jancborchardt··on Introducing the Nextcloud Box
Work is being done to make it compatible with Raspberry Pi 3. :)
jancborchardt··on Introducing the Nextcloud Box
Hey there – I’m interaction designer at Nextcloud and did the exterior design of the box (little of the interior as that was indeed done by WDLabs).

We’re working on improvements to the box and the bends of the cables are something we take into account. Also the power cable sticking out of the back.

As written elsewhere, it’s a reference device, which was then also used by other open source projects like OSMC: https://osmc.tv/2016/08/announcing-the-osmc-pidrive/

So being a fully open source project we are happy about any contributions, especially if you are knowledgeable in that field. In any case I will forward your recommendations to the team, so thanks a lot already! (I’m sure they also thought about these things so I’ll let you know.) :)

jancborchardt··on I gave commit rights to someone I didn't know
Similar here: At Nextcloud we are also radically inclusive and have never seen a case of vandalism.

Granted, there were few occurences of accidental pushes to master here and there. But that’s where git itself helps and also the recent addition of protected branches on Github is very useful. :)

If the community is open and these artificial barriers to entry are removed, then people are way more likely to get involved.

jancborchardt··on OwnCloud Statement concerning the formation of Nextcloud
Well, legal stuff and also you just don't badmouth people you worked with until recently. It's simply not nice, and we are still friends with some of the Inc employees.

For more info I recommend the Q&A from Frank and Jos today: https://youtube.com/watch?v=iMfokaX2r8g – we try to be as honest as we can.

Disclaimer/source: I'm one of the »poached developers«, or rather the designer. ;)

jancborchardt··on Owncloud has been forked into Nextcloud
Thank you, very cool to hear! :)

You are of course very welcome to contribute again – just check https://github.com/nextcloud or join us in IRC #nextcloud or #nextcloud-dev (freenode).

jancborchardt··on Owncloud has been forked into Nextcloud
Most likely this is what needs to happen sooner or later. For now the existing iOS app can be used of course since it can connect to any ownCloud/Nextcloud server. Or any WebDAV app, for that matter cause we support open standards.

We will make sure though that this problem does not arise again since there will be a Nextcloud foundation which is in full control of the copyrights.

Disclaimer: I am the former designer of ownCloud and moved on to Nextcloud.

jancborchardt··on Owncloud has been forked into Nextcloud
It’s not a »risk which was taken«. ownCloud started out as a pure open source project and the company was formed later.

Having it under a free software license / open source is exactly so that the community can step in when there is a problem with the company.

Disclaimer: I am one of the people who left ownCloud for Nextcloud. Also one of the first contributors to the project when it was still very young, and the company didn’t exist yet.

jancborchardt··on Owncloud has been forked into Nextcloud
> since it was a startup founded by techies for the longest time

Well … we do have capable people who know how to properly design and develop products. We always work to make it easy to use for normal people and not only for techies. And I think the success proves that we did at least something right.

Disclaimer: I was the design lead for ownCloud and now moved on to Nextcloud.

jancborchardt··on Blue Ocean: a new user experience for Jenkins
Great stuff! Working as designer on ownCloud where we use Jenkins it always felt outdated in the design department. Really good to see the improvements!

I also added the main contributors of the repository to the Open Source Design collective at https://github.com/opensourcedesign, more info at http://opensourcedesign.net – welcome! :)

jancborchardt··on Mozilla Wants To Split Off Its Thunderbird Email/Chat Client
While we’re still at a pretty early pre-release version, we already do multiple accounts and unified inbox with ownCloud Mail: https://github.com/owncloud/mail

If you do try it, please let us know of your feedback in the issue tracker! :)

(And that is, you can also run ownCloud with the Mail app locally. We’re working on improved caching.)

jancborchardt··on Show HN: HackerCouch
Original Hackercouch dude here https://github.com/jancborchardt/hackercouch – thanks for taking my concept and driving it forward! :)
jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
You’re welcome! Let us know of any issues or feedback at https://github.com/owncloud/news/issues :)
jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
If you really have problems with ownCloud, then please report them at our issue tracker https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues in more detail than »eats files«. Then we can actually fix the problem.

About the delta sync: There’s plans being made and work being done on it. It’s locked because all people get notified on every »+1« comment and that doesn’t help to focus and get actual work done. Besides, do you really believe that USD 1200 will swiftly take care of implementing this feature?

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
This sounds a lot like Tomahawk: https://tomahawk-player.org/ – playing from different sources and all. Of course that’s a desktop app, but it’s pretty popular already and well designed.
jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
You can enable and disable pretty much everything – except Files. That’s because it’s the core app and others like Gallery, PDF viewing, Music etc of course rely on there being files. There have been requests to even make it possible to disable the Files app, but we don’t really see that as priority and rather focus on keeping ownCloud rock stable and secure while still driving features forward. We are a very small team and an open source project, so I guess that’s understandable. :)

As a really dirty hack, meanwhile you could just hide the Files icon from the menu via CSS. But, well … ;)

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
Since you already use ownCloud, you might want to check out the News app: https://apps.owncloud.com/content/show.php/News?content=1680...

It’s pretty cool, basically like TT-RSS but it looks more modern and is integrated in ownCloud. There are also apps for almost all platforms, like apps for Android & iOS which download all articles (and even podcasts) for offline reading.

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
Heya, I run a similar site since ages: http://libreprojects.net :)

The focus is on highlighting one (the best) alternative in a given field, and limit the ones listed to those which are well-designed, open source of course, and also have a hosted instance so it’s ready to use for anyone without a server.

I’m sure you already know of https://prism-break.org/ ?

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
ownCloud also has a Documents app: https://owncloud.org/blog/owncloud-7-sneak-peek-online-colla...

It works with odt files and you can edit collaboratively, even with people not on ownCloud. Spreadsheets and presentations are not there yet because that’s really difficult. :)

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
And by the way, ownCloud also has a News reader: https://apps.owncloud.com/content/show.php/News?content=1680... (we’re working on a redesign of the appstore, don’t worry ;)

There’s apps for Android & iOS which download all items for offline reading. The Android app can even download podcasts and videos of Youtube channels.

There’s also apps for OS X, Linux, Firefox OS, Blackberry and Jolla as far as I know.

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
There is a pull request with a fix for the Android issue you describe: https://github.com/owncloud/android/pull/1168 Would be very helpful if you can test it! :)
jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
ownCloud designer here – thanks a lot for the kind words! We’re also about to improve the web interfaces for Calendar and Contacts in coming ownCloud versions.

Also, I’m glad you like the Mail app although it’s in a very early stage! If you experience any issues or have feature requests, please let us know at https://github.com/owncloud/mail/issues :)

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
Hey Mooty, nice that you like ownCloud. However, »very buggy« is not very specific. It would be cool if you could open actual issues in our tracker at https://github.com/owncloud/core/issues/ so we can actually fix it.

Thanks! :)

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
If someone wants to push forward porting ownCloud to Sandstorm, check out this existing issue about it: https://github.com/sandstorm-io/sandstorm/issues/89

For any help regarding ownCloud internals, everyone is very welcome in our IRC channel #owncloud-dev (on freenode).

jancborchardt··on Self-hosted alternatives to popular cloud services
Exactly why ownCloud implements CalDAV and CardDAV, the common standard for Calendar and Contact sync. No reinventing the wheel here. Also, exporting your data is as simple as pressing the download button and getting an ics / vcf file.
jancborchardt··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read
We are an open source effort and all our main folks have other things to do. Despite the popularity the project gets and however much people like it, there’s not a big influx of community contributors.

If you want to get involved, please see https://tosdr.org/contribute.html – thank you!

jancborchardt··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read
Yes please – for info on how to get involved please check https://tosdr.org/contribute.html – thanks!
jancborchardt··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read
We could really need help from people who want to get involved, and just people who want to rate one site.

Find out how to contribute here: https://tosdr.org/contribute.html Thanks! :)

jancborchardt··on Terms of Service, Didn't Read

jancborchardt··on Shout – A web IRC client
Yeah, I hope the author here collaborates with Convos, http://ircanywhere.com, and the mentioned Subway (https://github.com/thedjpetersen/subway ) in some way.

Otherwise I see 4 open source web-based IRC clients with very few regular contributors each. And the only really good IRC web client will still be IRCCloud (which is proprietary).

jancborchardt··on Show HN: CloudTunes
There is this basic Tomahawk webapp: http://toma.hk/ – it doesn’t seem like it’s very actively developed though.

Then there is also Youtify: http://youtify.com – open source as well https://github.com/youtify/youtify but stale for some time.
