jayjay71··on Launch HN: Mezli (YC W21) – Robotic restaurants that serve healthy fast food
Sounds fun. Best of luck.
jayjay71··on Goodbye YC
Thank you Aaron!
jayjay71··on Reiki can’t possibly work, so why does it?
Fun fact: at least in the United States, chiropractors do not have medical degrees and so they are not licensed doctors.
jayjay71··on Launch HN: Trexo Robotics (YC W19) – Robotic Legs for Kids with Cerebral Palsy
I just want to congratulate you on launching a product that I hope will have an incredibly positive impact for numerous families. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!
jayjay71··on Ironclad (YC S15) raises $23M led by Sequoia
Congrats to Jason and Cai! I don't know how much their product/service has changed, but I remember it making my life so much easier when I was raising money for my company.
jayjay71··on Tesla meets self-imposed deadline for Model 3, rolls out 5000 cars in a week
3% is not a rounding error. There are industries with smaller profit margins than that.
jayjay71··on Burger Robot Startup Opens First Restaurant
That's a pretty sweet machine. Can't wait to see it first hand.
jayjay71··on Peter Thiel: Silicon Valley’s monopoly on big growth tech companies is over
It's not a uniform distribution.
jayjay71··on Seattle has third largest homeless population in U.S.
>the companies (Amazon is directly complicit in this issue since they contributed immensely to the now largely unaffordable rental/housing market) that have profited from the area, need to ask the question if thousands of homeless people wandering the streets is an acceptable cost of doing business

I believe the shareholders have voted with a resounding yes. Companies are not out to make the world a better place - they are trying to maximize profits. I think we should try to find more pragmatic solutions such as improving government programs and creating non-profits to help with the homeless problem.

jayjay71··on GM announces completed production of 130 autonomous Chevy Bolt EVs
Why not apply for a job?
jayjay71··on AI and Robotics in Agriculture in Japan [video]
Many of them left. Some are still there working on things related to robotics, such as Verb Surgical. I'm sure a few became more traditional software engineers, although I don't know any personally.
jayjay71··on Robots that learn
You should google bistrobot
jayjay71··on How Craigslist Makes Money
I hope someone reads this and makes it a reality.
jayjay71··on Michael Seibel, CEO of YC, is doing an AMA
Just so applicants are aware, YC founders no longer have access to Pier 9.
jayjay71··on Michael Seibel, CEO of YC, is doing an AMA
Obviously you should listen to Michael over me, but as a former YC founder with a robotics startup I agree that you should probably wait until you're more focused on growth than prototyping.
jayjay71··on Trump administration re-evaluating self-driving car guidance
You clearly made the comparison between Uber's technology and the legally blind. Looking at your other comments, it seems you want to argue more than you want to have a constructive conversation. I'm exiting this thread.
jayjay71··on Trump administration re-evaluating self-driving car guidance
You're assuming that because it missed the traffic light once it will do so every time. The real world is a dynamic environment, something odd may have happened that it just missed the light that one instance. I am not condoning Uber and I suspect they have a long way to go with their self-driving technology, but you're making bold conclusions on almost no data.
jayjay71··on A self-driving Uber ran a red light last December, contrary to company claims
Delphi actively looks for traffic lights at every intersection with their self-driving technology, or at least they used to.
jayjay71··on Valve’s Gabe Newell: VR could “turn out to be a complete failure”
I can't believe I'd never thought of Google Earth in VR. That looks amazing.
jayjay71··on Valve’s Gabe Newell: VR could “turn out to be a complete failure”
What resolution is necessary to read standard text with VR? I'd imagine it would start to become usable for this at 4k per eye, and even then I suspect it would be limited.
jayjay71··on Payouts may have contribued to a talent exodus at Google's car project
I know plenty of people that refuse to work for defense contractors for large sums of money, and many others who refuse jobs in finance because they expect a miserable experience. Plenty of people consider things besides salary when taking a job.
jayjay71··on Payouts may have contribued to a talent exodus at Google's car project
How many companies will still be around in 50+ years?
jayjay71··on Ford is investing $1B into a self-driving car startup argo.ai
I think the automakers realize they need self-driving technology and are willing to pay a premium for the right team to jumpstart the program.
jayjay71··on F-35 Scores Impressive 15:1 Kill Ratio at Red Flag War Games
If there's that much political showmanship in the military, how effective is the US military against a real threat? I'm aware that no system is perfect and obviously the US military is highly tied to politics, but I didn't realize they would neuter themselves even from learning exercises.
jayjay71··on Tesla Model S P100DL Motor Trend all-time world record 60mph in 2.27s
This is admittedly an old article so hopefully the engineering has improved since then, but to the best of my knowledge it's still an issue. Maybe they made significant improvements to the battery pack in the P100 though.

edit: a quick Google of forums and articles suggests the car has a problem overheating when you drive it above ~100 MPH

jayjay71··on Sous Vide startup Anova gets acquired by Electrolux
Do you have a source for that?
jayjay71··on Uber Hires Veteran NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars
I'm biased because I used to work with many of the people Uber hired for self-driving cars, but they bought really great engineering talent. Great talent doesn't mean much though if the management is bad, and after their whole illegal testing in California debacle it makes me cautious.

That said, I didn't realize just how far ahead Google/Waymo is with regards to self-driving cars. If you check out the report of autonomous vehicles (HN "discussion" here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13554796) they are already operating on highways with zero problems! The data is limited, but that is promising.

jayjay71··on Uber Hires Veteran NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars
I also forgot they bought Otto. I think self-driving cars are a long way away, but I believe self-driving trucks could potentially be viable in a few years - and the market is massive. Maybe they can commercialize that soon enough to save themselves. Apart from the technology though, I'm sure the regulations (something Uber loves) and customer relations could be a tough nut to crack.
jayjay71··on Uber Hires Veteran NASA Engineer to Develop Flying Cars
When does Uber run out of money? I think the timeline on their R&D projects is longer than their runway, and I'm not sure how many more people would be willing to write Uber a 10 digit check.
jayjay71··on Gita – autonomous lightweight delivery system
People might just destroy the robot for fun though.

http://www.iflscience.com/technology/hitchhiking-robot-manag...

I haven't thought through the economics on these systems, but there are enough startups working on it for me to think it must be a larger market than I realize. I wonder what the overhead is (how many robots you need to meet demand), how quickly they can deliver, and what other limitations they have (temperature control, weather resistance, ability to traverse stairs/elevators).

At what point do these machines become cheaper than humans? I understand that they are likely meant to be a supplement as opposed to a replacement, but until they can compete with humans there's not much of a business.
