jbj··on Stanford researchers confirm N95 masks can be sterilized in oven
If your oven is not accurate near 75 C. maybe you can use one of the other methods, from the pdf it looks like water steam could do the same job.
jbj··on Ask HN: Is RSS dead?
still use it for podcasts, butgetting increasingly more troublesome to track down for new podcasts
jbj··on Ask HN: Third party software to combine fitness tracking data
3+ years user of runalyze: Very happy with the integration of third party foot pods from runscribe.
jbj··on The coming IP war over facts derived from books
The author makes a side note about getting access to gmail. aren't there at least a handful of third party services that require access to content of gmail?
jbj··on Under Armour dumped an app
what an obvious solution! Thanks
jbj··on Under Armour dumped an app
Tech startups change a lot, when you use something one and off over a long period of time, I find it difficult to navigate within their ecosystems.

As for sports tracking, there are a few reasons I can see to use them: Social, Health, Visualization, & Data collection/management

Maybe a little off topic for some, but here is my experience with sports tracking after using a couple of different solutions during the past 10 years:

I like Endomondo, and joined fairly short after they launched the website.

They have had a pro version, a plus version, and now a premium version. Just when the app launched, I bought the paid version from the app store, which was a single payment and I liked to support a new, and in my case local, initiative.

One thing which was really nice with particularly this app, was the audio feedback, while running, so no need to look at a screen to get the lap time, pace, heart rate, etc.

I don't use the social features a lot, but it seems that Strava[0] now dominates in this space, I have tried their app, but I don't like their data vis, and find their privacy/sharing permissions to distracting to modify to suit my preference.

I have since moved to using a running watch from Garmin and don't really rely on the tracking capability of a smartphone.

Now I have copied my running activities to runalyze[1] a project which used to have all their code base on github in their earlier days. They do a fantastic job at visualizing data from both my watch and surprisingly also very well from 3rd party footpod powermeters[2], they do this much better than Garmin does on their own website[3] because they overlay right and left shoe on the same graph. They do on the other hand, not have 'social' features, but you can generate a public sharable URL.

Luckily, Garmin is a pretty big company, and the will hopefully not close their service any time soon, but it bothers me a little that on my newer watch, 920XT, I need data connection to extract my activities from my watch directly directly to their platform in order to view it.

On my old 910XT, it was possible to extract activities to my laptop, or even to my phone with a 3rd party app[4] and an ANT+ chip. There was even a nice app for viewing activities locally on the device [5] - a really nice solution if you don't have a data connection, and you are using an older watch with an android phone.

Over all, I have been very happy with Garmin, just with the tiny exceptions of need for online sync, and the decision to remove support for their temperature sensor data field.

-cheers

jbj··on Is Catalina a Good Upgrade Yet?
may I ask which distros you have tried? From investigating the arch wiki, there is a bit info on the graphics: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MacBookPro11,x#Graphics

I have too considered system76 as well as lenovo t480, so far the mac can still do the work I need.

jbj··on Is Catalina a Good Upgrade Yet?
Oh, thanks for the idea! I actually want to migrate to arch a little bit at the time since I am not completely fluent in all the processes, and I would like to understand what each setting does. At the same time I want to have something that is functional from day one. Maybe I am overestimating the time needed to get arch running, I am a ubuntu/debian user through 11 years.
jbj··on Is Catalina a Good Upgrade Yet?
the one I used to have before catalina was Office 2016, I am not sure if my license is compatible with 2019.

I just tried the packagefile from the link, and after installing I am still stuck with MS office 365.

At this point, libreoffice does the job, and I cant be bothered to invest more time to get MS office, 2016 edition 64 bit, or whatever would be applicable in my case, to work like before catalina.

thanks for the tips though.

jbj··on Is Catalina a Good Upgrade Yet?
I previously looked for this without luck, but it seems there is a manual upgrade here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/office/troubleshoot/office-... I will check it out.
jbj··on Is Catalina a Good Upgrade Yet?
I upgraded my MBP (late 2013 edition) 10 weeks ago. I have experienced more forced software (mac news and some siri stuff) Additionally the Microsoft office installation I had with a valid license is no longer functional, and was "upgraded" to MS office 365, which is a subscription based model that seems to run online rather than locally.

I refuse to pay for the upgrade, and just use Libre Office now.

Further more I am looking into best compatible linux system to run on the hardware.

So far I have read that the cinnamon based manjaro linux should be reasonable.

jbj··on Archlinux on the System76 Darter Pro
thanks! Very appreciated tip!
jbj··on Archlinux on the System76 Darter Pro
Great read! I am still using my T430 from 2012. Along some similar thoughts, I was looking at the T480 to run manjaro. After reading your post I am adding darter for consideration.
jbj··on Ask HN: Any Pebble Alternatives?
Just get a pebble.

I got a replacement pebble of ebay, works great with the "solanum" app (pomodoro) and GoogleTasks for pebble as a todo list that syncs to a google account.

I have the rebble subscription as a support for the maintanance team although I rarely use the voice to text capability.

I wear my pebble everyday. Just because the company doesnt exist doesnt mean the products are useless.

you may have to track down the apk file if you are on android and dont want to use gadgetbridge from F-droid

EDIT: I extracted my pebble apk with apk extractor [1]:

size 26589168 md5 3edeeffdca616336adc27eaf6189e85e sha1 b3b3642ceaf125049eb241fee2e28f573bf2a04f

correspondingly the one on apkmirror is slightly smaller [2]:

size 26589160 md5 eb057a463e688b0f51c2820227fb0520 sha1 41ad7557920e94ab05081e7bab07f0accd759e50

I am actually surprised that the version I have is 8 bytes larger.

jbj··on ISO week date
in Denmark it is quite normal to communicate by week numbers rather than dates. works well, some people are not used to it if they didn't grow up with it.
jbj··on Linux is now a viable OS for PC gamers, thanks to Steam's Proton initiative
Ubuntu Mate also has nVidia support
jbj··on How does Apple get away with this UI?
I got enough of that reminder and upgraded to catalina.

after this was done I could not ise microsoft office, to which I have a license key. An "update" to office 365 was promted, to which I also accepted .... turns out office 365 is a subscription based product.

as a user with some knowledge of open source alternatives I dont see why these two corporations are lowering the incentive for me to keep using their products, at one point it will just be easier to boot something like manjaro or ubuntu from the hardware and get rid of reminders and subscription offers.

I am actually open for HN users suggestions for an OS replacement for an MBP from late 2013

jbj··on Duolingo becomes first VC-funded $1B Pittsburgh tech startup
From my experience, there is a notable difference between using the app and the website.

on the website, I would have a little written blob of theory, which I found missing from the app.

other than that I had a much smoother user experience on the website, faster and fewer ads.

also typing on a keyboard is a personal preference over a thumb on a touch screen in my hand.

that said, I found it to be a reasonable basic intro to a few new languages.

jbj··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
coming from ubuntu before mbp(2013) I anyways found the escape key to inconsistent to appreciate. depending on your state of full screen and what program you are in it will give you different response (exit full screen vs in program functionality) hence tried to disincorporate usage of escapekey from my muscle memory alltogether.

I am surprised to see from the comments how many countries have their own app for some purpose
jbj··on Verified by Twilio
Not sure if I can agree totally, I get less spam calls on my danish phone number than on my US phone, however I do get missed calls every now and then followed by a call from a "Microsoft Tech Support" which are an awful similar in style to those reported on in the podcast "Reply All"[1] I suspect those are number spoofing as they rarely get the length of the local phone numbers correct.

In case of calls originating from another country will laws and regulation actually be able to do anything here?

jbj··on Former Fortnite UX lead digs into ethical game design
interesting. And they dont even mention that some online influencers are taking sponsorship money to randomly pop into a game and donate thousands of dollars to the winner. I am not sure where the motivation comes from, but it surely generates some uncertainty and reward for playing.

jbj··on Caster Semenya loses landmark legal case against IAAF over testosterone levels
A line for female athletes has been put in place at a testosteron level of 5 nmol/L. according to the article: "more than 99% of females have around 0.12-1.79 nmol/L of testosterone in their bodies" and: "male range of 7.7-29.4 nmol/L"

Other sports have limits for molecules like EPO, where the limit is also different between men and women: https://www.nature.com/news/2006/060224/full/news060220-18.h...

This is just different because it is about the male hormone, and now the IAAF conveniently has a metric to distinguish between men and women.

It is just case that has no easy answer. Athletic games has been held for ages, celebrating the best people in their disciplines, while at the same time discouraging people to cheat.

It turns out some people exist with natural advantages, and this advantage is just particularly controversial because it is related to gender.

For those interested there is a 50 min bbc documentary about Caster called "Too Fast to Be a Woman": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-UX0LE_tCg

jbj··on Minard / Morse / Tufte and Authenticity on the Web (2018)
I received physical promotion for Tufte twice in my personal letterbox (while in USA) too my high surprise. Of course it made me check him out online, but I think his presentation is not something for me.

Edited for clarity since I apperently got downvoted

jbj··on Sailfish OS Oulanka is now available
From the website: ''' Availability Sailfish X is currently available in the countries of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland ("Authorized Countries") and the use of our website and services to purchase Sailfish X outside of the Authorized Countries is prohibited.'''
jbj··on PureOS is convergent
if you like maemo, you should check out sailfish OS which is some kind of successor. I have the gemini PDA, which allows a few different OSs, others are android and debian. the company behind, planet computers is currently running their second indiegogo campain for a slightly altered device called the cosmo communicator. It adds backlit keys and other more "phone" features.
