Does the home assistant Android app allow you to login with your public url?
jck··on Exposing a web service with Cloudflare Tunnel
I've been running caddy (with the cloudflare addon) to serve local services on a https url.

I then set my local dns(Adguard home) to redirect my url to it's lan url. Additionally, I run cloudflare tunnel to expose these services on the internet.

This allows me to use the url for internal services both at home or through the internet while having proper auth through cloudflare access when accessed over the internet. It was been working great for me so far

You're describing a pleasant low population density situation which is a nice romantic fantasy a lot of people long for. I don't blame people for wanting that, but you must realize that it is the exact mentality that leads to suburban sprawl.

I think on aggregate, that is more expensive (financially and environmentally) than high density cities. Take all the infrastructure which needs to be built out for these small cities (roads, electric grid etc) which serve a very small number of people and now imagine if everyone lived like that and multiply that cost with building out this infrastructure for a many many small cities. Building 30 small idyllic villages instead of one hong Kong would end up having a larger environmental impact.

Weylus is awesome. Works really well and pipewire, hardware encoding support are huge bonuses.

The killer feature which sets it apart from deskreen is a way to run it as a service on Linux. Last I checked, it was practically impossible to use deskreen on a headless machine.

jck··on Ask HN: Gmail account security
I personally had a great experience with google support when I once stupidly locked myself out of my account. The whole thing was resolved in about 3 days.

However, google customer service is definitely erratic since loads of other people have had bad experiences. The best thing to do if you're using Gmail is to enable 2fa and backup the recovery codes offline and somewhere safe. This could probably get you into your account without needing to talk to support.

You could use readwise.io (a paid service) to import your highlights from Google play books and many other services. Readwise offers an API which would help you process those annotations easier than parsing the google doc

jck··on Hidden Networks in TP-Link Routers
My TP Link wifi router loses the ability to list connected clients if you switch it to access point mode.

I discovered that this problem affects many models and people have been posting about it in the tp link forums for many years and have only received annoying "we'll look into it" customer service responses.

I will never buy a router I can't put openwrt on again.

jck··on “Open source” is broken
I really dislike the way you phrased that. Are you saying that things don't have value unless you have to pay money for them?
jck··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
Google definitely changed something about how they index or prioritize GitHub sometime in the last year. I used to frequently use Google to(successfully) find GitHub repos based. Lately, this does not work for me anymore; adding "GitHub" to my search query helps sometimes but I'm forced to search directly in GitHub many times.

I only downloaded a few albums off what.cd since I only had a laptop and bad internet back then and couldn't maintain the ratio their standards demanded.

However I gotta say, their content and organization was better than any music library (legal included) that I've ever seen. It is truly a shame that we lost it so the labels thought they could make more money. I would guess that humanity might have lost some rare lossless records.

Full disclosure: I don't know who this guy is and hadn't heard of him before today.

> Get a job, like most of the rest of us, and stop being a public figure. That's what I'd like

This seems a bit harsh. Are you saying that anyone who has done something wrong should be permanently shunned and no longer deserves a voice in society? Should he also fully isolate himself and stop having friends and just not say anything ever again?

I used to volunteer to teach elementary and middle school kids computer engineering. I believed we had better engagement when we stuck to "real world" tools (such as breadboards instead of littleBits, Arduino instead of Scratch)
