Wish the videos were working. It would be really cool to adjust the style as well
jawmes8··on Launch HN: Silurian (YC S24) – Simulate the Earth
Yes please improve surf forecasting!
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
This is great, I'm currently studying for Security+ and will be using this. Where are the practice questions from?

Thank you!

jawmes8··on Any programmers here also play instruments?
Trombone! I joined a couple of community bands and they are always something to look forward to
jawmes8··on Orange Meets: a demo application built using Cloudflare Calls
Seems cool! Was getting into WebRTC last year and this would have helped a lot. Is the pricing for this available yet?
jawmes8··on The Bulma CSS framework reaches 1.0
I usually look for duplicate issues that aren’t being addressed, or if there’s just a lot of seemingly non-trivial ones that go unanswered
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Best resources on starting a lifestyle business?
Big fan of your articles! I have a few bookmarked that I like to read every now and then
jawmes8··on Show HN: I made a guitar solo improvisation app
Looks cool, did you compose the backing tracks yourself?
jawmes8··on How can one initiate involvement in open source contribution?
That’s what made it easier for me. I would be that drive-by user in discord or searching for “Good First Issue” without even being remotely interested in the project. Now I try to focus on using it first. It was mostly an ego thing I had to move past
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Show Your Homelab and Home Server Setup for Inspiration
Ansible caught my interest! I setup a dev server and have been wondering about using Ansible to install my development dependencies on a new OS
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
That forum was a godsend and really supportive when I converted my prerunner to 4wd!
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What other good forums are out there?
Car forums don’t help either when most answers are “use the search function”. Which I understand, but some things have changed and/or people have learned better since the early 2000’s when those questions were originally asked :)
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Where do you find community outside of work?
I joined a community college concert band playing trombone. I’ve since started playing in other groups as a result of that
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What have you used a RaspberryPI/Arduino for?
College senior project - 3dof robotic arm on a vertical gantry system attached to a hydroponic garden. We used 2 arduino’s to control the lighting and gantry. Then one pi onboard the robot for imaging and another for a web user interface.
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Where can an HS student find work in tech?
In my area there are local business organizations (chamber of commerces, etc.) that help students connect with employers. Smaller shops appreciate a motivated young person hand-delivering a resume. I got my first job that way!
jawmes8··on How to write a cold email (2020)
I’d be hard pressed to open a cold emailed PDF. Out of curiosity does anyone have a good way to inspect them prior to downloading?
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Tech Forecasts for 2024 – Any Surprises on the Horizon?
Your first point is interesting. I’ve been meaning to explore some of these options lately (llama.cpp). I’m a bit too smooth brained to build a good business offering around that.

jawmes8··on My first $10k internet dollars
Great story and congrats! Thank you for posting, I hope I can get your help in the near future for a few projects!
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Best courses to learn React Native for a back end dev
I recently picked up react native, though I had a good amount of experience with React already and much of it is similar. Except for working with the file system and tooling.

One good boilerplate I’d recommend having a look at is https://github.com/infinitered/ignite not a course but possibly a good resource to learn from.

jawmes8··on Ask HN: What are the top BaaS (Back end as a Service) platforms in 2023

jawmes8··on Ask HN: Python’s Prospects in a Copiloted World
Anecdotally, using GPT-4 with Typescript has made its code output much cleaner.
jawmes8··on Ask HN: How would you build a budget CPU compute cluster in 2023?
Happen to have a write up on this? It sounds really cool. I’m in the process of retiring old machines for a client and I was thinking of doing that.
jawmes8··on Ask HN: ChatGPT best programming language to use?
I’ve been using it to learn SQL - it’s been helpful asking it to explain queries or joins that I want to perform.
