jblock··on Automated home brewing system
NI had a section of demos like this at their technical conference this August. They were all hobby projects. Things that engineers just thought "were cool" and were stupidly easy to make with this hardware. There was a crane game, a 6-foot-tall aluminum slingshot controller for Angry Birds, and a compactRIO-powered guitar amp.

It's startling to think of how much money/time engineers save with prototyping and graphical system design software like this, and even though NI stuff powers telescopes and water filtration systems and loads of other important stuff, things like this come out and remind everyone that there's fun to be had.

jblock··on The Amazing iOS 6 Maps
I couldn't care less about what Apple was thinking before they released this. What matters is that they pushed out a living, breathing UX fuck-up of an application to millions of people that depended on it to get around.

Pretty common.

jblock··on Samsung to run a national media campaign against Apple beginning Sunday
Unfortunately, this IS how people differentiate between Android phones/iPhones. It's not good by any means, but there's a reason they do it.
jblock··on Something is wrong with my generation, i.e. what happened to the social network
The author never talks about this "meaningful content" he wants to see on social networks.

Why can't people just impulsively think that their food is photogenic and cool and take pictures of it? The author has no right to determine what is meaningful because that is the point of the social NETWORK. The rest of the population determines what they think is meaningful, and they shove it down everyone's throats. It's not a status symbol. It's just how people talk on the internet nowadays.

jblock··on Forgoing College to Pursue Dreams
Easier said than done. There's a lot more at play in their lives than "go to college again" and "don't go to college again."
jblock··on Quora Co-Founder Charlie Cheever Steps Back From Day-To-Day Role At The Company
When I met him, it took me a few minutes to realize that he was the founder. He spoke about Quora and the associated technology therein in an amazingly casual way.

He sold it to me without even really selling it.

jblock··on Google+ Will Dominate Facebook - Here's Why
...and the college students most likely already have Facebook accounts.

The author discusses all these things that would be great and engaging if that content the students are going to be posted to G+. The problem is that it isn't. It's going to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, and adding more pretty features isn't going to change that.

jblock··on Show HN - We just built a site that saves lives
I'm in love with the idea, but the frequency that payments get bounced via Kickstarter bothers me when the funds are applied directly do medical procedures like this.
jblock··on IKEA's New Catalogs: Less Pine, More Pixels
"They save money where they can by selling you disposable furniture."

Done. That's why most people go to Ikea. They aren't looking for bulletproof furniture. They're making stuff for people that want to have some furniture for a while and feel no guilt when they chuck it after a year or so.

jblock··on Wikipedia Redefined
This redesign assumes that Wikipedia needed simplification. I think that if the brand and experience needed simplification, people wouldn't use it or would be more vocal about changing it.

The designers clearly have some layout and visual acumen, but this redesign doesn't fully grasp the magnitude of Wikipedia. Every layout is modular, and every pixel has to be fully thought out. The result here looks more like the-new-Digg than it should.

jblock··on Microsoft's New Business Plan
Not to nitpick or defend MS, but it sounds like they don't want to call it 8 unless it has all of the hardware features specified by 8 (like NFC). From what I understand it will get all of the new software benefits/features of Windows 8, just not in name.
jblock··on Craigslist Suing Padmapper
I'd be interested to see interaction studies in the non-tech community about Craigslist, because I haven't seen a person in non-tech find difficulty in posting on Craigslist.

Also, don't confuse my opinions about Craigslist's design/UX with an opinion on the case. I've used Padmapper extensively. While I believe that Craigslist has a right to do what they please with their content, I don't see what Padmapper was doing as wholly legally wrong.

jblock··on Craigslist Suing Padmapper
"Craigslist is one of the poorest user experiences around and succeeds only because people insist on using it."

If a lot of people INSIST on using it, then that means it has good UX. Complaints with their UX should be qualified.

jblock··on Pixate - beautiful native mobile apps with CSS
Looks good and all, but I really don't think it's worth $200K. And $150K more for Android support? Where's all this money going to go?
jblock··on Sparrow acquired by Google
Conflicted. I'm happy for the guys who worked hard and clearly got what they wanted out of this deal, but as a loyal Sparrow user, I feel some sense of betrayal that they're simply going to abandon their products beyond security updates.
jblock··on Visual.ly launches social network for data visualizations
The aspects of Facebook that annoy you or I are the exact reasons why other people embrace it. It's become a part of people's lives--more than just a web application.

I think the tech community might gravitate towards these niche solutions, but it'll take a lot of time and poor decisions on Facebook's part to get several hundred million people to forsake it.

jblock··on Google’s Marissa Mayer Tapped as Yahoo’s Chief
haha, I actually meant the "what the fuck" part
jblock··on Google’s Marissa Mayer Tapped as Yahoo’s Chief
I mentioned this out loud at the office and that was the exact same reaction.
jblock··on Don’t Root for Aereo, the World’s Most Ridiculous Start-up
"To understand just how ridiculous this plan is, let’s point out, first, that recording and streaming television is not a difficult technical problem to solve."

Yeah, if you paid for cable. The whole point of Aereo is that you DON'T pay for a full cable service and you get an experience that is more in line with how you watch TV.

jblock··on How an iPad mini Could Define The Small Tablet Market
I don't want to make assumptions without seeing some data on this, but do people really think that the 10" iPad is too big? I can understand a fiscal reason to make smaller iPads, but I struggle to see any vast ergonomic benefits to a slightly smaller device.
jblock··on The Curse of Bullshit
I've noticed an odd phenomenon lately: when I'm in a crappy mood, and someone asks me how I'm doing and I lie and say "fine," it often takes me out of my own head and reminds me that I might be overestimating whatever is going wrong.
jblock··on Bye Bye Craigslist
Sometimes people seem to forget that the most frequent users of Craigslist, and the ones that keep it popular, are not complaining about it having bad UX. We are.

I want PadMapper to succeed (it helped me find a place super-quick for grad school in the fall), but Craigslist has every right to legislate their content. We'll see what they do/don't do about it.

jblock··on I don't "get" art
Anything without appropriate context is hard to "get."

Think of how often you have to explain something to someone when they react unfavorably. The problem with the pieces in this collection is that they are lazy. They don't come from a sense of expression; they use shock value to get their effect, and the result is often met with hostility.

I had a similar reaction when I saw a fluorescent light on the wall as a piece in the Met in NYC.

jblock··on Carnegie Mellon SCS grads are tops in salary, says nerdwallet
"...if you have practically nothing to lose."

My student loans say differently. :)

But honestly, so many factors go into post-undergrad job hunting these days that it's difficult to simplify the issue into "go to a startup" and "don't go to a startup."

I also wouldn't say that 100K is "slaving your life away" if you want to raise a family and live a comfortable life. I went to a small school in southwest Indiana (Rose-Hulman) and most graduates want nothing more than to work a 9-5 engineering job and find the love of their lives.

And frankly, I can't find the heart to advise them otherwise.

jblock··on Dancer.js, a high level audio api to make visualizations

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property '0' of null, dancer.js:319
All I see are floating particles. The code looks sleek, though, and I'd love to see it working. I had a hacked up WebGL visualizer for a computer graphics class long ago, but it was nowhere near as thoughtfully written.
jblock··on Take my money, HBO
HBO is a Time Warner subsidiary. Until that's not a thing, this just simply won't happen. I'd like it to, but the business realities just make it unfeasible.
jblock··on Show HN: We built Pipe in 48 hours using Singly, Node.js & Ember.js
Same here; I can't read it.
jblock··on Why free software has poor usability, and how to improve it
The author is oversimplifying a problem that should not be oversimplified. Usability is something that requires specific empirical evidence to examine, and no two pieces of software are alike. It's a metric that is perpetually evolving and incredibly complicated. It's not just good visual design, and it's not just a symptom of strict coding and architecture standards.

The author does not provide much evidence for these solutions combating usability problems, but if they did, I would be much more willing to listen to their advice. I would have also liked to see specific examples of usability faults (not just software with poor aesthetics, which is another subjective metric that the author oversimplifies) and instances where these applied techniques were able to solve them. I commend the author's desire to face-off against a problem which is out there and prevalent in the FOSS world, but their claims need to be backed up before I could take them to heart.

jblock··on [dead]
I guess a better question would be whether the interface is a factor in retaining customers at Lastpass. Clearly, their showpiece isn't the web interface--it's the ubiquity through all their browser extensions and apps so that you rarely need to go through said interface.

At the same time, I agree with other posters. It's low-density to the nth degree. I go to the lastpass web interface because I need to quickly sift through hundreds of websites to find a single password. I don't want to spend my time scrolling and waiting for animations. It looks pretty, in that it looks like 90% of websites shown on HN. That doesn't mean its all that suitable for the task at hand.
