jancborchardt··on What I use instead of Google services
ownCloud contributor here: Just wanted to say major thanks for such a great project! Keep it up and let us know if you need anything from ownCloud – we’re in #owncloud-dev on IRC :)
jancborchardt··on What I use instead of Google services
As also mentioned in the other comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8259809 ) we’re working on a webmail interface (simple IMAP client for now): https://github.com/owncloud/mail
jancborchardt··on What I use instead of Google services
If you want to alpha-test it, we’re also working on a Mail app for ownCloud on the side: https://github.com/owncloud/mail

Just clone it, install the dependencies via composer and you’re good to go. It’s just an IMAP client at the moment, but multi-account and when the IMAP server is on the same origin as ownCloud it’s quite fast. Feedback very welcome!

ownCloud supports sharing links, also direct links to files: https://owncloud.org

A service using open source software is a pretty good indicator that they will not sell out. Or even if they do, you will still be able to continue to use it by self-hosting or using a different provider.
jancborchardt··on Localtunnel.me
Oh nice! This looks very similar to https://pagekite.net (which is also open source), minus the need for an account. Good call.
jancborchardt··on Condoleezza Rice Joins Dropbox’s Board As It Names New CFO, COO
Simple syncing is what ownCloud does. Of course technically a server is inbetween, so it’s not directly between devices. LAN sync is requested sometimes, but currently not a priority.

Please do let us know about the things you miss – on our issue tracker at http://github.com/owncloud/core/issues And if you use IRC you’re welcome in #owncloud-dev (freenode).

And be sure that we have a lot of improvements lined up for ownCloud 7 which will come out in a few weeks.

EDIT: Also, if you have specific feedback on ownCloud’s usability and design let me know, I work on that.

jancborchardt··on Show HN: We've open-sourced our bootstrapped startup, ShareLaTeX
Do you have a logo for the app? I would really like to add it to the directory at http://libreprojects.net :)
jancborchardt··on Show HN: I built this game alone – design, code, music, sound, marketing
That’s so good to hear! The original Eliss is one of my all-time-favorite games – unfortunately I don’t have an iOS device at the moment.
jancborchardt··on Build your own private, encrypted, open-source Dropbox clone 2.0
If you used 4.5.x I encourage you to try the latest stable server (5.0.9) and client (1.3.0) again: http://owncloud.org/sync-clients/

Especially the duplicate issues are fixed with the 1.3.0 release.

jancborchardt··on Build your own private, encrypted, open-source Dropbox clone
Yes, it’s difficult but I don’t think »roll-your-own is not going to be able to compete«.

(Disclaimer: I’m interaction designer on ownCloud.) With ownCloud Inc. we have a company, customers and full-time employees. There’s no reason for it to not be able to compete except time needed to catch up to par.

And also the code happens to be open source. In that respect it’s a challenge because we don’t have the one centralized reference server where everyone has an account. There are people running it on Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS, Windows Server, …, Apache, Nginx, Lighttpd, …, with MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL, Oracle, …, not to mention the different browsers people use it with (we support down to IE8) and operating systems the clients use.

Anyway, I digress. ownCloud is also a synchronization service for desktop and mobile devices. In fact we don’t have any system-to-system syncing built-in.

The mobile clients and especially the desktop client have gained a lot in stability in the last few weeks – if you’ve tried before, I encourage you to give it another shot. We’re also in the process of reworking the design for the mobile apps. Overall simplification, better visual design. Let me know if you have any specific feedback.

»Facebook and Twitter are not social networks, they are just platforms. _We_ are the social network.«

– Amr Gharbeia (https://twitter.com/gharbeia ), a few years ago at a conference, commenting on their activism in Egypt and coping with overload and unavailability of Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Also fully agree with your other points. I don’t use Facebook (Twitter though) and just email people whom I care about. Works fine, and those who really care have no problem with you not being on Facebook.

jancborchardt··on Where will Google Reader traffic go?
(Sorry for the late reply, didn’t see your comment!)

Yeah, we’re focused on Apache, but there’s documentation for Nginx and others at https://github.com/owncloud/documentation/blob/stable5/admin...

If you have improvements to the documentation, please contribute at https://github.com/owncloud/documentation/blob/stable5/admin...

Thank you!

ownCloud designer here, thank you for the kind words! Two things you might like:

* We’re reworking the Music app this summer, see http://kabum.github.io/2013/06/20/GSoC-First-report/

* There is a stable News app to read RSS feeds: http://algorithmsforthekitchen.com/blog/?p=580

Cheers!

jancborchardt··on Don't be evil: Moving everything off of Google
The problem with that is that while you might be conscious of that, other people might not be. And you using Facebook and Gmail pulls these people in, for example an email sent to you by someone not using Gmail will still end up on Google’s servers.
jancborchardt··on Don't be evil: Moving everything off of Google
ownCloud designer here, thank you for all the shout outs!

There’s also a great RSS feed reader for ownCloud since some time: http://algorithmsforthekitchen.com/blog/?p=580 – installable from the App settings, would be cool if you can add that.

jancborchardt··on Photographer.io is now open source
I recommend putting it up on http://transifex.com for translation, we use that for ownCloud too. There’s a command-line tool to update strings and to import new translations, and Transifex is open source as well.
jancborchardt··on Where will Google Reader traffic go?
Yep. If you have any feedback or want to contribute please join in. :) All our stuff is at http://github.com/owncloud

* ownCloud is mainly for LAMP but also works on Nginx (which I presume is the N): http://owncloud.org

* it’s a web app, and there are several mobile clients: https://github.com/owncloud/news#mobile-clients

* simple UI. What do you mean by »Inbox system«? (If it’s »unread items«, we have that)

* it’s open source, AGPL v3, code up at https://github.com/owncloud/news

* Plus: We have an API so anyone can code apps for it: https://github.com/owncloud/news/wiki/API-1.2

What do you think?

No, I will not get on it. Comments like yours above are a big reason why women feel uncomfortable in our community. Hacker News is not a platform for perpetuating the ancient and ostracizing concept that hackers are a bunch of guys.

Or very right, see the discussion on that same article: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5636090

Depends on what your view of success and right/wrong is.

As I said in another comment:

» Rating the websites and making these ratings easily available is only the first step. Raising people’s awareness of bad terms and then getting services to actually use proper terms is the actual goal.«

jancborchardt··on Terms of Service; Didn't Read
Yes, we had some people ask us about that. It’s not really our core focus so we will probably not do it, but if anyone wants to build it our data is all open source and freely licensed: http://github.com/tosdr

This comparison is uncalled for and demeaning. Please refrain from posting sexist jokes which add nothing to the discussion.

Please check the page again, we have the rating for Google since a few weeks.Facebook will follow very soon. Also we reorganized the sorting on the frontpage so rated services come first.

Thank you for the suggestions! We already consider point 1 because we took over TOSback, a project started by EFF to track changes in ToS.

As for point 2: We always welcome contributors! Either submit a feature in the tracker or dig into the code yourself: http://github.com/tosdr
