janosett··on Airbnb is in midlife crisis mode
Anywhere you could build a hotel you could also build more housing, so they pose the same issue. There is necessarily some tension between using space for permanent housing and using it for tourism / short term stays. Tourism often keeps a city's economy healthy, and having short term stays is important for those visiting even for non-tourism reasons (e.g. in town to visit family, for work, etc).

The housing issue is more complex than just Airbnb / short-term housing as well: is there enough housing investment? what is the effect of international or corporate investment? are local regulations supporting or sabotaging the effort to build more housing? is there a large speculation market?

janosett··on Let's Ban Billboards
Feels like a possibly important but unrelated issue. Is there some connection to billboards?
janosett··on The CRPG Renaissance, Part 5: Fallout 2 and Baldur's Gate
Baldur’s Gate 3 is recent and very much doesn’t follow the Bethesda model! It’s also turn-based which was a big plus for me as well.
janosett··on A vending machine, on the internet
Seems the App Store link isn’t working for me (in Spain). Would love to give it a try!
janosett··on The Forest Service Is Losing 2,400 Jobs–Including Most of Its Trail Workers
The budget for this has very little bearing on the debt. See where the money actually goes here: https://fiscaldata.treasury.gov/americas-finance-guide/feder...
janosett··on No Salt
I think it’s reasonable not everyone feels the same way about this. I’d prefer for my body not to be washed nor placed in a coffin.
janosett··on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's online rant spurs threats to supes, police reports
Counterproductive, and makes Garry Tan look like a real asshole. Now people will have sympathy for the Supervisors whereas a thoughtful criticism could have put real problems with their leadership on display.
janosett··on Waymo outperforms comparable human benchmarks over 7M+ miles
> If your self-driving car kills or maims someone in a situation where a normal sober person driving wouldn’t have

What if it does this while also _not_ killing/harming in many other situations where a human would have?

janosett··on Kagi Search – Paywalled articles indicator and improved weather widget
You’re paying them to rank and collect information from things on the web for you. People can’t subscribe to everything and it’s nice as a user of a search engine to know if it’s a requirement.
janosett··on Cruise Suspends Employee Share Program, Citing Need to Revalue Business
No, to clarify the salary is being paid but the stock liquidity program ended. However, single trigger RSUs mean tax may still be owed on those RSUs at the market value when they were issued.

So some people owe tax on eg $100k in extra “income” for shares they can’t sell anymore.

janosett··on Cruise Suspends Employee Share Program, Citing Need to Revalue Business
In addition to not getting paid, the employees are left with a tax burden for the RSUs they are now unable to sell since the cancellation happened abruptly in the window between vesting and the liquidity event.
janosett··on Is Google reCAPTCHA GDPR Compliant?
Yes, but the IP itself is not personal without the connection to other information. I do think considering IP address personal is a bit of a reach, especially given the common case of ephemeral addresses.
janosett··on Ellison's Cave
Thanks for sharing this story. I love when I can learn a little more about the experience of something fascinating like Caving but that I don’t have any personal experience with through someone’s comments on HN.

How does one get into Caving or become a “vetted cave explorer”?

janosett··on TikTok tracked users who watched gay content, prompting employee complaints
This is about your view of morals as they relate to religion though, right? Legally speaking priests are employees and the church is the employer. I think our government system should treat them as such.

Whether it’s right or wrong from the perspective of the church or followers of the religion should be separate from our rules about privacy.

janosett··on How Californians are weaponizing environmental law to eliminate housing
Who is “they” in this situation? The issue in this article is developers wanting to build housing being blocked by misuse of an environmental quality law.

If you live in a city with a large and growing population it’s natural to build more housing to accommodate the growth. If you don’t like it you’re also free to “Go live somewhere else!” Right?

janosett··on Ask HN: Why is hiring so dehumanized, and what can be done?
This could be really useful, but it feels like the bootstrapping phase might be difficult to get past -- on one hand you need to reach the size and level of repute for companies be willing to deal with the process, and on the other you need to provide a sufficient value proposition for candidates to contribute to the guild.

I also have some concerns about how you manage problems as this sort of guild scales. How do you keep a consistent standard of skill? what if members performance changes over time?

janosett··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
> Using authority to force cooperation is tyranny.

Wow, this is an odd definition of tyranny. The elected representatives of the people of our state wrote these laws. I personally think it's fair for us to make laws that apply across our state rather than having full autonomy at the city level.

janosett··on Researchers cannot always differentiate AI-generated and original abstracts
How easy would it be for researchers to differentiate deliberately fabricated abstracts written by humans from abstracts of peer-reviewed scientific papers from respected publications? I think the answer to that question might give more context to this result.
janosett··on Meta prohibited from using personal data for advertisement
These policies stem from elected officials, as far as I can tell. How else would you propose they make policy decisions?

My impression is these decisions are related to genuine concern about how tech companies collect and use personal data.

janosett··on Silicon Valley offices less empty than other regions
> Work is something I reluctantly do to fund the things I actually care about. It sure as hell isn’t my entire life or cause for existence.

Some of us prefer to care about our work. 40 hours per week is a lot of time to spend on something you don’t care about. Caring about your work isn’t the same as it being your “entire life or cause for existence”. Our lives can consist of many different interests.

janosett··on The Life of Octavia Butler
I would add that if you want a quick intro to her writing style and diversity, her short story collection “Bloodchild and Other Stories” is great.
janosett··on Working class people paid thousands less despite doing same jobs
You’re assuming being born into an affluent family is the cause of the higher pay. Is it possible that the employees from affluent families are higher performing?

I assume there’s significant class bias but I think considering only that factor is a little reductive.

janosett··on Why I program in Erlang (2012)
Maybe Scala : Java :: Elixir : Erlang
janosett··on Twitter Sues Elon Musk
The people involved in the lawsuit that Twitter won will not likely have trouble finding another job. That will be a career triumph!
janosett··on Mastering the Game of Stratego with Model-Free Multiagent Reinforcement Learning
You might consider reading the linked abstract: “… Stratego has been a grand challenge for the field of AI for decades, and existing AI methods barely reach an amateur level of play.”
janosett··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
The Apple TV does this, essentially.
janosett··on List of games that Buddha would not play
I hope that’s true :-)

I don’t have anything against the Buddha, but I don’t like the moralization throughout history of different things that people enjoy — e.g. games or certain types of books and visual art.

This is happening today with video games to some extent.

janosett··on List of games that Buddha would not play
Imagine you think video games are a waste of time, or that a certain food type shouldn’t be eaten because it’s unhealthy or unclean.

Those are fine opinions to hold personally, but obviously many people may disagree. The self-importance I meant is when you think your opinions are more important than those of others and try to control their behavior.

FWIW— I’ve since edited the post because I think that wording makes it seem unnecessarily negative on my part.

janosett··on List of games that Buddha would not play
This reveals a bit how the Buddha, like other religious leaders throughout history, sought to control the behavior of his followers and decide where they should derive their joy from.

It feels like this sort of prescriptive thinker is exactly the type of person we should not listen to. Why should we think their moral compass / philosophy is better guided than our own? If a certain form of game is fun and not harming others, why not continue it?

Edited: removing “self-important” description as it was unnecessarily negative to make my point

janosett··on The gift of it's your problem now
I don’t think this analogy really holds. Whereas one person or a closed group usually organize a party, open source is, well, open!

We could re-imagine this as a potluck I suppose. If you decide to bring nothing, you can’t really complain if the food is awful.
