jaxn··on Just use a monorepo
Not when talking about integration / e2e tests.
jaxn··on Ask HN: How do you trust that your personal machine is not compromised?
I believe my most vulnerable environment is the development environment. 3rd party code being updated almost constantly combined with fairly standardized cli to cloud environments (kubectl, az/aws/Heroku, gh, etc.

And I don’t just have to be vigilant about what I do, but also about what my team has done. It terrifies me, and it’s a sad reality that my personal risk is reduced by the fact that if I fall victim, countless other teams will as well.

jaxn··on Just use a monorepo
In my experience is it not about how many projects we want to change at once as much as it is about how many we want to test/build at once.

Go Grizzlies!
jaxn··on Ask HN: What's Happening at Southwest?
Weekly travelers prefer legacy carriers because they get upgraded to fist class, have special phone numbers for customer service and rebooking, board first, etc.
jaxn··on How to Sell Your Startup
The intro talks about 9-figure deals, which seems a bit higher than an acquihire to me. 7-8 figures sure.
jaxn··on California passes law banning Tesla from calling software FSD
Is there any consumer car that is anywhere close? My understanding is that no other car has things like automatic lan change and route following. Let alone stopping at stop signs / red lights etc.
jaxn··on Faceting large result sets in PostgreSQL
And you have some control over when that scan happens, as well as the ability to index the MV
jaxn··on Act: Run your GitHub Actions locally
Once I even had to hard fork our entire monorepo to refactor the release actions that tag main.
jaxn··on Act: Run your GitHub Actions locally
What about caching to reduce ci time? GH setup scripts cache dependencies in a way that would seem hard to replicate in a make file.
jaxn··on Evernote to be acquired by Bending Spoons
I still have some citusdata socks that I wear. They also have an elephant on them.
jaxn··on Rage Against The Machine’s explosive debut album changed everything
It was always political. The lyrics didn’t change.
jaxn··on Laws barring noncompete clauses spreading
I am saying that they do NOT have non-competes.
jaxn··on Laws barring noncompete clauses spreading
Every admin assistant should be under an NDA / Confidentiality agreement. Same for personal security. But those are not non-competes.
jaxn··on Ask HN: What social media site could replace Twitter?
But it had a cute bird. And the fail whale.

It was approachable and silly. People didn’t take it seriously, but they weren’t intimidated by it.

Don’t underestimate the benefit of being underestimated.

jaxn··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Who has a better notification / messaging system at scale, that isn’t already a phone maker? I suspect the Tesla phone team would be thrilled to review that code.
jaxn··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Counter-point: Tesla is rumored to be working on a phone. That team could be very interested in Twitter for shareholder-value reasons.

Do we have any reason to believe it was Tesla’s AI engineers?

jaxn··on Tesla engineers were on-site to evaluate the Twitter staff’s code, workers said
Unless Tesla is interested in adding social networking / messaging features to the car interface.

It’s not hard to envision a potential business case

jaxn··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
I disagree. And I drive one everyday.
jaxn··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
It's not an impossible playbook to follow. Tesla and Square are doing a pretty good job of it.
jaxn··on Turbopack, the successor to Webpack
I read this while taking a break from trying to find the problem with our pnpm/turborepo monorepo. Works in a clean devcontainer, fails in CI, fails on multiple dev machines.

Currently. I’m skeptical.

jaxn··on Show HN: SigNoz – open-source alternative to DataDog, NewRelic
I am hesitant to run my APM on the same infra as our application. I love the idea of reducing an external dependency/cost, and it looks easy enough to add to our Kubernetes. It just seems a little like host our own status page on the same servers as our SaaS.

Is this something you have an answer for?

jaxn··on Node_modules: One character saved 50 GB of disk space
Can’t hard link across mount point, so either copy to the container or install inside the container (both negate pnpm’s benefit).

Our workaround is to put the global cache in the project so we can mount it alongside the code in the same mountpoint.

jaxn··on Node_modules: One character saved 50 GB of disk space
Which becomes a problem using containers in a monorepo.
jaxn··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
Hiring slows, wages go down, remote work becomes less normal, rates go up, prices cool to offset rates, boomers downsizing (pass passing property to heirs) increase supply as part of the largest generational wealth transfer ever…

People who stretched to buy at the peak of the market end up upside down, refinancing gets harder, selling takes longer, foreclosure starts… 2008 all over again.

May not be likely, but wouldn’t be surprising

jaxn··on Run SQL on CSV, Parquet, JSON, Arrow, Unix Pipes and Google Sheet
Reads are easy to cache at various layers (query cache, application, web, etc). Inserts and updates must go to the database.

So even a read-heavy application could have more writes than reads due to caching.

jaxn··on Run SQL on CSV, Parquet, JSON, Arrow, Unix Pipes and Google Sheet
Maybe in your database. Do you have any validation of that claim in a larger context?
jaxn··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
I emailed Tim O’Reilly in ~2001 and suggested they release PDF versions of their “Pocket Guide” reference books. I wanted to be able to have all of my pocket guides on my Sharp Zaurus (Linux handheld with keyboard, color screen, and Wi-Fi).

He went for it and offered me PDF copies of every Pocket Guide as a thank you.
