jbboehr··on Ditch your version manager
> To truly make the claim that nix allows reproducible builds, it needs to provide: - a way to specify versions that don't depend on the commit hash of a "nixpck channel" whatever that is

I don't see why a commit hash in insufficient to declare a package reproducible. For my system, I just use channels, but for anything mission critical, I think most people pin their commit hash of nixpkgs [0]. A pinned commit of nixpkgs will produce the exact same set of packages, forever.

> a way to actually properly pin package versions

The way you do this is to pull in a specific commit of nixpkgs (you can install packages from many versions of it at the same time, if you want). Alternatively, you can manually vendor the package file, which is what I usually do for one or two packages.

Except their goods are going to cost more too now. Unless you're going to start proposing price controls.

I can't really see UBI doing anything except inflating itself away.

Kind of amazing how little the interface has changed over the last 70(!) years.

I mean, at this point why not just take the GED or CHSPE and go straight to community college?

> And of course we have bit packing when we need to pack more efficiently than reasonable; bit-packing with *int_fast8_t* allows you to represent "I need this to take exactly 8 bits of memory, whatever it costs compute-wise, because I'm basically filling memory with these."

AFAICT, "int_fast8_t" is generally typedef to "int", and "int_least8_t" is generally typedef to "char", which conflicts with "I need this to take exactly 8 bits of memory, whatever it costs compute-wise, because I'm basically filling memory with these."

I assume you meant `int_least8_t`?

My SQL is a bit rusty, but, to reduce the queries even further, I think you can do:

You can say "the wrong side of history" because your ideas happen to be in alignment with the current zeitgeist, but there's no guarantee this will hold true.

In other words, it's a poor argument for anything and only interesting when used ironically.

Fair enough.

The suggestion was more for the HTTPS part and not the performance part of your complaint. It's simple enough to set up, pay-as-you-go, only requires one vendor, and should be very scalable.

I'd just as soon throw up nginx on a Linode, myself.

Even if they don't, the first thing I would do when buying a new computer is nuke the hard drive and do a fresh install.

For me nowadays, it's Linux (NixOS) with LUKS+LVM, but I would do it when I used Windows as well.

jbboehr··on Ask HN: If agelessness was genetically possible, wouldn't it have evolved?
I can't articulate it very well, but "The Red Queen" [0] offers a theory whereby sexual selection evolved as a defense against bacteria, viruses. It seems as though it may be disadvantageous to live too long as these mechanisms wouldn't be refreshed.

Try enabling hardware acceleration (layers.acceleration.force-enabled=true in about:config I think). I was having issues until I learned it was disabled by default on Linux.
