jasonladuke0311··on D-Link says it won't patch 60k older modems
I don’t think there’s much overlap between “people who run OpenWRT” and “people who use EOL D-Link routers”
jasonladuke0311··on D-Link says it won't patch 60k older modems
That’s insane.
jasonladuke0311··on CrowdStrike Update: Windows Bluescreen and Boot Loops
At ring 0 I assume. Not that it would matter, I imagine privesc would be fairly trivial.
jasonladuke0311··on The reckless policies that helped fill our streets with large cars
Yep it’s very much a prisoner’s dilemma. If I choose a smaller car then my family is in greater danger.
jasonladuke0311··on Hackers found a way to open any of 3M hotel keycard locks
That reminds me of the old “bump key” vuln in physical locks with tumblers
jasonladuke0311··on Insecure vehicles should be banned, not security tools like the Flipper Zero
Haha similar story. I used to deliver pizzas and worked with a pretty rough crowd. Once I locked my car while it was running and had a bunch of deliveries. One of the cooks unlocked it in about five seconds.
jasonladuke0311··on OpenAI drops ban on military tools to partner with The Pentagon
There are a lot of companies that probably don’t have “official” partnerships with the govt but absolutely help them, like every social media company, OS maker, telecom, auto maker, and ISP.
jasonladuke0311··on Luxury beliefs are status symbols (2022)
Who is “they?” Are you suggesting that all laborers are homophobic?
jasonladuke0311··on Xbox will block third-party controllers to "preserve the console experience"
> Auto-fire is trivial to detect

How is this done? Input rate variability or something?

jasonladuke0311··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
Selecting for intelligence/education/creativity is objectifying? Boy that’s a new one.
jasonladuke0311··on 'It's quite soul-destroying': how we fell out of love with dating apps
> Human communication is full of nonverbal cues which do not translate at all over text. In absence of those nonverbal cues which our brains are (usually) wired to pick up on, we end up mining the text for semiotic constructs which conform to our ideals of the other person, rather than the reality of the other person.

Fantastic explanation.

jasonladuke0311··on Excel will allow certain auto data conversions to be turned off
Quite an asymmetry there
jasonladuke0311··on About half of Bandcamp employees have been laid off
Exactly what I do as well
jasonladuke0311··on Geographic ‘hot spots’ for cigarette and firearm deaths in the U.S.
Read: they aren’t willing to spend the political capital. Which shows how much they truly value the issue. Much easier to bolster the status quo. Bonus: when that issue is under attack, you can rally the troops by saying “see? They’re coming after us!”
jasonladuke0311··on Geographic ‘hot spots’ for cigarette and firearm deaths in the U.S.
Which politically viable law would mitigate this problem?
jasonladuke0311··on Kids, take your college more seriously
Yep. Unfortunately it’s cost-prohibitive for most people.
jasonladuke0311··on Driverless cars may already be safer than human drivers
Because driving here sucks
jasonladuke0311··on Overthewire.org
I bet quite a few IoT devices would fall to these irrelevant attacks
jasonladuke0311··on Growing scientific interest in vagus nerve stimulation
Vagus nerve trauma is how liver shot KO's happen in striking arts. I always wondered how this worked. https://middleeasy.com/guides/dissecting-the-liver-shot/
jasonladuke0311··on A Gen Z Google software engineer
Lmao. This guy’s gonna get got. Why do people feel the compulsion to tell stories like this? If it’s true, he’s revealed enough info to make ID’ing him fairly trivial.

> And if they decide to punish him by letting him go, Devon says he’s still resting easy because they’ll give him a generous severance package.

Not if you’re fired for cause, homie.

jasonladuke0311··on Mister Rogers had a point – routinely greeting six neighbors maximizes wellbeing

jasonladuke0311··on I would rather see my books get pirated than this
Yep, Patagonia is suing Nordstrom for selling fakes: https://www.seattletimes.com/business/retail/patagonia-accus...
jasonladuke0311··on The $1M shot that changed sports contests
Funny you mention that; my son and I trained together and we would drill at home. Common stuff that noobs need, like side control escapes etc. it was amazing how much more sense it made live after “teaching” him at home.
jasonladuke0311··on The $1M shot that changed sports contests
> "Tutoring?" Calhoun said. "I'm struggling to learn everything myself. How can I teach others?"

I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but teaching something to another (at a level I understand) has really helped me grasp some things better.

The military uses an approach like this called "see one, do one, teach one"

jasonladuke0311··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
I kind of laughed because there was one right behind my childhood home in Vegas
jasonladuke0311··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
I ate there a couple of years ago and was astonished at how expensive it was for pasta.
jasonladuke0311··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
As someone obsessed with Hawaiian food (lived in Vegas most of my life), I just wanted to hit all the local places when I visited. We did eat at Roy’s steakhouse though.
jasonladuke0311··on How the Cheesecake Factory defied the restaurant industry’s rules of success
Some chains like Lazy Dog have a parallel business doing takeout meals: https://www.lazydogrestaurants.com/blog/tv-dinners
jasonladuke0311··on 19 Scientists Who Have Saved the Most Lives
Haber is an interesting one.
jasonladuke0311··on Threads, a Slack alternative unrelated to Instagram, has seen downloads surge
The DAU drop off is going to be (already is?) monstrous. Not sure if that’s a metric that matters because I don’t care, but people have already stopped using Threads in large numbers.
