jarrenae··on Tell HN: I interviewed my dad before he died
I'm really sorry to hear about your loss.

My family recorded an hour long interview with my grandmother recently, and when she passed away it was something that we were really thankful to have it.

One of my coworkers had a similar inspiration for https://www.dominomind.com/ (it's still an early WIP) but the whole goal is to capture lasting memories to make them searchable later.

I feel like it's important for digital memories to be increasingly more searchable as time goes on. I capture so many random pictures, I worry sometimes if the important ones will be lost in the sea of food pics.

jarrenae··on Ask HN: Do you think Hacker News is missing any features?
As in posts, comments, or both? Would they be added by the poster or by other users later?
jarrenae··on Ask HN: Do you think Hacker News is missing any features?
I'm working on some mods here and there for the exact same reason. YC doesn't appear to have any interest in adding QOL updates to HN (which is good in some ways I think).

A couple web extensions could really improve the platform for heavy/regular users.

jarrenae··on Ask HN: Do you think Hacker News is missing any features?
I haven't seen this one before, but wow that's a solid list of features. I'll definitely be trying it out.
jarrenae··on Show HN: Hacker News Mods - A collection of tools/mods for HN
Of course!
jarrenae··on Show HN: Hacker News Mods - A collection of tools/mods for HN
It's live now! Really looking forward to seeing the list grow.

Also, cool product. I'll have to try it out!

Doesn't have to be open source no, feel free to submit and we'll add it!
jarrenae··on Ask HN: What'd you do while HN was down?
I've been on a sailing kick recently, and think you'd like this vlog featuring Sven and one of his boats: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bca5_uyH9E4

The sheer utility of every component of the craft is awesome.

jarrenae··on Show HN: I made a GPT-3 thing to help me make better hackathon projects
Sorry, we reached our cost limit for messages. It seems like someone used a bot or something to message it for a long time. It spent $120 before it shut down.

It'll refresh each month, and I'll probably add a better explanation so it's more clear what happened.

jarrenae··on Show HN: Hacker Blues
I made Hacker Blues to simply change the color theme of HN for those times when I’m feeling blue. While I love the orange, I really love blue. I know users can customize the nav color on their profiles but I thought it’d be great to see the entire theme swapped.

I’m also thinking of creating more Hacker News mods for the community that are fun/useful (ideally both). I know people have made a bunch already, but let me know if you have any requests!

jarrenae··on Show HN: I made a GPT-3 thing to help me make better hackathon projects
Yes And? bot was built to help come up with better hackathon ideas. I've found it to be legitimately helpful, and I think it's great for people who struggle to consider the many variables around their idea.

We built it by using GPT-3 on autocomplete, and feeding it this prompt:

In a meeting room, two people are talking about an idea they have for a new startup. The first person needs someone to validate their idea. The second person is very creative and experienced employee, so they are trying to help the first person by pointing out things that might make their idea fail. The second person guides the first person through a thought process towards a successful idea.”

Then we added examples of dialog of these two personas:

First person: “Hey, I was thinking on creating an app for the company so we could get points every month and we send those points for people we like their job.”

Second person: “How do people earn points? And what do they do with them?”

First person: “They get 25 points every month, and they could redeem rewards like caps, t-shirts and custom iPhone cases; things like that so people can feel how much they are appreciated by their team.”

Second person: “Wouldn’t that be a big cost for the company?”

With this the AI(Second person) has context and the format to ask questions the same way during the real conversations.

Thanks, accidentally posted the wrong URL apparently.

jarrenae··on Nicolas Cage movies linked to drownings and other spurious correlations
From the post: "That may sound paradoxical, and it highlights a problem in the use of statistics. There really is a clear, strong and statistically significant correlation between Mr Cage’s annual output and deaths by falling into swimming pools (at least, in the US). And there is also no reason whatever for believing it to be true.

There is every reason for Mr Vigen winning an award for the most entertaining demonstration of one of the most important lessons in statistical science: correlation is not causation."

jarrenae··on Show HN: Hefty Search 2.0 – Search many sites at once with prefixes
Interesting, where are you seeing that? It's working fine on my end. What Browser and version?
jarrenae··on Show HN: Hefty Search 2.0 – Search many sites at once with prefixes
I use custom workflows in Alfred, but I wanted something completely browser-based.

Hefty Search uses custom queries and prefixes to search multiple platforms at once. Users can also add their own sites to the platform. Version 2.0 adds the custom prefixes and customizable groups (click and drag to re-sort).

Each search opens a new tab with the platform search results.

jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
It's not flawless unfortunately. We're simply performing a custom google search. Eventually we'd like to improve the search filtering.
jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
Thank you so much for sharing. I didn't expect this at all, and this is probably the most rewarding thing to hear that has come out of my work personally in a while.

Best wishes.

jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
Agreed. Better filtering would be helpful. I'd also like to add Usenet and book searches eventually as well.
jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
In another one of my same day projects I'd like to add usenet results as well.
jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
Agreed, this is a sort of proof of concept version, and ideally we could more effectively filter out inaccurately dated pages.

Like I mentioned in my original comment, we're performing a custom google search, so unfortunately we're reliant on those results. In a future I'd love to add additional sources like usenet and historical documents!

jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
https://www.usenetarchives.com/ is a good resource for that!

EDIT: seems like search there is broken.

jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
It's exactly why it's a perfect test search to see which sites have inaccurate dates.

My personal theory is that blogs and companies set older dates on purpose to appear as a more legitimate source. But I have absolutely no evidence to back that up. I'd like to make results more accurate by adding other sources eventually as part of another one of my same day projects.

jarrenae··on Show HN: Oldest Search – Search for the oldest result on internet
Oldest Search is a custom google search that specifically targets the oldest entries available. I'm always curious about the first entries for certain data on the internet, it's a valuable perspective builder.

I personally like news articles that have been digitized that were written in the pre-internet era. Unfortunately some results don't always work well because pages have been dated incorrectly. For example, searching "Covid" shows recent results.

I launch new projects like this daily: small tools to increase human agency. I'm also very open to suggestions to improve!

jarrenae··on Show HN: A Map of (Potential) Nuclear Targets
Also we do list any cities with over 5m people.
jarrenae··on Show HN: A Map of (Potential) Nuclear Targets
We're working to add more sources, port cities are a great one to add to the list. We also don't have any hierarchy between sources at this point, but it's something I'd like to add.
jarrenae··on Show HN: Focus Reminder – A 5 minute reminder to stay focused
Ironically I've been using this site as a form of Pomodoro timer, so it has worked with some surprising degree of success!
jarrenae··on Show HN: Redditle.com – For those of us who add 'Reddit' to every Google search
Looks great! sorry to see that the API isn't quite working with all the traffic though.

I actually build the same thing a few weeks back: https://searchbettr.com but it redirects instantly to a Google search so you don't have to deal with the API.
