jammygit··on Would aliens understand lambda calculus? (2018)
I personally hold that math is a science of sorts that is grounded in physical reality. What then if their maths were experimental in nature with less logical abstraction?
jammygit··on My company sold for $100M and I got zilch – how can that be?
I feel like legal manipulation is very bad for the startup ecosystem. Even here, at the YC forums, people assume their startup equity is worth $0 and advise you to go with a FAANG (or day that they broke even with friends at faangs after their exits). How is a legitimate startup supposed to recruit the best people under these conditions?
jammygit··on Bill Gates on Windows Usability (2003)
I installed Manjaro xfce recently and have been extremely impressed by how easy so many things are. I had been using gnome before that, Mac before that, and yet earlier Microsoft had not added telemetry so I used windows
jammygit··on Gmail marking email from me as spam
Could you sue Google for slander in a case like this? They are explicitly labeling your messages as being manipulative or dishonest without any just cause. Why does it matter it’s an algorithm instead of a careless person in power?
jammygit··on SkipTheDishes denies wrongdoing as more billing fraud cases come forward
Last month I was looking at the skipthedishes iOS reviews and they were flooded with these accusations. I’ve used the service for a few years without issue but some people have had bad luck
jammygit··on Signal Technology Foundation is now open for donations
Microsoft is pretty well funded too
jammygit··on Signal Technology Foundation is now open for donations
A secure messenger is important for civil society, but that is a good amount of funding to play with. Time to send some extra money to other foundations? Which other tech foundations are worth donating to these days?

Ideas:

- EFF

- Mozilla

- Software Freedom Conservancy

jammygit··on Signal Technology Foundation is now open for donations
If could be very relevant for journalists in general. I wonder if they just use burner phones in conjunction with it
jammygit··on Signal Technology Foundation is now open for donations
There is also the matter of scale however: if you could grow your users, maybe you could secure more funding/donors long term as well
jammygit··on Update on free software and telemetry
Seems like a good time to ask: who is using source hut? How do they find the email driven merge request process?
jammygit··on Ubuntu Touch OTA-11 Release
I used Ubuntu touch once and liked it. It just didn’t have an app or two I needed or else I would have stuck with it
jammygit··on Amazon rainforest 'close to irreversible tipping point'
>Forecast suggests rainforest could stop producing enough rain to sustain itself by 2021

> The report sparked controversy among climate scientists. Some believe the tipping point is still 15 to 20 years away, while others say the warning accurately reflects the danger that Bolsonaro and global heating pose to the Amazon’s survival.

Would this count as an example of a future positive feedback loop?

jammygit··on Edward Snowden on The Joe Rogan Experience [video]
Is there really anything simple about “running the media”?
jammygit··on Edward Snowden on The Joe Rogan Experience [video]
I had hoped that things under trump would have been much worse, so as to shock the public into re-evaluating their civic values.
jammygit··on Why iOS 13 and Catalina Are So Buggy
My wife’s Iphone lost most of its battery life since the update. Very dramatic difference
jammygit··on How do you tackle fear?
I think you need to do things that build your self efficacy. If you start with small wins, larger things will not be as intimidating.
jammygit··on Xfce 4.16 development phase starting
> Let’s start with one very important and obvious change: we will drop Gtk2 support with Xfce 4.16. This will have a concrete effect on old Panel plugins or Gtk2 applications that rely on libxfce4ui.

I read a blog by dedoimedo who complains constantly at how willing Linux developers are to break things / not maintain compatibility. It makes me think of how I take for granted how so many of my old pc games will still run on windows 10. Not that the telemetry is acceptable

jammygit··on Xfce 4.16 development phase starting
The main reason I use gnome is the keyboard shortcuts. I tried most other desktop environments and I just needed the mouse too often. Being able to see all open applications with Super is really nice too.
jammygit··on Unfollowing Everybody (2018)
I unfollowed everybody until my Facebook feed was empty. I still clicked compulsively for a while to look at my feed, but now I haven’t logged in in 6-12 months except to ask for somebody’s phone number
jammygit··on “We have no reason to believe 5G is safe”
Releasing things into our daily environment without adequate testing is likely why so many men are infertile now compared to a few decades ago and we don’t know why. Sperm counts are halved for example. At least there is some research in this case, which is nice
jammygit··on Ask HN: How much do you make at a startup?
No options for Canadians
jammygit··on BlizzCon 2019 Protest “Full-Steam Ahead,” Say Organizers
Blizzard is apparently giving out 24 hour band for talking about hk in hearthstone streams too. I don’t think anyone really doubts it’s to appease China
jammygit··on Ask HN: What are the most fundamental books on computer science?
I suppose we should talk about our favourite algorithms/data structures books here. I like Drozdek for data structures: very clear yet concise with both theoretical rigour and application
jammygit··on Ask HN: What are the most fundamental books on computer science?
I found tanenbaums book to be incredible, personally
jammygit··on Ask HN: What are the most fundamental books on computer science?
What is it that makes each fundamental?
jammygit··on Blizzard Postpones World of Warcraft 15th Anniversary Event in Taiwan
It makes sense. In their new Chinese outlook, Taiwan does not exist
jammygit··on Don't Call Yourself a Programmer, and Other Career Advice (2011)
Doesn’t brooks say that adding manpower to an already late project makes the project later?
jammygit··on Don't Call Yourself a Programmer, and Other Career Advice (2011)
It’s not current speed that matters but acceleration and max speed
jammygit··on Don't Call Yourself a Programmer, and Other Career Advice (2011)
This is only true because average teams get annoyed at having people trying to push the project along in ways they do not understand. In most of my jobs, average people really appreciate stability and do not like change. To fit in, you end up having to do less work and transfer your energy to side projects or hobbies
jammygit··on Ask HN: How do you deal with depression?
