Distru (https://www.distru.com) | Senior Software Engineer | Remote | Contract to Full-Time

We are a small engineering-focused team building logistics software for the cannabis industry. We've built the app from the ground up using Elixir & Phoenix and are excited about being apart of the Elixir ecosystem. On the front end, we use redux/react and are getting into some GraphQL.

Our software helps cannabis company's manage production of their cannabis products, deploy large scale sales team, invoice customers, fleet tracking, and more. We have over $300M in transactions per year passing through our platform and want to keep growing that number. We're looking for another engineer to join our passionate development team to take on critical feature development and help get us there!

jbhatab··on Why isn't the internet more fun and weird?
I don't know what internet this person is on, but the internet I'm on can get pretty fun and weird.
jbhatab··on Cafe opens in Tokyo staffed by robots controlled by paralyzed people
Most positive and inspired startup concept I've seen in a while. Serious props to the founders for pushing boundaries with this.
jbhatab··on Netflix Pulls the Plug on Feature Designed to Get Kids Addicted to Netflix
I understand where your coming from, but just imagine if you were brain damaged or one of your family was brain damaged. Merry Christmas :)
jbhatab··on Netflix Pulls the Plug on Feature Designed to Get Kids Addicted to Netflix
This is a pretty interesting response. I think their UI and interface is highly innovative and their contributions to JS are pretty amazing.
jbhatab··on Trying to ‘Save’ the Rural Economy
I feel a sense of inevitability with rural America fading in importance and massive hubs being the dominant players. The only solution I can think of is pushing for more remote labor in these rural areas as an acceptable lifestyle choice. Maybe restructuring the towns with more of an appeal for 30-45 year old software engineers to work out of. The biggest problem I see though is top tier education systems in these places being the biggest deterrent.
jbhatab··on Uber Revenue Slows as Quarterly Loss Surges to $1.1B
Nothing reminds me how out of loop the Hacker News and Silicone Valley is from the rest of the America like an Uber post. It always degrades into an anecdotal competition on who had the worst experience with Uber and how amazing Lyft has been. The fact that they are growing 38% in a quarter at their scale and we're calling that 'slow' is pretty nuts.

Personally I've had good and bad experiences with both, but almost everyone of my friends outside of tech uses Uber exclusively and love it. Can't wait to see how the race to a better self driving experience goes.

jbhatab··on A critique of Gmail's “smart replies”
This is ridiculous... I hate when robots auto fill in boring emails I have to send 100s of times a day!!!
jbhatab··on Phoenix 1.4.0 released
I can't wait for telemetry. Better monitoring will be a huge addition to the ecosystem!
jbhatab··on SoftBank’s debt obsession
I'd like to learn more about this and their motives. It'd be a little alarming if the US government was the top investor in the top vc firm buying up massive stakes of top SV companies. But maybe im unaware of how much investments America and other countries make like this.
jbhatab··on The First Rule of Microsoft Excel: Don’t Tell Anyone You’re Good at It
awesome!!!!! Can't wait to use this.
jbhatab··on Masayoshi Son, SoftBank, and the $100B Blitz on Sand Hill Road
"Son tells Bloomberg Businessweek that he plans to raise a new $100 billion fund every two or three years and will spend around $50 billion a year. For perspective, in 2016, the entire U.S. venture capital industry invested $75.3 billion, according to the National Venture Capital Association."

This is an absurd statistic. If that's actually true, startups have a long and potentially exhilarating road ahead of them.

I wonder what this would do to the startup landscape in the long term though. Will this make startups look more like big incumbents more than a sprawling landscape?

jbhatab··on EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019
I'm so confused why everyone is against DST. It is such a benefit to all of my friends who live on farms and do physical labor.
jbhatab··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
This one :)
jbhatab··on I’m leaving China
1. I wonder how much the longstanding Cultural Revolution has had an impact on their culture, it wasn't that long ago. While they were breaking down as a country, USA was united and placed on top from WW2.

2. Is there an "it's working" view of the government because they're experiencing explosive economic growth. There may be some resentment towards American corporations eating up the world and our government's active involvement in every country's affairs. I could see how the Chinese government pushing back against America enabling the rise of Alibaba, Didi, Baidu, etc making up for some undesirable policies.

3. I want to hear more perspective from the youth in the cities in China.

4. I thought this part was odd:

"The tragedy of modern American foreign policy is the history of active ignorance and refusal to actively confront the Chinese norm or legal violations. The Trump administration is utterly incapable of defending the values and assembling the coalition that would respond to American leadership as they face even greater threats from China."

Trump literally just started a trade war with China. Right or wrong, he is blatantly pushing back towards China economically because of their unfair practices. It might completely backfire and might not be praiseworthy 'values', but you can't say he's not actively confronting China.

jbhatab··on Nerves – Craft and deploy bulletproof embedded software in Elixir
There's a few reasons to use nerves,

1. It has a good system to hot load the code onto the pi and immediately start running your new code making deploys more efficient than other compiled languages.

2. Erlang uses processes which are very resilient and a good fit for projects that require constant streams of data & lots of connections which can be relevant in IOT. Basically the jobs restart themselves in a robust fashion.

3. Erlang runs on beam which is a well established VM that has years of development behind it making it a robust core for your project compared to some other operating systems that you may load onto your RPI. I don't think this is the biggest reason, but it is one.

The hot reloading & concurrency model are my favorites & elixir is just fun to build in as well. I'm already using it for web so to bring it into IOT makes it natural for a web/IOT mixed project.

jbhatab··on China's New Wave of Internet Censorship: Name Verification for Online Commenting
"Who will be replacing the States?"

I don't understand why there needs to be a replacement? I feel as though the United States isn't declining but information is spreading equalizing the equation globally. Sure there are political issues that cause back and forth, but I feel we are moving more towards a global culture with aligned goals faster than ever before.

jbhatab··on Trump Administration to Slash Green Cards by 50%, Affecting H1-B/EB
are you actually serious? the lower middle class support Trump because of his job focused agenda. the man says the word job more than anything.

to correlate everything a president does with support of his general fan base is ridiculous. that's like saying democrats support murdering people with drones because Obama used that often. This type of logic is very divisive and dangerous.

jbhatab··on How Discord Scaled Elixir to 5M Concurrent Users
The solutions they presented were all Elixir + Earlang. It just took some rewrites to get there.

In truly amazing open source fashion, they also made some libraries for other companies to leverage!!! Super big props to Discord for that one. Seriously can't thank their team enough for going above and beyond.

jbhatab··on Slack Announces New Slack Fund Companies
This is a really interesting model. Can't wait to see how it works out.
jbhatab··on Cooking Lessons
I just looked at their menu and their burgers are around $4-6. Mcdonalds has $1 burgers. I don't think that's really comparable. I can get a meal for 6 for the price of a meal for 2 at Locol.

On that note, Locol looks awesome and I'll be eating their since it's in my area :D.

jbhatab··on 4-Day Fast
why? It's true.
jbhatab··on Ask HN: Is there a “product launch as a service” company?
I'd say http://www.growthgeeks.com/ is my favorite source for this. They have lots of different people that can help you out.
jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
It was a major factor that they didn't want presidents appealing to only the most populous states. The fact that America was rural made that even more pressing back then because it was easier to spread information and there were more candidate than our two party system. It would have been easy with a populous vote to dominate a few key areas and biasing towards their issues and mindsets.

From your own article,

"Also, a successful candidate for the office of president would have to have the distinguished qualities to appeal to electors from many states, not just one or a few states:

Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole Union, or of so considerable a portion of it as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States"

This was quoted in your article from Hamilton saying that they didn't want a president that appealed to a single state.

My goal is to bring a sense of empathy to people that don't understand these issues due to lack of contact with people going through them. It's similar to a child who just needs to meet some black people who is less likely to become a racist.

When I mention Trump, it's because it's almost like there is a sense of disbelief of why he won. It encapsulates the lack of empathy and perspective people have for rural America. Having people understand why people voted for him may at least spark a dialog towards understanding their issues and coming up with solutions.

jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
Minorities in the cities face major issues and there are large movements aimed specifically at helping with them and to show their empathy. A major one was black lives matter. I think there needs to be more for different races such as Muslim and Latin descents.

But where is the support for a large piece of America. Rural America. It is a LARGE piece of America, even larger than black America. And unfortunately that gap in empathy was filled by Trump, which places us where we are now.

And please don't mix that statement up with me liking Trump. I understand how that could be read that way. I am just thinking about my friends in rural America that are facing very real problems and I care about them.

jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
I respect the honesty here. Basically we are moving towards cities and we need to move faster. Maybe that is the answer and we start a migration plan? Not sure.

But I'd at least like to see some people in the cities say 'we honestly don't care about rural people and they need to adapt'. That would sit better with me.

jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
Just like the people who support planned parenthood trying to protect themselves, rural america voted for a person who had their interests in mind even if there were consequences. They were looking out for themselves because people in the cities certainly weren't.
jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
What part of this has to do with the problem I brought up? Rural white America which is a large portion of America has a lack of opportunities.

I'm not talking health care. And I 100% know that it is not reasonable to bring those schools to rural America. But where is the dialog around helping them? At least a conversation around fixing the heroin problem and finding them jobs. If you have that conversation that was brought up during the election in big debates during the election, please link it.

there are countless examples of Trump at least putting together a plan, even if its stupid, to help them.

jbhatab··on Suicides in Rural America Increased More Than 40% in 16 Years
I don't think republicans have the best plan, but they were the only group that truly cared about their issues. Just like black people felt Trump didn't care about their issues. Rural America didn't think democrats cared about them.

PS. I am not a republican. I'm just basing this on what the parties chose to support in their campaigns.
