javajones··on We Are Now One Year Away From Global Riots, Complex Systems Theorists Say
I would like to see the correlating data regarding the increase of ethanol in gasoline with the rise in food prices/riots as well. I seem to recall that just before the Haitian riots in 2008 there was an increase in ethanol mixture of gasoline.
javajones··on Why is GoToMeeting being a scumbag?
There are also folks who do what is known as affiliate marketing that may be behind this. GoToMeeting may not have actually placed the ad, however an affiliate marketer (3rd party) may have placed the ad in hopes to get click through dollars.
javajones··on What Guide Books Tell Foreign Visitors to the U.S.
Well according to TV viewing habits conservatives tip the scales for reality.

javajones··on What Guide Books Tell Foreign Visitors to the U.S.
According to who?
javajones··on Ask HN: How come ACTA isn't being taken as seriously as SOPA?
I just read this and thought I'd pass it along: http://www.infowars.com/obama-signs-global-internet-treaty-w...

Sensationalism of the site reporting this not with standing but why did SOPA get so much attention and this so little?

javajones··on Hackers hit US water plant
I believe they said that they had been turning the power on and off for a while, trying to short circuit it.
javajones··on Free Stanford Class with Steve Blank
I'm really excited by this and the other online classes. Has anyone else taken these? I'm wondering if I've over done it with the sign ups.
javajones··on Aerial footage of uncontacted Amazon tribe
These people will be contacted by the modern world one way or another. I choose to help them not treat them like animals to be set on display at a zoo. Let them be the decision makers in their own destiny. Like the guy said, loggers will come in and kill them. We can at least give them the ability to speak for themselves. And that unfortunately means someone is going to have to make contact with them.
javajones··on When we got to the scanner, I opted out. Then they opted out.
I have to say it sounds like you received the not so invasive pat down procedure of old not the new and improved stick your hands down my pants and twist pat down procedures.

A friend told me he flew into San Antonio yesterday and not only had his junk touched but it was twisted to boot. He said he didn't even get offered dinner first and he was afraid he'd get arrested if he'd punched the guy in the nose but was really just too freaked out to do anything.

This is what the government wants; sheeple that will let them even mess with your private parts without response.

javajones··on Actors Who Were Almost in Star Trek: The Next Generation
Just fyi... when I tried to open this at work our web traffic filter flagged this as an adult only website.
javajones··on Jason Calacanis' Warning To Y Combinator Startups [video]
Tell that to someone who's had an idea copyrighted/patented and used without their permission.
javajones··on Arrington is completely wrong about women in technology
You do realize that this is a Western societal phenom? I work with women who are from India and China. Quite a few of them in fact. What is different in their cultures that they have so many women in this field and we do not?
javajones··on Jason Calacanis' Warning To Y Combinator Startups [video]
Ideas can always be stolen. We've had so called investors try to rip us off left and right. Don't think Facebook isn't capable of the same.
javajones··on Hookbox: Real-time Web with WebSocket/Comet and Webhooks
This is very cool. I'd like to see it hooked into a web app though.
javajones··on Journalism Needs Government Help
If old technologies die out because of newer and better technologies then that's called progress. Why should the newspapers be immune to this? If they can't make a product that people want to purchase then they need to adapt or die.
javajones··on Old Spice on Twitter
OMG these are genius and an idea whose time has come. Marketing to a generation of people who have been marketed to tears, breath of fresh air.
javajones··on The Programming Women’s Dress Code
My office had the usual dress causal atmosphere until one day our new manager decided to make his mark by having dress up Wednesdays. So I decided to wear a formal complete with gloves(glad to know Ada did it too). I was the belle of the ball. I no longer work there but the guys have continued the tradition in my honor and dress in tales and top hats. :)
javajones··on Never Trust a Programmer
Boy isn't this the truth. My last job the project manager was great at getting everything in writing and a signed contract up front. It made life so much easier. When they came back with we want this too. He would just point at the contract and say, once we've completed this contract we can make a new one for the additional items you would like. Worked like a charm.
javajones··on Many gifted children fail academically
The other problem is that not all teachers are able to handle a class full of normal or even problem children AND meet the needs of a gifted student.

The teacher spends their time dealing with majority of the class leaving little challenge for the student who needs more.

javajones··on Zuck's Events (Facebook Privacy Hole Demo)
Is there another posting for this? I can't get to the article through the link.
javajones··on I'm quitting the Internet. Will I be liberated or left behind?
You know I gave up the TV because I can get anything online. The internet rocks.
javajones··on The Dense States of America (Map)
Ah, but not the same amount of water. That would be horrendous.
javajones··on Take Back Your Time by Ditching Bad Clients
"It’s often the case that the clients that pay your lowest rate are the biggest pain and the least loyal."

Boy ain't this the truth. I had a client last year that nickled and dimed me and every other vendor they have. It's their way of doing business. Then they stopped paying on time, claimed it was due to the economy. Thing is whenever they got a new sale they would ring a bell, once for every $1000 of the sale. We had several days each month where the bell did not ring less than 10 times. On top of this they expected me to perform duties that I was not contracted to perform i.e. man customer support phones, I'm a developer. I ended our relationship at the end of the year and haven't felt better about any decision. Good riddance.

javajones··on The world's only immortal animal
So is this animals natural predator diminishing in numbers, which is why they are spiking?
javajones··on The 4 Types of Emails Programmers Receive
I find I can get more of the last kind of emails when I'm working with one or two folks who appreciate knowing how to get their issues solved. i.e. I train the folks I work with on how to help me help them. It takes time and there are usually only a handful of people who will do this, the rest will continue to do what they always do. But every little bit helps. My biggest satisfaction comes when new employees learn from my favorite few without me having to teach them. :)
javajones··on Today is the Ides of March
Very informative, I had learned this long ago but had forgotten what "ides" really meant.
javajones··on Dreaded Favors Asked of Web Designers
"So this design is perfect but I'm the CEO so I have to make changes..."

OH my but truer words have never been spoken.

javajones··on The Internet is nominated for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
Is it for all of the internet or only the parts that aren't censored?
javajones··on How to Quit Your Job
Good point. What if a "job hopper" is someone who is looking for a good fit and won't settle for less? I don't see that as a negative.
javajones··on World's first commercially available Jetpack goes on sale
