jaypeg25··on Time to Get Serious about Tick-Borne Diseases
Thanks for the info. These incidents have all been since the tick bite, but none have overlapped (other than the Barbers Chair syndrome and numbness in her legs...one of which kind of set on toward the end of the other). The MRI's saw some lesions, but they didn't seem to be enough for the doctor to be confident. He did consult with another Neurologist in his office who looked at the MRIs and was 100% confident in the diagnosis, but he wasn't willing to go that far.

Living in DC I guess we're fortunate to be so close to NIH because he is having her visit some MS specialist at NIH which will also include access to better/more reliable MRI equipment. It's been an ongoing process to even get enrolled in the study, but we finally have an appointment for next month so we'll see what happens.

My girlfriend was recently possibly diagnosed with MS. I say possibly because the doctor isn't confident - he put it at about 75% likely it's MS - but has no other answers to her symptoms which include numbness that started in her feet and eventually went up to her thighs that lasted for ~2 weeks, as well Barber's Chair Syndrome, and Retinal Vasculitis.

All 3 symptoms have since faded away, and the MRI's weren't conclusive enough to say it was MS, so the doctor is at a loss and working to get her set up with more tests.

What's interesting is she found a tick on her about a year ago, but the Lyme results came back negative. It may be MS but the doctor seems to have enough doubt that I've often wondered if it might be Lyme or something else.

This site just gave me a nostalgic flashback to the type of thing I'd stumble across (heh) via StumbleUpon.
jaypeg25··on LightSail 2 Spacecraft Successfully Demonstrates Flight by Light
Slightly unrelated, but I did a project this past semester in Grad School looking at the economics of a solar sail de-orbiting mechanism to attach to satellites. Seeing the successful demonstration here just gives me the slightest sense of pride and vindication toward the people in the class who said there's no practical use for something like that.

That being said, the project itself was a disaster and I'm glad to have escaped the class with a decent grade despite it.

You're being pedantic here. If you're counting calories and trying to stay within some sort of range you're probably going to be OK - especially if you're working out even a little bit.

If the calorie info makes you choose a salad over a plate of fried food covered in grease it is 100% doing its job.

jaypeg25··on Should you be concerned about LastPass uploading your passwords to its server?
Regarding your issue with LastPass, I use Dashlane and those issues used to plague me when I first started using it (~2 years ago). I recently noticed though that it's gotten way better.

Yeah well that's TechCrunch.
jaypeg25··on This is Your Brain Off Facebook - study offers glimpse of unplugging
Speaking personally, I just don't get enjoyment out of opening up Facebook. I'm either seeing posts from college friends I haven't talked to in nearly a decade, or posts from friends I talk to often and don't really need Facebook to connect us.

So what's the point? I don't like or comment on anything on Facebook. I don't post anything on Facebook. I just open it up to mindlessly scroll. I don't need that. I have other sites that I believe are better uses of time to mindlessly scroll (this site included).

jaypeg25··on What did Jesus really look like? (2015)
I know nothing about that but I guess it's entirely possible!
jaypeg25··on What did Jesus really look like? (2015)
I'm currently reading Zealot by Reza Aslan, which doesn't really debate whether or not there was a historical Jesus, but discusses the differences in fact vs the bible.

I highly recommend it.

jaypeg25··on Who Are My Investors?
The point of CFIUS used to be selective enforcement. But the new rules require mandatory disclosures of any foreign investment into a high-tech company.
jaypeg25··on Who Are My Investors?
We're at a point now where VCs are going to have to start refusing money from nearly everybody foreign thanks to the new CFIUS rules. They're so overly broad in identifying high-tech industries that I think there's going to be a lot of issues over the next couple years of implementation.

Much in the same way a disaster is often called an "off-nominal aviation event".
jaypeg25··on Astronauts escape malfunctioning Soyuz rocket
Might be a little hostile but none of it is inaccurate. American space experts have bemoaned the fact that we have had to rely on Russia to send people to Space since retiring the Shuttle, and have discussed its impact on national security, the economy, and just our plain old scientific knowledge.

I recently visited the FBI Museum/Tour at the FBI HQ in DC. There's a section where they talk about tech the FBI had in the 80s, including a camera they used for an undercover operation where they recorded some illegal shit going on in a hotel room.

You walk into a mock hotel room and even knowing the general vicinity of where the camera should be, struggle to find it. I flat out couldn't until a friend who works at the FBI told me - it was in the period on the artists signature of a piece of artwork in the room. A literal pinhole camera recording everything in the room more than 3 decades ago with pretty great quality.

I can't even fathom the technology they have today - there's no chance that'd be on the tour.
