jankotek··on Hypersim, Photorealistic Synthetic Dataset for Indoor Scene Understanding
I believe GPU would be more expensive, it would increase human labor too much.

CPU is universal and has more RAM. Optimizing very sophisticated ray tracing for GPU with tiny amount of VRAM could be very tricky. It is easier to do dirty code on CPU, and wait for couple of weeks.

Apple also had spare CPU cycles. This stuff could run overnight in background.

jankotek··on FreeBSD src repository is transitioning from Subversion to Git this weekend
Brute force it; write a script to checkout every revision from SVN, checkin into git.

I recall similar quote from Steve Jobs about workstations market, Sun and Next.

jankotek··on How many GNU/Linux users are needed to change a light bulb?
In IoT only one person is needed to change a light bulb. But it will take 7 days of soldering, debuging and reverse engineering :)
jankotek··on How many GNU/Linux users are needed to change a light bulb?
Not so funny with modern IoT, maybe firmware upgrade is needed or restart wireless router :)
jankotek··on Centos.rip
"free lunch" is just untrue. Opensource and GPL does not work this way.

Also Redhat just cut support on one of its projects. Their business model is build on their reputation and long term support. Not best long term move.

jankotek··on Qt 6.0
Like 5 year old? Well, I have consulting business and sell solutions based on QT5. I can not use QT6, because it is impossible to buy a license for QT6.
jankotek··on AirPods Max
Well, I would consider myself to be an audiophile. I got professional level equipment for about $400 many many years ago. Today it is probably even cheaper. I spend a lot of time on PSU, interference from power grid etc... Solved by $20 car battery...

For an "audiophile" AirPods are ripoff similar to CD demagnetizer.

jankotek··on AirPods Max
I think it is rather naive view. Audio market is an industry with professionals.

You can buy spare parts for 30-years old studio headphones. Apple with their "no repair allowed" business model and 500ms latency is a joke.

jankotek··on AirPods Max
$500 for headphones is fine, if they would last 20 years.

AirPods look like flimsy plastic stuff. For portable heapdhones they are not water resistant, do not fold and not even come with hard case. And given apple, there will be no spare parts and manuals.

Get Sony, much better value.

jankotek··on The Dec 21, 2020 Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn
You need very good location with unobstructed view over western horizont. Some preparation and a bit of luck with weather. It is not a rocket science.

But get telescope in any case. Even cheap stuff from Lidl will show some details on saturn rings and cloud belts on jupiter. And there is also Moon and stars..

You have no idea how regions in EU works. They do not get money from cheap water produced abroad, it only dilutes their brand.
jankotek··on Thunderbird 78.x is great but has issues for advanced PGP users
Thunderbird has simplified html viewer, no css etc, works pretty well.
jankotek··on Dutch journalist gatecrashes EU defence video conference
But it should not matter how secure chatting software is. This sort of stuff should be on offline VPM, separated from normal internet. If officials are using their personal devices for this....
jankotek··on Ask HN: Will Apple M1 mean better support for Raspberry Pi?
MacOS has privacy issues. But if Linux works fine on M1... Finally great ARM based workstation.
jankotek··on Virgin Hyperloop Has Invented the World's Crappiest High-Speed Rail
Pressure wave moves at speed of sound. Lightweigh capsule gets destroyed just by derailing at 500mph. Any bad event will put down ALL trains on track. And rescuing people trapped in 100 miles long steel pipe...

Hyperloop is a nightmare!

jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
No progress is possible without HR department :)
jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
My point is about doing research without PhD as a hobby. Since I would not get paid anyway, I do not see reason to spend a few years, just to get paperwork sorted. Most data are publicly available. Most researchers are very happy for helping hand.

Privately founded research instruments are different topic.

LIGO data are here: https://www.ligo.caltech.edu/page/ligo-data

Xray data are also publicly available, I would suggest skyview https://skyview.gsfc.nasa.gov/current/cgi/query.pl

Requests for Arecibo telescope are here: https://www.naic.edu/ao/scientist-user-portal/proposal-submi...

jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
I have personal experience from those two fields. Perhaps other fields are different. But trust me, you do not need a PhD to get observing time on 4 meter telescope.
jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
Work independently with $1k telescope from balcony? Why? This is completely out of context.

First I talked about data analysis and software development.

Secondly, even in observational astronomy, anyone can make proposal and get observing time on large instrument. Or rent 20" in Chile and use it remotely.

jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
Cost of masters degree, living cost in expensive city, lost wages... It is expensive!

You do not have to be member of academia to interact with other researches.

》This seems pretty unfunded. Unless you mean most people who have already done a PhD.

My experience is from astronomy and cryptography. You can make good contribution without being part of academia. Data are freely available on internet. Also code.

jankotek··on How Academia Resembles a Drug Gang (2013)
If it is just a hobby, why bother with expensive university? Most people can perform perfectly valid research from their bedroom or garage.

To be fair, it is very difficult to find car without touch screen today. Or with power switch that physically cuts power to the engine, fuel pump and ignition. Or without GPS tracker...
jankotek··on Catala: a programming language for socio-fiscal legislative literate programming
How is this different from normal languages such as Java? Lawyers do not have a problem to learn actual programming language. This does not have a IDE support and all the goodies.

We implemented tax law. Split each paragraph as a javadoc for method. Manually calculated data were read from excel sheets, and unit tested. We even used Jira for bug tracking and integration.

jankotek··on I Think Bluetooth Is Finally OK
Headset voice has to squeeze over GSM voice channel, that is 9.6kbps.

I had pretty smooth experience with using Pulse with multiple sinks/sources, maybe look into doc. Only problem I had was latency sync while multiple sinks play together.

jankotek··on How to arm Caesarean babies with the gut bacteria they need
》While the origins of the human milk microbiome are not exactly known,[1] several hypotheses for its establishment have been proposed

》Alternatively, bacteria may be translocated to the mammary duct from the maternal gastrointestinal tract via an entero-mammary pathway, facilitated by dendritic cells.
