jandeboevrie··on Bash HTTP Monitoring Dashboard
Those you might expect on a modern Linux system when bash is there (coreutils will be there 99% of the time as well). Not all distros ship curl by default
jandeboevrie··on Installing OpenVMS 8.4 Alpha inside AXPbox with networking
The SCSI controller is less stable (more buggy) than the IDE controller, but glad it works for you! The non fatal errors are okay as well, now time for you to setup a cluster!
jandeboevrie··on Qt Support for State Charts
This reminds me of (now from IBM) rational rhapsody from i-logix. Great tool back in 2004 for embedded development and c++ state charts. Also a nice c++ framework, oxf and Omreactive, almost revolutionary for that time. Still being maintained by IBM nowadays but on life support as far as I know.
jandeboevrie··on An Honest Review of Gatsby
All that useless effort for just some static pages. Can't believe how much money, time and resources are wasted by these hipsters. Why don't they solve actual problems that could help our race, instead of resume driven hipsterness.
jandeboevrie··on Impressive backyard engineering on an obscure YouTube channel
Townsend is a 18th century cooking channel but just recently built a wood cabin: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxr2d4As312LulcajAkKJYw
jandeboevrie··on I had to jailbreak my iPhone to change the default browser
Even tough the rendering engine is the same, the features that make the browser useful for them, like bookmark sync and appearance, can make more difference than underlying tech. No website I ever visit behaves badly in the three (two nowadays, we kit and gecko) major browsers...
jandeboevrie··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
Will be cool to update our MFC app to look better. Wonder if it will still work on wine then, it does now with VS2019 and the old win 98 look. But the app is almost 20 years old... Still maintained and worked on today. And until ms stops support MFC, no change needed. Change just costs money for no significant profit or advantage to us or our customers.
jandeboevrie··on Cyclecar
Or, if you want to buy one right now: http://en.velomobiel.nl/ - both three and four wheel versions. Using it myself to cycle 60km a day to work in any type of weather with normal clothes.
jandeboevrie··on WireGuard Gives Linux a Faster, More Secure VPN
Freedombox makes wireguard so incredibly easy to deploy: https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/Wireguard_VPN_on_Freedombox.h...
jandeboevrie··on Systemd Is Approaching 1.3M Lines
I hate that systemd refuses to work in a chroot. With all those extra services in systemd like dns, it's impossible to run in a container or chroot... And the developers blatantly refuse to fix that.
jandeboevrie··on Ask HN: Do you still use RSS?
Heavily. Preferably text only, full text. I've just written about it: https://raymii.org/s/articles/Tiny-Tiny-RSS-Readability-plai...

I've got almost a thousand feeds I'm following actively.

jandeboevrie··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
I once wrote on how to disable parts of the ubuntu motd: https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/Disable_dynamic_motd_and_motd... - it's way more complicated then it should be IMHO.
jandeboevrie··on OnlyKey: Open-Source Alternative to YubiKey
The Nitrokey HSM also has sort of a private key extraction, but that is by design: https://raymii.org/s/articles/Decrypt_NitroKey_HSM_or_SmartC...
jandeboevrie··on OnlyKey: Open-Source Alternative to YubiKey
The only true open hardware and open source key is the Nitrokey Start, running Gnuk firmware. Other nitrokeys are open hardware but run a smartcard (hsm or pgpcard) and those firmwares are not fully open. Yubikey is closed source and this posts bugger is closed as well. Go for a Nitrokey if you value true openness.
jandeboevrie··on Monica: Open-source personal CRM
The app which let's you browse the internet? Type in the address of your server and you should be presented with Monica. Works quite well on mobile.
jandeboevrie··on Visual Studio Code repository is open again
If they had balls they would tell that user to STFU and go so something useful. If you worry about such things and oppress others by pushing your feelings like a spoiled child, you have way too much time on your hands...
jandeboevrie··on Tell HN: CNN Lite no longer functional
For anyone wanting text only news, here's a gopher service: https://txtn.ws. With a http proxy it's almost as usable as via gopher.
jandeboevrie··on Faults in Post Office accounting system led to workers being convicted of theft
Anyone know technical details about the software? What language, what hardware, clustering, etc?
jandeboevrie··on How to write better game libraries
This is bad advice on the c++ part. If you don't use RAII, then you could've just not done the c++ lib (and have just a c lib). Exceptions, raii and smart pointers are what makes modern c++ so pleasant, next to templates.
jandeboevrie··on Show HN: A small bootstrapped independent VPN company in the Netherlands
I've worked with the founder (Joost H., Remy says Hi). Can vouch for him, all-round good tech guy. He was a Windows server admin at a big cloud provider (CloudVPS), I was one of the Linux guys. He knows his way around Windows, hyper v and clustering. Even some Linux. Quit his job to work full time on the startup with his brother.

Big plus one here. I'd trust wifimask if I wasn't capable of hosting my own servers and needed a VPN.

jandeboevrie··on YouTube’s annoying Premium spam
YouTube Vanced or Peertube don't show ads. They do show stories, which are stupid as well. Just as the recommendations are shit lately. Just more of the same instead of new interesting things.

If I can't block ads then I'll stop using YouTube. Did for half a year when I was on ios where adblock in the app didn't work.

jandeboevrie··on If You Build It, the Dutch Will Pedal (2017)
Don't take a baby to a dinner bar then? Or just stand up and talk to the people, ask them to be a bit less noisyer. How would they know otherwise?
jandeboevrie··on How expensive is it to parse numbers from a string in C++?
Why would he not use std::stoi?
jandeboevrie··on European Commission President Juncker tweets that a Brexit deal has been done
Duplicate of https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21280334
jandeboevrie··on VxWorks now with C++17 and Rust support, alongside Ada and SPARK
Do we have any hn members who develop voor vxworks? If so could you please describe how and what you do?
jandeboevrie··on Keyhut POS: Free Point-of-Sale Software for DOS
For your last question, here's something I wrote some time ago to do just that: https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/Run_software_on_tty1_console_...
jandeboevrie··on Keyhut POS: Free Point-of-Sale Software for DOS
After the reddit explosion I emailed the guy and donated $5. He personally replied, seems to be a cool lad. So if you can spare some cash, you'll make him very happy.
jandeboevrie··on Teardown of a Failed Linux LTS Spectre Fix
Man that attitude of the grsecurity folks is bad. Oh look how great our process and fix is and how fast we are. And look how bad them kernel folks are. Yuk.
jandeboevrie··on Building Interactive SSH Applications
Be careful with the authorized keys file approach. If the commands allow the user to append content to it, the commands can be changed. Most of the time the file is writable by the user (unless you specify otherwise in the opensshd configuration)
jandeboevrie··on Pokemonsay: Pokemon Version of Cowsay
I agree. Fat shaming for software. Otherwise you'll end up with a terminal emulator written with electron. Oh wait, that already exists.

But seriously. If you don't tell people politely and explain what and why it's wrong, they'll never know that what they're doing could be better. Just ranting and shaming might not be the best way. Still I agree with all the NodeJS hate.
