jasonlfunk··on Apparently transparent – CSS3D HTML5 Experiment
This is cool. I'm freaked out that the statue is in the reflections but not in the room....
jasonlfunk··on Ask HN: Someone raised money by claiming my project as their own
I think the main problem that you'll have is proving damages. Sure, maybe they did something morally wrong or even illegal but there is no point to suing if they didn't cause any damage to you.
jasonlfunk··on Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking Is Prohibited
Ah, so it's not new regulation - but clarification on existing?
jasonlfunk··on Warning: Wi-Fi Blocking Is Prohibited
What's the fundamental difference between a hotel blocking people's hotspots and a movie theatre banning outside food and drink? They are both done to make their product offering exclusive while a consumer is on their premises.

If the principle for this regulation is "consumer protection", then I don't see why the FDA shouldn't ban movie theatres prohibitions as well.

If the principle for this regulation is "don't screw with the public airwaves", then I don't see why we need an additional regulation to specifically target hotels and convention centers, the existing regulation should be sufficient.

jasonlfunk··on Google Directly Embedding Stack Overflow Responses in SERPs
> So it appears this is happening with Stack Overflow knowing about it and approving it, after all -- they implemented schema.org. But at the cost of pageviews?

Having a useful answer appear at the top of a Google search with an obviously link to your site can only help you. It builds your brand as an authority and provides the first link for people to click for problems. I think this is a clear win for StackOverflow.

jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Run SSH and HTTP(S) on the same port
This is neat. What practical applications does it have?
jasonlfunk··on United Airlines sues site that found loophole for cheap tickets
I'm not sure what their case would be. How can making a suggestion to buy a different product be fraudulent?
jasonlfunk··on Artificial Intelligence, Really, Is Pseudo-Intelligence
I'm happy to see an article like this on HN. It is much closer to my thoughts on AI then the general optimistic inevitability of AI one usually sees in the tech community.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Morning Reader – A simple way to read the news
I'm curious why you chose the categories that you did. Why focus on business/tech instead of having a broader focus on more mainstream current event news?
jasonlfunk··on Sometimes, it’s just time to go home
I wish I had the permissions to downvote your comment.
jasonlfunk··on How Ghost increased conversions
I was referring to the title of the HN post, which has subsequently been updated. :)
jasonlfunk··on How Ghost increased conversions
The segment did exist - users who added a custom theme. Of that segment, they converted 10X more than those who didn't add a custom theme. Ghost then responded by making it easier to add a custom theme, but we aren't told what effect that had on overall conversion.
jasonlfunk··on How Ghost increased conversions
The title is wrong. Ghost didn't increase their conversion rate by 1000%. They found a segment of their user base that converted 1000% more than another segment.

It is not included in this post whether the overall conversion rate actually improved substantially after the changes were made.

jasonlfunk··on Big, bad Amazon
> What matters is if Amazon clients actually do go around Amazon or not.

I disagree. If every freely chooses to buy from Amazon when they could have bought elsewhere, that doesn't mean they have a monopoly. It means they offer a superior product (or a superior price). As soon as someone comes along and offers a better price or product, people will stop buying from Amazon.

Power still lies with the consumer in this case; government regulation is not required.

jasonlfunk··on Twitter Fabric
I'm sure this is probably helpful.... but there is too much marketing fluff on this page for me to really understand what it is.
jasonlfunk··on Nixie – Wearable camera that can fly [video]
Looks pretty cool. Of course, it's all in the execution. If the thing takes bad video and doesn't consistently record the action that you want it to - it doesn't matter how cool it is.
jasonlfunk··on Hyperlocal Mesh Networks
From the article:

"Most mesh networks are connected to the public Internet, but if that connection goes down, the local mesh continues to work. In Red Hook that means that you could make voice calls (over IP) from your housing project to the local hardware store to see if its open. Or you could email a friend who lives in the neighborhood."

I don't know VOIP very well so this may certainly be possible, but I very much doubt that without an external internet connection you'd be able to email anyone.

jasonlfunk··on Tips to Become a Better JavaScript Developer
I dislike when people say that good developers don't use libraries like jQuery. The main reason I use them is because I'm lazy. I'd much rather write $("#id") than document.getElementById("id"). I rarely write any javascript code that is so resource constrained that the extra time added by jQuery is not acceptable.
jasonlfunk··on Roda – A new Ruby web framework
I think this looks great. However, even in his simple example comparing Roda and Sinatra the code ends with 7 'end's. I can imagine how deeply nested a non-simple app can be. In my experience, the deeper you get in your nesting - the more complicated the code is to read.
jasonlfunk··on A Conference Stole My Identity
There are plenty of parody accounts out there. Impersonating someone is different.
jasonlfunk··on Show HN: Pagekit – A new, modern CMS built with Symfony components
I've been looking forward to someone publishing a new CMS. WordPress is great, but I've been wanting something new and fresh. I got the alpha installed and it looks good but there is still work to do, but I like what I see. Keep it up!
jasonlfunk··on Ask HN Mods: Why Do You Completely Change What Users Submit?
Maybe there should be some indication on the post that the article/title was changed so the edits aren't attributed to the original submitter. This would at least resolve that confusion.

It seems like the current model tries to be like SlashDot (where everything curated) but retains the appearance of user-driven content by keeping it's curation hidden.

jasonlfunk··on Kindle Unlimited
It's often the case that the books I want to read are not at my local library; either because they don't have them or they are already checked out. This is especially true of e-books. Wilbur[1] doesn't have the greatest selection.

jasonlfunk··on Busy NYC Restaurant Solves Major Mystery by Reviewing Old Surveillance
Am I the only one questioning the legitimacy of this post? Why was it posted on Craigslist? That seems weird to me.

Also, some of the statistic seems unbelievable. 60% of customers asked the waiter to take a group photo? 17% of people bumped into someone while texting?

I need more evidence that this isn't fake.

jasonlfunk··on CSS is unnecessary given a layout language
This is what he is saying is better than CSS? I don't think so.

How about a mobile friendly version of HN? :)

jasonlfunk··on Why The Student Loan Market Is Insane
You are right. This is exactly how a free market works. A bad school starts losing money and either changes or closes. If the Government insured or backed all the loans, bad schools have no market incentive to change.
jasonlfunk··on jSpy: Automatically detect user's history
Unless I'm missing something, it doesn't collect your history but rather can test whether you have visited a URL before. While still a problem, it's certainly a different thing.
