe to drink even in Antarctica and Tibet
Since PFAS never really breaks down and we're still creating it, is a 200 ppt inevitable at some point?
jcrben··on Ask HN: I’m 41 and still unmarried – what should I do?
All this talk about men being threatened by your career - eh, I really can't relate. I wouldn't focus or worry about that. I'd just recommend working to accept older male features: balding, dad bod, maybe not too tall, etc.

Have you read the story of Chris McKinlay hacking Okcupid? https://www.wired.com/2014/01/how-to-hack-okcupid/

Your post could be a personals ad of sorts but you stopped short of inviting readers to reach out directly and inquire about a date

jcrben··on HSBC exec suspended after comments about climate change
And how do you cope with the numerous species which will die, the coral reefs which are largely already dead, and the scorching heat waves causing a feedback loop to spin temperatures even higher?

There's not one thing, and it's not easy to predict actually what will happen with this epic experiment.

It's sort of filed already, you can see https://github.com/microsoft/PowerToys/issues/3170 and the linked issues
jcrben··on PowerToys – open-source Windows utilities
I found that IT at work wouldn't let me install powertoys because they didn't like the Awake feature. Please bundle these in of allow us to install them one by one.
jcrben··on I have never read a business plan or balance sheet
I don't think they're public - it was just a narrative business plan (under a section titled business plan) required when an insurance company submitted an application for a license to sell insurance in the state of Alaska. Each state has similar requirements (NAIC model law).

It also included a background check on the management IIRC

Can you link to an example SMB business plan? I once tried to help a neighborhood grocer with financing and I can assure you they weren't writing a sophisticated business plan.

jcrben··on I have never read a business plan or balance sheet
Well, that business plan looks fairly similar (albeit more detailed) to the legally required plans I used to peruse as part of my old job. I've never been a banker so I don't know what the business plans you're talking about look like

I do think the plan you linked to is more thorough than what the majority of SMBs will be writing. YC is another league of finance. Most SMBs I know are not very sophisticated

jcrben··on I have never read a business plan or balance sheet
In a prior life as a regulator I read formal business plans (legally required) which probably looked quite different from what you're talking about. It's a generic noun used in various business contexts.

The business plan for a startup pitching to a VC will look different than the plan an SMB submits to a bank

jcrben··on I have never read a business plan or balance sheet
This is all just semantic nonsense. YC has no more profound understanding of the noun "business plan" than anyone else in the business world. Don't overthink it
