jborichevskiy··on gpt-oss-safeguard: A new milestone for open source safety infrastructure
This is pretty cool to see. Glad to see the weights published. Currently it seems the best we have is OpenAI's `omni-moderation` model series or private models by companies like ActiveFence etc.
jborichevskiy··on Show HN: Handy – Free open-source speech-to-text app written in Rust
Congrats on launch! I need a physical handy next for sure
jborichevskiy··on Show HN: LocalScore – Local LLM Benchmark
Congrats on launching!

Stoked to have this dataset out in the open. I submitted a bunch of tests for some models I'm experimenting with on my M4 Pro. Rather paltry scores compared to having a dedicated GPU but I'm excited that running a 24B model locally is actually feasible at this point.

author here- great to know, thanks!
jborichevskiy··on The cochlear implant question
This seems like a really thoughtful compromise, a meeting-in-the-middle that keeps optionality as open as possible for the child.
jborichevskiy··on Autogenerating a Book Series from Three Years of iMessages
Big fan of this library. Thanks for making it!
jborichevskiy··on In Search of a New Tab
Oh, very neat. Do you know if they do it with PWA or some other approach?

> But why not put it on the web?

I probably will, at some point. I take my writing laptop out to nature a fair bit and would like the Obsidian links to still be present if I'm offline. I recognize there are other ways to do this though, local HTML file was simply the dumbest and simplest place to start.

Huge fan! Excited to follow along and especially stoked for mmm.town. Keep up the amazing work

Love your website!!

> So now my question is why do you need to make your online connections offline?

I don't believe it a necessity, and there are some online friends I probably won't be able to meet for a while, if ever.

But I enjoy moving a conversation offline because no online interface can replicate wandering between parks in Los Angeles and having pizza slices together. Though interfaces can still allow plenty of unique forms of expression -- just vastly different from embodied exploration and reacting to the world together.

> To summarize, finding friends on Twitter is kind of like shooting in the dark.

Aptly put. Not unlike dating apps or applying to jobs or talking to strangers at bars. It's just one additional avenue for meeting people.

You mention the separation between individuals getting algorithmically sorted and interest-based topics. In my experience I find twitter to be both: emergent scenes or corners form by a bunch of independent actors interacting with one another regularly, even though not all are following one another. The edges are fuzzy and overlapping but they have much more "placeness" than an endless feed, even if it is in fact experienced through a feed.

Hey Brendan!

> even if not everything pans out, it's about increasing the surface area for serendipity, opening up more possible paths, planting seeds

Well said. Like taking daily walks in a neighborhood, getting to know the rhythms of a place and bumping into whoever else might be wandering around. Eventually magic happens!

jborichevskiy··on Sounding the alarm: How noise hurts the heart (2021)
Yes! These seem to last at least a few months each when left under a pillow (rather than stuffed into a backpack or something which degrades them faster).

jborichevskiy··on Sounding the alarm: How noise hurts the heart (2021)
Another happy ear plugger chiming in. I have them in every backpack and suitcase now because it makes falling asleep anywhere a fairly consistent experience -- along with an eye mask to be complete. These are the best ones I've found so far:

jborichevskiy··on Ask HN: How to move away from Google
I've had some success requesting password resets on services I signed up with Oauth to get a chance to set an actual password. Sometimes this seems to expose the internal account management, but it really depends.
jborichevskiy··on MacPaint-themed interface for Tldraw
For anyone curious, the underlying tool is https://www.tldraw.com/ -- an absolutely delightful open source project I've been obsessed with.

jborichevskiy··on Why the West is reluctant to deny Russian banks access to SWIFT
Curious to hear about how A/C use is culturally avoided. Is it seen as a negative social status signal to have the convenience? Or is the environmental impact a consideration?

jborichevskiy··on Ask HN: What motivated you to learn to code at a young age?
I wanted to make more complicated Bukkit plugins for a Minecraft server I administered. Thus began a dive into Java, then Javascript, Python, Elixir, and now Solidity.

jborichevskiy··on Ask HN: What're some great cities to live for $2k USD per month?
> go east outside the city to a colonial style town like Valle de Bravo

I didn't realize there are longer-term stays here. Would this be found via Aribnb or elsewhere? Also, how near would it be to food/coffee/groceries/etc?

jborichevskiy··on Ask HN: What're some great cities to live for $2k USD per month?
Biking is an option, Condesa/Roma/surrounding areas are very walkable. Ubers are on the order of $3-6 USD. And there are busses.
