jbms··on Ask HN: What are some good resources to learn safety-critical C/C++ coding from?
Useful resources: colleagues, professional training, case studies of errors.

If your job is safety critical software I guess they'd pay for relevant training. If not, looking at the course outlines at least lets you know what trainers think are important topics, for example

https://www.feabhas.com/content/robust-software-embedded-sys...

One training course I had talked about how to design a system with integrity while integrating open source code of unknown integrity. Since software quality and safety critical software depends so much on process, then open source by default isn't built to any integrity level. If a system needs two independent implementations of a calculation, an open source code base would never show that.

If you have an experienced safety engineer, ask them about how typically to design the system and software to make the safety case easier and they'll have some ideas of what needs to commonly be done. It depends on the integrity level what strategy and process needs to be followed.

It's not just the code style, but there's a broader mindset that you need to develop.

There's also good presentations and lectures that come up from time to time here or on YouTube where the failure of safety critical software is studied. These can be excellent case studies: Such as: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31236303

jbms··on Ask HN: How to negotiate salary with a remote distributed company?
This is now complex as there's two parties.

Maybe the company would pay you more but the recruiter either:

- told them you're cheap, mistakenly or not

- wants to get you in cheap so they get follow on work

- doesn't know you expect a lot more

- is getting a bonus if they find suitable cheaper candidates

- doesn't yet know what you're telling us and so hasn't passed on the feedback on the poor offer.

- would be happy to fight for higher pay as they're paid a % of your annual rate.

jbms··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
Thanks for letting me know about Kialo. It takes a pro-cons approach breaking things down into modular claims. What's not enough?

A claim could be A->C

Supported by separate claims: Since A; A->B; B->C, etc?

jbms··on Gravity Energy Storage: Alternative to batteries for grid storage
In countries where big industry is gone the main demands become consumers, and so it becomes consumer loads on the grid that need to change to adapt to supply. That's more complicated than a few big industrial users being paid to turn off equipment. There's many more stakeholders to coordinate.
jbms··on All systems go for UK’s £55M fusion energy experiment
It's not 10-11MW heat out for 1MW electricity in. It's "500 MW plasma from 50 MW of injected thermal power" which would need 300 MW electrical input. After conversion back to electricity, it might give as much electricity out as is put in!

jbms··on Ask HN: I'd like to learn vocals, any suggestion on how I can do this?
I personally got a lot of benefit from singing teachers who posted daily vocal warm-ups on Youtube that you can try and sing along to, and they tell you what to do and what not to do. Exercises to separately work on and develop your posture, airflow, vocal chord usage etc are useful as you can improve the individual parts. I'd never had any vocal training and am not trying to be amazing - just to improve and have some control and consistency. Some also post classes, where you can see them coaching others and learn from them.

Particularly I'd mention Eric Arcenaux: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5hS7eukUbQ

Listening to podcasts by performers about their daily routine might be useful if you want to know what they need to do to care for their voice in order to be able to perform daily.

jbms··on Ask HN: I want to resign with nothing lined up
I've heard folks saying something along the lines of: "People don't leave a company, they leave their direct manager".

i.e. a sideways move into a different team in the company or asking for a mentor (e.g. 10 years ahead) outside your team might make a big difference to your job satisfaction.

jbms··on Ask HN: Will we see investments in fighting infectious diseases?
There's sure to be people who are now aware of this as an important area and are learning about it, who will now go into this for their entire careers.

"Glasgow's first Intensive Therapy Unit was developed, consequent to a large outbreak of poliomyelitis in Denmark, with many of the patients there requiring artificial respiration." https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pathology-Human-Infections-Associat... This led to a pathology department, and my grandfather working in that his whole life (specialising in infectious diseases), and then writing a 3 volume encyclopedia on the subject: "The Pathology of Human Viral Infections and Associated Conditions"

jbms··on Open Source Time-of-Flight DIY Lidar
The video is impressive. I liked seeing the speed it spins at, and I liked the demo of how an AGV can explore and build a map of its surroundings.
jbms··on Ask HN: Is anyone working on open source DIY artificial ventilators/respirators?
Fundamental stuff that can go wrong with ventilator patients who don't have ventilation:

Death.

jbms··on Show HN: Tagx.io – Create/share video highlights and annotations
With a plugin, people could bookmark/label/index videos themselves within YouTube in a way that is more powerful than what the playlists allow and without needing to resort to browser bookmarks.

Being able to distinguish between "my tags" and "public tags" would be necessary.

jbms··on Spain builds submarine 70 tons too heavy due to wrong decimal (2013)
Some ideas:

Hire people (on good money) with the personality type that likes to find problems. If the team is all composed of "Mr Right-Now" and no "Mr Right" personality types then it will move very fast and have lots of issues. A diverse team helps.

TDD tries to insist tests are developed first, partly to ensure they're not skipped.

Reinforce the message: "Measure twice, cut once".

Good leadership and top-down support to make changes are important. If they won't care enough to stump up the money and follow through to check it's happening, don't expect much change.

jbms··on Tesla Surges Above $500, Leaving Analyst Targets in the Dust
Automakers don't like gas/electric hybrids as they are more complex to design and manufacture than either gas or electric vehicles.

Fuel-cell/electric hybrids are a different value proposition and will keep going.

But they'll increasingly drop gas hybrids and jump to full electric, perhaps after the next generation of vehicles.

jbms··on Ask HN: I've been slacking off at Google for 6 years. How can I stop this?
It's an extraordinary difference when you look at what proportion of engineers (outside of London/Finance) earn £80k in the UK vs $105k in Denver.

jbms··on Sundar will be the CEO of both Google and Alphabet
YouTube is part of the Google division of Alphabet as it makes money primarily from advertising.
jbms··on Ask HN: How would you bootstrap a space company?
Move to Glasgow (like Spire did). It's got a bunch of companies making cube sats & cube sat software & satellite data analysis.

Clyde Space will sell the bits to make a cubesat or even build it for you. https://www.aac-clyde.space/

Alba Orbital do the same thing at a smaller (& cheaper form factor): http://www.albaorbital.com/

Add a sensor that you can sell the data from. Make a deal to sell the data. Use the money / guarantee of the deal to raise money to fund the satellite development and launch.

jbms··on The magic of generating new ideas
Talking about them may be to see which ones resonate with people and are perhaps more valuable to do. Ideas people can be full of ideas and so they don't hold them too dearly because they'll have more ideas tomorrow. Sharing them's a way of testing and dismissing the majority that won't get traction.
jbms··on Ask HN: How do you share/organize knowledge at work and life?
My team's got OneNote notebooks stored on shared network drives, which works very well with same the benefits you list.

To open the notebook and be able to start typing (or pasting in from email etc) is a very low barrier of entry, compared to say using a Confluence wiki page and having to login then click edit.

jbms··on Ban kids from loot box gambling in games
There is permanent damage if you rewire your kids brain chemistry to get addicted to the near-miss of getting something good. Logical explanations don't undo that.

I understand from a Louis Theroux documentary on gambling addicts that it is the feeling of the near miss that is actually addictive and not the feeling of the win. Gambling addicts are used to winning and so they don't get a buzz from that.

jbms··on Ask HN: How do you deal with an offshore team that is vastly underqualified?
Honest feedback. Say when it isn't good enough. Point it out.

I've never tried this, but as an idea: can you redirect their questions to a full team chat and get their own team members to solve them? Saying "ABC asked XYZ" might put the onus on them to up-skill their team and it might also show you who's able to answer their questions on their side. After a while they might just ask their questions directly in that.

jbms··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Atlassian Confluence?
Navigation is about how you've structured things as team/company. Perhaps creating additional directory pages would help to get different views on all the pages/data in the system?

Speed: Does the server have enough RAM? Is it running with the recommended database for fastest use? Atlassian offer some guidance: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/performance-tuning-1302...

jbms··on Ask HN: Do you reuse components from your previous projects?
Identify when you're solving a problem that isn't a one off. Solve it in a way that also works for the other situations you expect it is needed (i.e. make absolutely everything that's unique to this first implementation a configuration item outside the unit or callable via an abstraction/extra interface from the specific use). This is easier to do if designing something for multiple places at once. i.e. Make it modular from the start. This requires more work up-front.

I work in embedded so we reuse: device drivers, MCU abstraction layers, communication protocols, key (to our business) areas of application level logic.

Reusing components is about reusing design, which ultimately means you're reusing/extending a specification as well. If up front you can define the specification to be standard for a bunch of projects you can plan for a lot of reuse and justify the upfront work.

jbms··on Idaho sets record low solar price as it starts on shift to 100pct renewables
Lead Acid batteries are extremely recyclable. Li-Ion batteries aren't setup for it yet but that'll come, however in the future many grid batteries are second-life (e.g. former automotive batteries that don't hold their full capacity) so they're recycled without energy input (except transportation.
jbms··on Backcountry Drug War
Lots of companies are building constellations of small satellites and advertising how their imagery can be used for agricultural purposes. Assuming this stuff needs the sky to grow well and can't be grown under tree cover then changes could be observed.
jbms··on Ask HN: Over 60 = no engineering jobs?
I (UK, aged 27 at the time) hired a contractor who was aged 73. We needed someone with a variety of experience to help us through a particular need, and a recruiter found him for us.

He was brilliant: He knew a lot, did a lot, and still wanted to learn. He kept his skills up-to-date trying out a new technology every year for personal projects. Having contracted for years he'd been in lots of companies and that also gave a lot of variety of skills and experience.

Edit: He worked 4 months for us, and we'd have kept him longer but he had plans to travel around Europe in his caravan for the summer.
