jc_811··on Mudge Back at DARPA as CIO
For those who can’t see the tweet:

“I’m back at DARPA, but this time part of the leadership team as DARPA’s Chief Information Officer (CIO).

I’ll be at Defcon this year on stage with the Agency Director talking about larger picture items, and hopefully even greater ambitions than when I last keynoted BlackHat/DefCon as a DARPA PM.

We all pulled off real magic the first time I was at DARPA (~ 2010-2014). In addition to helping stand up I2O as the agency “Cyber” office, a lot of the magic created through things like Cyber Fast Track (CFT) were due to the direct participation of this community.

The projects, designed to ensure they gave back to this community, continue to evolve and grow today!

Let’s see if we can make an even bigger dent in the universe this second time around!

Kindest,

Mudge”

jc_811··on What I Saw in the Darién Gap
Hi OP here - this is not an argument for or against anything. Rather just a reminder that whichever side you are on, or whatever you are advocating for, just to remember we are talking about humans. That’s the only point I was making.
jc_811··on What I Saw in the Darién Gap
When commenting about how this affects economic policy, immigration reform, military involvement, the causes of why we’re here, laws, title 42, migrants, justifications, and everything in between..

Remember that these are people just like you and I. They, like all humans, are seeking safety and stability for theirselves and families. The difference is that they were born, or ended up in, situations so dire they felt they had better odds trekking through the dangerous jungle(!) on foot for hundreds of miles (followed by thousands of more miles) rather than stay in their current situation.

It’s easy to get lost in the thousand foot view and giving opinions while sipping coffee & working on a laptop commenting on hacker news. Not to say any of our opinions aren’t valid - but rather just think about the people before jumping to any conclusions

Edit: This is not an argument for or against anything or any policy. Rather just a reminder that whichever side you are on, or whatever you are advocating for, just to remember we are talking about humans. That’s the only point I’m making.

jc_811··on California DMV puts 42M car titles on blockchain to fight fraud
A question I have is, is this a real implementation of blockchain? Or a marketing implementation.

If it’s real, and someone somehow steals someone else’s title (eg elderly scam or something of the sort) - does this mean there’s no recourse? Or is the state a centralized power that can re-assign titles at will? In that case, would a strongly managed traditional database have worked?

Genuinely trying to understand what blockchain brings to to the table here when taking into account real world issues and mistakes.

jc_811··on AI has created a 'fake it till you make it' bubble that could end in disaster
I’m not sure this is the best example of the power of an LLM. Not denying there are actual uses cases, but simply searching Google “Lime movie Jack the Ripper” will display the answer in the first result (and I imagine would have been able to do that for the past 10+ years)

jc_811··on Tesla's self-driving tech ditched by 98 percent of customers that tried it
How is that misleading? Genuinely feel like it’s saying the same exact thing you just stated, just the other end of the percent. 2% converted, therefore 98% chose to not convert (aka ditch)

jc_811··on is AI the future of learning?
Current LLMs will always have to deal with garbage in, garbage out, issues. Perhaps in the future the industry will shift left and whoever is guaranteeing the data accuracy/quality that feeds the models will become increasingly more powerful
jc_811··on How to build a $20B semiconductor fab
What a fascinating article. It truly blows my mind just how advanced humans have become. When playing angry birds on an iPhone we tend to forget the insane amount of research, resources, and specialized expertise that has made all the modern tech world possible.

I’d also highly recommend the book Chip Wars by Chris Miller for anyone looking for a deeper dive into the history and current dilemmas of the semiconductor industry

jc_811··on Tell HN: I think there are major issues with Google –> Squarespace domains
Following up, over 2 days have passed since opening my ticket with SquareSpace support (after waiting 72 hours for DNS), and I have not received a single reply.

I've edited DNS records for multiple domains that have not propagated at all.

As far as I can tell, it looks like there are major system-wide issues with SquareSpace domain's DNS records propagation. Doesn't seem like it works at all.

Can ANYONE in this thread confirm they've have DNS records propagate correctly after a domain was transferred from Google -> SquareSpace?

jc_811··on Google Quantum AI
Sounds great, but we need Web3 in there! Or are we already onto Web4 or 5?

jc_811··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
Thanks for spelling out your points, and I agree on some while disagreeing on others.

However, I in no way, nor ever would, say or act like he is literally Hitler. I’m not sure where you got such an extreme comparison from my comments about calling him out for unrealistic & hyperbolic statements.

I think at this point we can agree to disagree and see what the future holds for both Tesla and Elon

jc_811··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
Valid point, you're right that was more of a "let's have fun" than an actual reveal. However that doesn't change the fact that it's now an actual reveal.

On the earnings call he said the robot should be in production by the end of this year, and being sold by the end of next year. And implied it will:

- Be more valuable than everything else combined

- A sentient humanoid robot that is able to navigate reality and do tasks at request

- There is no meaningful limit to the size of the economy (whatever this means)

And finished up by saying "So that's what's going to happen"

I don't think I have Elon derangement syndrome, but I just can't take him seriously with how wildly inaccurate so many of his claims are.

jc_811··on Tesla Profits Drop 55%
Remember that robot Elon "unveiled" that turned out just to be a person in a robot costume?

He is saying[1] that this robot will be in production before the end of this year, and:

"Will be more valuable than everything else combined because if you have a sentient humanoid robot that is able to navigate reality and do tasks at request there is no meaningful limit to the size of the economy. So that's what's going to happen"

How does anybody take him seriously as this point?

I will never understand why Elon decided to go all in on the Cybertruck. Did anyone, at any point, think this was a good idea besides himself?
jc_811··on Ask HN: Front-end devs, what is your current db and backend of choice?
How/where are you hosting it?
jc_811··on Ask HN: Front-end devs, what is your current db and backend of choice?
Definitely agree with you! When building I fully expect to learn and become comfortable with whichever auth system I'm using, just to start I need one with everything included to avoid attempting to build one myself.

Thanks for the link, will definitely check that out

jc_811··on Ask HN: Front-end devs, what is your current db and backend of choice?
Hi - really appreciate the response here! This is one of the areas that's given me confusion, as a front-end dev I'm not totally familiar with how to securely set-up auth on the backend. My ideal tool would take care of this lift for me. Tbh I was surprised to see people commenting on concerns for Supabase auth as (from what I can tell) it's a battle-tested production ready platform.
jc_811··on The invisible seafaring industry that keeps the internet afloat
I actually loved the presentation of it, kudos to whichever team collaborated on it!
jc_811··on Ask HN: Front-end devs, what is your current db and backend of choice?
Some initial findings I've seen are:

Supabase. Pros: affordable, production ready, and seems relatively quick to get up and running. Cons: Some have mentioned security concerns around how they handle auth, and potential complexity around having lots of application logic at the DB level

Nhost: Seems like a really great Supabase alternative, strong focus on graphQL. Con: they are new with a very small team which always concerns me in the case they need to suddenly shut down in the future

Xano. Pros: Probably the quickest to get up and running and delivering JSON to the frontend. Cons: full "no code" solution as opposed to "low code". They do advertise as being turing-complete and able to do anything code can do, but full no-code always gives me pause for a production application passed an MVP

jc_811··on 15 Clicks to install an app from the web using the newly proposed Apple flow
Here is the thread:

It takes 15 clicks to install an app from the web using the newly proposed Apple flow. Here's the journey:

1. Visit the website for the download link. Click on a unique deep link.

2. Encounter a warning about the unknown provider. Click "Learn More."

3. Navigate to an Apple support page for instructions.

4. Find the “allow installation” section in settings.

5. Encounter another warning screen.

6. Use Face ID to proceed.

7. Wonder where you were and go back to the browser.

8. Tap "Install" again for the app.

9. See a confirmation sheet; tap "Install."

10. Face another scare screen and confirm.

11. Use Face ID again.

12. Nothing seems to happen; you're back on the website.

13. Check your Home Screen and swipe to the last page.

14. A new icon appears, not marked with a "New" bubble.

15. Finally, launch the app.

jc_811··on Mexico's Investment Boom
I would think the 2020 number was more due to the pandemic craziness. It was ~18 in January 2020, then shot up to 25 that April. Now it's back to 16.80
jc_811··on Why new hires often get paid more than existing employees
There’s an easy explanation I haven’t seen anyone touch on. When you’re an existing employee, the company has more power. When you are a candidate, you have more power
jc_811··on Ask HN: Why, during the year 2023, does iOS still autocorrect .com to .con?
It's the same with me for were and we're! It baffles me when I'm typing and it autocorrects to the incorrect one.
jc_811··on Fidelity has marked down the value of Twitter/X by 65%
In my opinion, he doesn't care about anything except being known as the guy who... For example:

He doesn't care about going to Mars. He cares about being known as the guy who went to mars

He doesn't care about transitioning the world away from fossil fuels. He cares about being known as the guy who transitioned the world away from fossil fuels

It just so happens that "being known as the guy who did something" generally correlates to the "thing actually being done". But for him that's just a nice side effect.

If you told him the world could have all of his goals with the caveat being nobody would know it was him who did it. I don't think he'd ever agree to that.

Again, just my opinion, but based on his public actions and antics this is what I currently believe about him.
