jawmes8··on Show HN: Hacking Bluetooth to brew coffee in GitHub actions
Intriguing work! I hadn’t realized they made grinder/brew combo machines…

Building a GUI or TUI would be a fun addition too!

jawmes8··on What VS Code theme do you use?
Second that, everything just pops
jawmes8··on Ask HN: How to get out of making CRUD apps?
That's inspiring. Did you have to put up a portfolio of personal projects before switching to that?

Other comments in this thread mention that dilemma as well. I'm in the same position trying to get Golang jobs, coming as a junior dev then running an IT service business.

jawmes8··on Ask HN: How do you find the weird parts of the web?
How did you find the timecube site?
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Is there a good guide to being secure online for non-technical people?
Phishing awareness is one thing.

When they check emails, they should always double check who is sending it. One common question I get asked - "Is this email legit?", where the email claims to be Microsoft, Google, etc. saying they _need_ to click this link to do X for their account.

jawmes8··on Ask HN: What productive things do you do on your phone in place of social media?
If I have a project I’m working on, mostly reading GitHub repo’s or documentation on the go
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Who needs help with side projects?
What's your contact?
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Where have all the forums gone?
Guess it depends on the niche you're looking for. Automotive forums are alive and well.
jawmes8··on I'm a ex-Google SWE that's coached 300 through the FAANG interview process. AMA
What's the hire/no-hire balance between soft-skills and leetcode performance in the interview rounds?
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Do you use the browser address bar to search?
Never thought twice about it until now
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What other forums do you visit?
> Also do discord groups count as forums?

For myself, I wouldn’t count it. I have a hard time searching for past information on discord. In my experience, forum posts do a good job of keeping the conversation at-hand focused.

jawmes8··on Ask HN: What other forums do you visit?
I feel the same. With forums, I feel it’s easier to get familiarized with other users. Not sure why, but it definitely feels more communal than Reddit
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What other forums do you visit?
My favorite is definitely Tacoma world, which is probably most active because the platform is still alive. The E46 forums are not quite as active but the folks that are have incredible knowledge
jawmes8··on Amazon builds property empire, quietly buying land across the US
> Hmm. I guess one man's dystopia is another man's utopia.

That does seem true for most sci-fi stories!

I would think the dystopian aspect is lack of entry for smaller businesses to reach those potential customers

jawmes8··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
Yep and the downloadable 3D files are especially helpful when designing with those parts in mind!
jawmes8··on Stealing the users back button with the History API (2013)
Never understood why sites do that. Do they expect me to stick around and click some ads? I usually just close the tab and move on
jawmes8··on Ask HN: What is a movie you keep watching again every couple of years?
Rocky
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Highschool dropout, have FAANG interview, don't know DS/algos
I've been grinding leetcode for an interview in about less than a month too. Similar to your situation (not familiar with trees, graphs, etc.). But have been getting the hang of the easy/medium problems thanks to resources on Youtube, etc. There's sites that show you common patterns and commonly asked questions:

https://neetcode.io (My go to)

https://www.techinterviewhandbook.org/grind75

https://seanprashad.com/leetcode-patterns/

If you want a study partner, I would be down. Best of luck

jawmes8··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
+1 for the STAR method, I find it helps with off-the-cuff answers too as it keeps me focused.
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Anyone been able to recover FB account without uploading ID?
I gave them my ID and they still wouldn't give me my hacked account back anyway
jawmes8··on Ask HN: Any “useful” side project ideas?
I recently took up Golang and had a great time building an IRC client. I was never around when IRC was bigger, but I enjoy hanging out on it now. Kinda reminded me of how HAM radio guys must feel about building their own rig.

This book helped a lot: https://quii.gitbook.io/learn-go-with-tests/

jawmes8··on Show HN: WebRTC Nuts and Bolts, A holistic way of understanding how WebRTC runs
Been learning Go recently too and WebRTC sounds like a great path. I realize this is a educational resource, but I wish all codebases were laid out like this! Each file and its purpose clearly laid out.
