jborichevskiy··on Ask HN: Do you wake up with anxiety?
Lots of good advice in this thread. For me:

Most mornings I wake up and feel reasonably ok. I've had much darker periods in my past and think I'm in a pretty good place these days.

I try not to check my phone right away and instead read or write a bit as the day gets started.

At least two walks outside in the sun with music or a podcast or silence.

Meditate every day. Work out or run daily. Try to eat reasonably clean, lots of veggies and fruit.

Journaling a few times a week. Therapy twice a month, mostly focused on relationship stuff.

Time every day to focus on myself, my hobbies, my friends, good music, drawing, writing, reading.

No notifications on my phone while I'm trying to focus. Clear communication with my team around deliverables, dates, and issues.

On the philosophical front, reading Alan Watts' Wisdom of Insecurity helped a lot.

To add to this: if the religiosity of modern Christian denominations is off-putting - I recommend taking a look at Unitarian Universalism. If I _had_ to pick a church to try and attend today that didn't grate with my morals, I'd probably start my search here.

This has worked for me, but when on a handheld device I'm paranoid of cutting half of my face off or keeping myself in a weird position.

I wish it had a two-tone high-contrast filtered version of myself, that I could use merely for positioning. Might be a potential solve?

Fair enough. I absolutely agree that having a source of income not controlled by another legal entity is the ideal place to write from, and I look forward to being there myself someday.

Wishing you luck with writing in whatever form feels most comfortable!

Out of curiosity, why the desire for anonymity - particularly if the subject matter is technical in nature?

I imagine it considerably harder (not impossible!) to convert anonymous blog posts into contracts/job leads, compared with something that has your name and work history attached.

Of course, I'm not ignoring the very real potential downsides and repercussions to writing online about politics, religion, drugs, etc - but based on your posting history here your interests would do plenty fine on a general purpose blog.

Hah! What an ironic mistake. Glad the message still got across

> Which sucks, because I've also realized that networking is the only true "hack" in essence to get past the drudgery of coding interviews / otherwise opaque career ladders

You seem like you write pretty well - have you thought about blogging/twitter as an alternative to sifting through people at meetups in person? I've found it to be much more natural and easier as well.

This is a cool idea, nice work. I’ve long wanted something like this, but with the option to include long-running terminals sessions as well and my IDE configuration. Something akin to Mac’s Spaces but allowing an instance of an app across multiple Space collections.

jborichevskiy··on Digital Tools I Wish Existed
Author here. In some sense, I agree. The internet has too much incredible stuff on it, more stuff than a hundred human lifetimes would allow for enjoying, much less remembering/understanding/learning.

I think I desire these tools more out of the frustration I experience in working with, sharing, and remixing the little content I did/do have enough time for.

My hope is if I spend less time getting highlights and information from one platform to another I could spend more time arranging them into something interesting.

Out of curiosity, where'd you get the $20k estimate? Their docs [1] give a $15-75k range, but I haven't contacted either of the two companies actually authorized to do the audits yet and details about the process are a bit scarce.

Either way - it's a huge chunk of change. Would be happier if it were on the lower end of that price range for sure.

> The web is still a very young medium, and it has been influenced more than anything else by print media design. There is so much more that can be done with text on a screen than is being done today. Citations, drawing, chat, speech-to-text.

So true. Feels like we're getting closer to harnessing the true potential of writing and teaching with hypertext. Great work here!

jborichevskiy··on Squad Wealth
It's serious, though I agree it's a bit muddled in all the memes and references.

The core point as I understood it: the internet is quickly blurring the line between a company and a group of friends working together. Two of the limiting factors are our communication tools and financial/corporate structures.

My take: as this model become more prevalent, more alternatives to traditional employment and education routes open up allowing creators, researchers, and engineers to work on interesting problems without having to find one another through educational institutions and corporations.

For ebooks specifically (not PDFs) I find the Kindle is lighter and has a number of nice features like the built-in dictionary and Amazon's X-ray view making it much more comfortable.
jborichevskiy··on ReMarkable 2.0 – A digital notebook that feels like paper
I have the current version, and between my Kindle and iPad Pro and spending 10 hours per day in front of my laptop I don't use it as much.

However, there is no better device on this planet for reading long-form PDF documents, research papers, or scans of textbooks. It wins. I wish the annotations were more useful (they're sort of kept a separate layer) but the reading experience is great.

Andy Matuschak has some good notes on the current version here too:

Great point, I agree GPT-3 & related models will open up interesting avenues for this process.

I have not played around with it, but I can imagine querying it through a structure like LearnFromAnyone [0] where one would ask for a sentence (paragraph? document?) re-phrased in the style of a chosen person or group of people.
