janwillemb··on Kagi for Kids
I'm religious myself. What you are describing is not taught by the bible as it is in its pure form, but is a selection of specific parts of it by the tradition that you are part of. A different, lesser known selection was posted in another comment, about rape and murder. You could also select very boring parts about family lists. Or meticulously detailed instructions about the beard of the priest. It is not wrong to try and live a good life, but that is part of a tradition, not purely based on the bible.
janwillemb··on Upcoming Windows 11 builds cannot install without internet and Microsoft Account
It is very hard to use Android without a Google account. Most people accept that. They must have learnt from that.
janwillemb··on How much are LLMs boosting real-world programmer productivity?
I was in a school team where we had to create documents describing a new curriculum. One of the members thought creating these docs using a LLM was a very easy and productive way of doing it. But it absolutely wasn't. It looked alright at the start, but on closer inspection it was just a load of BS. We had to change literally every single sentence to let the text make sense. I also was in a team that created tools we could use for our students. Again one of the members used a LLM to create certain tools. At first glance they worked alright, until some change was needed. Refactoring wasn't possible - a total rewrite was the only thing that helped. I don't think LLM boosts productivity. At best it boosts the appearance of productivity of one person, and then the others have to clean up after her.
janwillemb··on My legal last name prevents me from completing my Twitch affiliate onboarding
Have you ever been successful in proving though? I found out no one ever listens to me being right about their leak.
janwillemb··on My legal last name prevents me from completing my Twitch affiliate onboarding
This can happen in random circumstances. A long time ago Amazon did not allow me to ship to my home address. By trial and error I found out that if I changed a specific o in my address to something else, it suddenly worked. There are no special reserved or offensive words in the address, I've never found out why this was. It had been fixed since.

Also I own a domain name with a catch all email address. If I sign up for websites, I often use the company name in the email adress to track leaks or spam. They sometimes don't allow this.

janwillemb··on Discovery of fresco portraying Dionysian mysteries at Pompeii
This made me also think of an LLM. But looking into their other press releases this seems to be their style if writing, also for the press releases predating LLMs.
janwillemb··on Age and cognitive skills: Use it or lose it
Good luck! You can do it! I started doing statistics classes three years ago when I was 45, continued doing a MSc degree, which I finished successfully a few months ago. I am now looking into doing a PhD. This is more fun than I ever imagined (fair enough: I was a teenager when imagining it).
janwillemb··on “The closer to the train station, the worse the kebab” – a “study”
He didn't find a correlation, or rather found that there is no correlation, between proximity to a railway station and how the kebab is reviewed. It's a nice study for a statistics class!
janwillemb··on I ask this chess puzzle to every new LLM
it means "in flight"
janwillemb··on First Look: Loops, by Pixelfed – Decentralised TikTok Competitor (2024)
Can you elaborate on why this is "clearly" the case?
janwillemb··on Siyuan: Privacy-first, self-hosted personal knowledge management software
Creating a note taking, personal productivity app is an elaborate but common procrastination technique for developers.
janwillemb··on A skeleton made from the bones of at least eight people thousands of years apart
The source article[1] suggests that (in my own words) it may have to do with several kins that were brought together and tried to seal their bond by assembling a fictive individual from several deceased relatives. Or that an original important burial site was disturbed and they tried to restore the body.

janwillemb··on Router Security
Also, use two routers in serial. One is provided by my isp, the other is my own. The chances of both getting compromised at the same time are lower.
janwillemb··on Show HN: A real time AI video agent with under 1 second of latency
The AI looks at the video to get clues on what to talk about. I have books behind me, it asked about my books.
janwillemb··on Knocking out one key gene leads to autistic traits
Here you go. The ai seems to avoid the term "autism"? Probably configured that way.

janwillemb··on Show HN: Konty – A Balsamiq-alternative lo-fi wireframe tool for modern apps
Looks nice! Maybe add some explanation about licensing on the first pages.

And the name sounds like "butty" in Dutch, so that will be hard for me to recommend out loud for my Dutch IT students.

janwillemb··on Microsoft formally deprecates the Windows Control Panel
Incidentally, my Windows installations never self destruct, and I have used the product on several versions in the last 25+ years (since W95). My Linux installations however have, for example by standard updates.
janwillemb··on Free DDNS with Cloudflare and a cronjob
Parent did not say it was challenging.

I find fiddling with LE tedious because it has to be repeated too often.

janwillemb··on No Uptime Hosting (2006)
It even survives the HN hug of death. Very disappointing.
janwillemb··on No Uptime Hosting (2006)
Free identity theft included!
janwillemb··on Show HN: Probabilistic Tic-Tac-Toe
Nice! And irritating! I would make it a lot faster though. It takes so much time waiting for the animations to finish.
janwillemb··on Worklenz: Open-Source, All in one project management tool
And sw engineers feel very productive building a productivity tool, which is just an elaborate procrastination technique for sw developers.
janwillemb··on You don't have to type faster to type faster
I tried different keyboard layouts. I discovered that, as a developer, the "secondary keys" are at least as important for speed as the regular ones. Enter, semicolon, quotes, arrow keys, minus, plus, equals. If those were an afterthought in the keyboard layout, this significantly reduces speed and joy.

The author suggests abbreviations. I think it depends on the content of your typing how you can improve speed.

janwillemb··on School absences have ‘exploded’ almost everywhere
> attendance has become optional

I recognize this with my own kids and my students. Two things: 1) since the pandemic the bar for a sick day has been lowered drastically. 2) Educational material can be found online in most of the cases, at least in my university. Students think they can handle it themselves from home.

These are not necessarily bad developments. What would be interesting to see is if the drop out rate has increased.

janwillemb··on Show HN: Memories – FOSS Google Photos alternative built for high performance
Somehow I'm relieved by this comment, that it's not just me. I've tried communicating with the author about face recognition and always got answers that I considered slightly rude and off-putting. I shook it off, contributed some money, and I'm still a user. I'll take a look at immich now though.
janwillemb··on Show HN: Memories – FOSS Google Photos alternative built for high performance
Yes but it is very unreliable. Especially for recognizing kids.
janwillemb··on Inside the Massive Alleged AT&T Data Breach
How do you think this works in case of HIBP?
janwillemb··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Do you know how?
janwillemb··on Over the edge: The use of design tactics to undermine browser choice
Outlook has been a nightmare lately regarding this. It could be that it is my organization that pushed this, but links never open in the default browser, and get routed through a Microsoft link, which for some reason does not work on Edge. The only way to open links is to right-click them, copy, open browser, paste in address bar.
janwillemb··on Haier Europe Eases Off on Legal Threat and Seeks Dialogue
Context: German developer Andre Basche has created plugins to connect Haier devices to Home Assistant, apparently via the Haier API. Haier thinks/thought this harms their business model.

From https://www.redpacketsecurity.com/haier-hits-home-assistant-...:

> The plugins offered in the GitHub repositories enable users to control Haier, Candy, and Hoover air conditioners, purifiers, dishwashers, induction hobs, ovens, fridges, washing machines, and dryers through Home Assistant.

> According to a notice published by the repository owner, Haier claims these plugins cause the firm significant financial damage and violate copyright laws, requiring the developer to take them down to avoid further legal action.
