Sounds like a 90s early morning TV show.

I'm gonna pay attention to this once it ships.

jasonvorhe··on I switched to Brave
> The elephant in the room

It's been 12 years and people are still making a fuss about a dude spending 8k(!) on politics some disagree with.

Incredible. I wish we'd hold other people in higher positions to such a standard.

jasonvorhe··on Claude discovers a novel enzyme system with CRISPR-like repeats
Already made. Early 40s.
jasonvorhe··on When did Google get so weird?
I'd say around 2016. Sundar just became CEO, the new CFO started gutting projects and teams. Ads in search results were no longer easy to identify by being highlighted. Free fall since then. Total betrayal. Won't ever go back.

I bet. Considering how "medicine" and "science" are currently run, I'd rather die than use it.
jasonvorhe··on Tells of a Slop UI
The site is utter shit. Total amateur hour. Terrible contrast, barely anything guiding the eyes, the padding to the sides is inconsistent. So is the entire design language from leading with some numbering that never goes beyond 01, round buttons, round input elements, interrupted by somewhat decorated layered elements which then leads to some kind of terminal window that doesn't resemble any terminal UI I've ever seen or used. It's all filled by various sloppy mentions of keywords that barely form some coherent narrative.

This page looks like some junior cobbled it together based on a hastily written ticket by some overworked product guy.

Yuck.

I'm at a loss that this seems to be considered a good thing post 2020.
jasonvorhe··on Comma's hands-off driving tech under investigation after 2 fatal crashes
Why would you rely on reporting pf behavior from a decade ago though? He was what... 25-26 then? He's closing in on his 40s (sorry if you read this geohot) and hasn't seemed very arrogant on his live streams for tinygrad. Strong opinions, confidence, sure, but he keeps a flexible mind.
jasonvorhe··on My German Exit Tax: 13 Tax Advisors, 1.5 Years, 18.7k€ to leave the country
Have you looked at German politics lately? These aren't serious people.
jasonvorhe··on It's 90 Degrees in the Arctic
Put on certain sun glasses and this reads just "be afraid".
jasonvorhe··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
Huawei has been shipping decent MBA-like laptops for some years now. The latest Panther Lake laptops seem to have made some leaps towards Apple on the hardware side as well. I still won't expect any Windows laptop in these form factors to outlive most MacBooks though.
jasonvorhe··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
Try Omarchy, you might enjoy it and to my knowledge everything should work out of the box.
jasonvorhe··on What happened to the Snowden archive
I'm not surprised that this billionaire was actually surprised by this.
jasonvorhe··on What happened to the Snowden archive
I think it's quite obvious that journalism is mostly PR for the current things in politics by now. It probably died around 2020 at the latest.
jasonvorhe··on AI and the Destruction of the Creative Commons
Eh? Where exactly is that a reality though? I just spent like 20$ last week on various Chinese frontier models using openrouter and ppq building like 10 different projects that would've cost way more than double or quadruple per token at the big 3 if I didn't have those alternative options. Hell, for small tasks I even fell back to a local 27b Qwen model.
jasonvorhe··on CCC invites all model citizens to 40C3
I know people who are vacationing who have more stressful schedules.
jasonvorhe··on Ask HN: Lesser known features of macOS/iPadOS/iOS/etc. 27
I think you need to prioritize the Ethernet device in network settings but I'm not at my Mac now to check.
jasonvorhe··on Show HN: Check if your IP has appeared in a residential proxy network
This would probably false positive every CGNAT IP, or am I misunderstanding something?
jasonvorhe··on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27
macOS 27 ade my M2 MBA feel like new. Tahoe just felt a lot less responsive most of the time.
jasonvorhe··on Don't be the out of touch Kung Fu master
I think this has long been the norm without AI. Just look at a lot of politians cheating with their university tests, outsourcing the work that lands them their titles to low earning ghost writers. Why do you think so many incompetent people rise to powerful managerial positions to make terrible decisions without consequences. It's probably going on for much longer than we all think because it's not always easy to find hard evidence and we're all trained to treat circumstantial evidence. How many scandals were there of influential people buying their kids into elite colleges? AI is just accelerating what's been ongoing already.
jasonvorhe··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Agreed. But your now flagged and no longer viewable post seemed to chime into the whole "GrapheneOS is using AI, they must be shipping slop" trend in certain circles.
jasonvorhe··on Mullenweg has returned as CEO after attempted board ouster
Who do you think pays for the political election campaign theater of all theses "democratic candidates" though?

I often have to think of Bane putting his hand on the shoulder of that Ben Mendelsohn character in The Dark Knight Rises while asking if he feels in charge. Reminds me of living in a western democracy.

jasonvorhe··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Conflicts with the common definitions of alpha versions I'm familiar with but definitions differ, of course.

Glad you're not among the gOS haters though!

jasonvorhe··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
You're using software from an alpha channel.

People sometimes.

jasonvorhe··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Set an alarm for the typical Motorola flagship schedule then.
jasonvorhe··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
Everytime I see Fairphone mentioned whenever there's news about GrapheneOS I'm confused as to why people keep on conflating both when they obviously have very different goals.
jasonvorhe··on What algorithm did Windows XP use to choose your initial user picture?
A couple of screenshots would've been useful for the post-millennial generations that never got to see the "beauty" (cough) of XP.
jasonvorhe··on Statichost.eu – European static site hosting
I was (4 years) and we made sure our rules were easy to grasp and follow to ensure we wouldn't have to deal with lack of clarity and enforcement.
jasonvorhe··on We have a year to fix security everywhere
> And a big fuck you to DeAlignAI, Z.ai, and everyone else who's been participating in this race to the bottom.

I'm so glad frontier level AI isn't in the hands of just the Altmans and that other cult leader who are currently live testing their products in actual conflicts in the middle east and Ukraine.

jasonvorhe··on Leaving VMware just got harder after Broadcom pulled VDDK downloads
I have very little pity for any of these customers, excluding maybe small businesses that simply don't know any better and lack the expertise but at every company and client I've been at there were at least 1-2 people trying to convince higher ups to not needlessly build core infrastructure on proprietary components and yet most were and are still being ignored.

Sure, if you have legacy Windows-only software that is proven to not work in other environments, you're out of luck and your hands may be tied but all the VMWare shops I've liberated from this slow, ugly and terrible to automate mess had to pay dearly for that.

How many more rug pulls do these people need? Oh right, they're probably in the middle of some Azure migration anyways.

Some people just need to learn through pain.
