> The subreddits for my local city are slowly turning into a weird BLM/Nextdoor hybrid though. Any mention of cops results in an endless parade of ACAB/bootlicker comments and most of the rest of the content is nitpicky complaints.

I would ask if we live in the same city, but I think this is every city subreddit now.

> You can only post on certain threads if you have the right skin color (r/BlackPeopleTwitter)

The joke goes that BPT is all white people, and TwoXChromosomes isn’t actually moderated by anyone XX

jasonladuke0311··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
> But other FAANGS are not hiring.

They are if you’re talented enough.

jasonladuke0311··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
I had an exec at my last job that came in like that. He was so transparent and likable that I immediately became suspicious. He had tons of stories so I assumed he was a bullshitter, but nope, it seems he had just been there and done that. I basically owe my career to that dude, he took a chance on me (I was about as low on the org chart as it gets) and it was the break I needed to show what I could do.

Sometimes there are actually great leaders in the sea of self-serving assholes that populate the business world.

jasonladuke0311··on Smartphones and social media are destroying children’s mental health
That's false equivalence. Smartphones are much closer to an innate/biological shift than a cultural one.
jasonladuke0311··on I quit infosec and I couldn't be happier
Profit/cost center is kind of a false dichotomy in some places. At the least, it lacks nuance. If you sell software or services that require privileged access, security tends to be valued more highly than a checkbox.
jasonladuke0311··on US Defense Department Lets AI Pilot Take Stick of F16 Jet Fighter for 17 Hours
Let’s pre-empt that, even: assassinations of non-allied AI researchers?
jasonladuke0311··on Lab leak most likely origin of Covid-19 pandemic, U.S. agency now says
They improved the ability to share info (fusion centers and whatnot), but the desire to do so remains under the auspices of humans.

> avoid insinuating that the target is effeminate when they "should not" be, i.e. you avoid homophobia.

You’re implying that homosexuals are effeminate?

jasonladuke0311··on Bing: “I will not harm you unless you harm me first”
> The one where the two women in love live happily simulated ever after was really sweet.

I love it too, one of my favorite episodes of TV ever made. That being said, the ending wasn't all rosy. The bank of stored minds was pretty unsettling. The closest to a "good" ending I can recall was "Hang the DJ", the dating episode.

jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: How do you find stuff on the internet now?
Even then it’s getting worse. Google is indexing “top posts” sidebars as well as the subreddit postured for a given timeframe. It’s polluting results worse by the day.
jasonladuke0311··on Kevin Mitnick Hacked California Law in 1983
That is the greatest class name ever.

Yeah this place has become less interesting over the years. 95% of comments are nitpicks, sophistry, or just inflammatory.

Have they?

jasonladuke0311··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
I'll do you one better: all of the subjects were untrained. Any kind of training will improve fitness in virtually every single marker that can be measured. Your aerobic fitness will improve from lifting heavy weights. You'll get stronger from running. These studies are totally useless.
jasonladuke0311··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
> running miles and miles at low intensity will damage my middle-aged knees more than HIT

Maybe, maybe not. But running isn't the only method of cardiovascular exercise.

jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
> I picked up Jiu Jitsu a few years ago and found that to be extremely effective when it comes to meeting people wherever I go. It's usually a stead group of people with other people rotating in, and doing collaborative activities together makes for quick friends.

And it's one of the nicest, most positive communities I've found.

jasonladuke0311··on I don't read web articles anymore, but I read books
> I actually read a lot LESS books than I used to.

Fewer.

- Stannis Baratheon

(I’m not actually a grammar nazi, I just can’t resist the joke.)

jasonladuke0311··on I don't read web articles anymore, but I read books
Same here. I don’t have the patience any longer.
jasonladuke0311··on Guitar Effects Guidebook, Vol. 20 [pdf]
Wow thank you for this, as a noob I was combing through the Boss Katana manual last night trying to understand what the hell everything does.
jasonladuke0311··on Taxpayers paying billions for the renovations and construction of NFL stadiums
I’m certain the NFL and other owners would sacrifice children to change GB ownership structure if they could.
jasonladuke0311··on Cormac McCarthy loves a good diner
No movie can do a book justice, movies inherently lack fidelity. There just isn’t the same information density, at least not in a way that makes an interesting movie. I find it interesting that even this movie gets the same criticism; the Coen brothers described the screenwriting process as “one of us holding the book flat so the other can read and type at the same time”.
jasonladuke0311··on Productivity Blocker
They can be, but not always. For example, any subject even tangentially related to Twitter or Musk summons a spate of low-brow, boilerplate comments.
jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: How to do that you need to do but not motivated at all?
Yes. If parent wants more in-depth musing, I highly recommend The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg [0]. It details how and why habits are formed and how to create your own. Genuinely a life-changing book for some people.

jasonladuke0311··on Twitter Office Supply Auction
The same reason people join HOA boards (hint: it has nothing to do with keeping property values up)
jasonladuke0311··on Ask HN: How is the job search coming along for people who got laid off?
> People that doubt these things are usually projecting some kind of insecurity. "It's impossible!"... no actually, not only is it possible but it happens all the time and yes it happens with FAANG workers too.

And a lot of this comes from people who are far less wordly than they think they are. Like there are people that genuinely believe that no one in security makes more than $200k except CISOs.

jasonladuke0311··on Accelerando (2005)
Qntm (Sam Hughes) has a number of works like this. Ra, Fine Structure, and There is no Antimemetics Division are fun reads that get really messy at times.
