jaredsohn··on No code reviews by default
If you want to learn more about this, read up on 'continuous deployment'. I remember when I was first exposed to it it seemed dangerous/scary but with the right culture changes it can work really well; lots of companies do it.
jaredsohn··on No code reviews by default
For many developers, people merge their branches directly to production so the pull request review is where that checking happens.
jaredsohn··on Ask HN: What are the potential consequences of working multiple remote jobs?
>80% more pay to work the entire day

5 times the pay, although that technically is >80%

jaredsohn··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
>should be easier to find old classic movies

Was referring to above; Netflix didn't create any of those. But yes, over time they'll have old entries in the Netflix catalog.

Their first original (House of Cards) was only 9 years ago

jaredsohn··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
But at least for Netflix, they didn't make the old content. If you watch content made by the streaming site, it likely costs them less.
jaredsohn··on An Algorithm for Passing Programming Interviews (2020)
>The interviewee's goal is to be evaluated inaccurately.

Only if the interviewee doesn't think they should be hired.

I think a better way to think of this is:

1. The interviewer's goal is to hire somebody that will provide value at the company, using the hiring criteria as a way of judging it.

2. The interviewee's goal is to get an offer at a company that makes sense for their career goals.

These aren't necessarily adversarial.

Basically is converting from being Blockbuster to being HBO.
jaredsohn··on Why Web3?
>But I also find sneaker and stamp collectors equally perplexing,

People for the most part don't get rich off of stamps. Is more of a hobby than an investment.

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: Working with large code base for the first time
To find the frontend code associated with a feature, search the view code for text that you see in the app.

To see how it uses the backend, open the network tab in Chrome developer tools (or equiv in other browsers), look at what requests it makes, and then find corresponding controllers within the code.

Use the blockchain and make it a part of web3

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: How to convince big tech team that tests and code quality matter?
Lot of good reasons above. Another is that if code has solid tests, it makes code review a lot easier / faster, especially if somebody else is modifying your code.
jaredsohn··on Show HN: I redesigned my landing page to be as unprofessional as possible
They should be more toward the middle of the page so they look down more often. Maybe are there because of 'follow on Twitter' and that was best on the bottom of the page.
jaredsohn··on Can we have a Christmas lights in HackerNew bar?
While we're at it, let's just change the mouse cursor to be Christmas-themed. i.e. https://www.cursors-4u.com/cursor/2011/12/25/tiny-christmas-...

A bunch more at https://www.cursors-4u.com/christmas/

For the animation, you need to use IE.

FWIW, I think changing the number colors on Christmas day is sufficient. I like HN's minimalist aesthetic

jaredsohn··on Ask HN: How do you prevent getting spammed?
You may be able to install spam blocker apps for sms that filter on keywords. I do that for political stuff and it works pretty well.

Thanks; vaguely remember that. I think Facebook added some UX to emphasize it more in response to Google Plus

jaredsohn··on What's Your Go to Command When You Open a Terminal?
I assume you're talking about physically logging into different machines since cmd-k is a shortcut key for the terminal and will work regardless of which machine you ssh into.

cmd-k works well for me since I don't think I've personally logged in directly to a non-Mac *nix-like system in 15+ years.

vim is different since it requires configuration on the same system.

This superuser explains some subtle differences between the two commands: https://superuser.com/questions/819593/what-is-the-differenc...

jaredsohn··on What's Your Go to Command When You Open a Terminal?
For people who want this without downloading a script, pressing cmd-k on a Mac (or equiv on other operating systems) will do this quickly on demand.

I guess that's my goto.
