jamisteven··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
LMFAO, have you ever been to a restaurant in Europe? The service is horrific. Sit down and wait 15 minutes for the menus, another 15 to place a drink order, another 10 for the drinks to get there, another 10 to place food order. Now you finish the meal, good luck getting the waiters attention to bring the check. European dining is the worst, every time I am back stateside I feel like im being waited on in the white house or something fancy.
jamisteven··on I'm Eric Ries, author of "The Lean Startup" and new book "Incorruptible" – AMA
Your first book was my like my bible, used many of the concepts when building gomacro.ai, at the same time found it so easy to get sucked into non-lean methodology. Very hard these days to come up with a sound idea, so many people building things that nobody asked for to begin with and in the age of AI its even more so the case. Best of luck with the new one, will give it a read!

All that work and you could have just bought a white noise machine on amazon for 25 bucks and been done, why?!
jamisteven··on Accepting US car standards would risk European lives
"Yet, EU vehicle safety regulations have supported a 36% reduction in European road deaths since 2010. By contrast, road deaths in the US over the same period increased 30%, with pedestrian deaths up 80% and cyclist deaths up 50%." They seem to think that the two are correlated, they are definitely not. The US is like the wild west compared to the EU, especially as it pertains to traffic. Americans take laws as mere suggestions, where in Europe the law is the law and you follow the rules, especially in Germany / Austria / Switzerland. We also allow people to drive on the roads with super old, broke down, and unserviced cars with missing bumpers or things clearly falling off, like its no big deal. Again, they are grasping at straws suggesting their auto build quality has lowered their death rate while increasing ours, its ridiculous.

I would argue that it is importation, rather than exportation.
jamisteven··on Britain’s biggest skills problem is that many firms don’t value them
tbh I hate this approach of up-skilling / free trainings, all they are really after with this is squeezing every last bit of juice out of you so they can continue to consolidate job roles and make you do more with less, instead of hiring SME's for specific things, they have a jack of all trades working on an endless amount of items that use to require a team of 10+ people to do. Especially in tech roles.
jamisteven··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
..which is, quite accurate really.

jamisteven··on “How America took out the Nord Stream pipeline”
Its crazy that people prior to this thought this was some kind of conspiracy when it was so blatantly obvious who blew it up. Ask anyone working in commodities trading who blew it up, they all knew exactly who it was. The US had the most to gain and they even told us on 2 different occasions thats they would do it.
jamisteven··on Chinese surveillance balloon spotted over U.S., Pentagon says
Nonsense, they have been tracking this thing since before it hit US airspace, through Alaska and Canada, they know exactly where it is and can take it out at any time they want.

jamisteven··on Biotech CEO pays $2 million a year to decrease age by 5 years
I don’t believe it is. I’ve been on a similar regimen minus the metformin for some time and the supplements he takes and the formula followed is fairly well researched with dozens of bio hackers across the world doing similar. The metformin alone is known to reverse aging significantly. Even myself just taking Nicotinamide Ryboside I have noticed a massive difference in everything from skin complexion to eye site to energy levels and improved cognition.

This is one of those things that just drives people out of tech and leaves the ones still in it super frustrated. So many buzzwords and PR non-sense from non-tech mgmt.
jamisteven··on Ask HN: Where can I find a well paid junior Android Kotlin position?
The money for devs in Switzerland is in: 1. Electronic Trading - Java / C / Python 2. Pharma

If you are trying to optimize your take home pay, first stop is changing canton to one with lower income Tax ie: Zug, but would look into getting out of the Pigeon hold that is Android especially if you plan on staying in Switzerland.

jamisteven··on Hotel safety tips from a former intelligence officer
In 2010 I was working at a large hotel / convention center in Nashville, at about 8pm we were preparing for a massive event where a company had bought out one of the venues, the entire hotel was booked solid. In the days prior to this, we had torrential downpours and heavy rain but this was normal, until it wasnt. Out of nowhere we get reports that the underground tunnels in the hotel used for employees to get around were taking in water and it was quickly determined that the cumberland river had overflown after the army core of engineers put a damn down and could not get it back up. I cant begin to explain the chaos that ensued there with that many people and the hotel essentially being on a dead end. 3k guests, likely more than that in employees, all scattering to get to higher ground and out of a bottle neck. Hotel was safely evacuated but the entire place was underwater by the next day. That said, the "orientation" section in this article I think is absolutely necessary.
jamisteven··on FDA Authorizes Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech Bivalent Covid-19 Vaccines Booster Dose

jamisteven··on Sorry, your wife is Indian, landlord won’t rent to you
This. Having lived in Switzerland for the past four years I am shocked by this revelation, people think America is a super racist place, it doesnt hold a flame to other parts of the world, in fact its the opposite.
jamisteven··on Ask HN: Depressed, need to leave web development, what can I do?
1. Try to take 6m to a year off 2. Think of way to leverage your skillset to your advantage in a non 9-5 capacity 3. If its still repulsive, go on indeed and just start browsing with very little criteria to see what interests you and just start applying, you would be surprised how advantageous being a tech worker can be in other seemingly non-related industries. I know a guy who use to be a nurse, he is now a charter boat captain. Another that was a F1 Race mechanic that now works in Solar... Having design say, ability to think critically, to plan out and wire frame something up, are all transferrable!

Good luck

jamisteven··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
Apple would rather Android users feel isolated and thus pressured into adoption of a superior product than enhance iMessage to be RCS compatible. In Europe, people rarely use iMessage for group chats at all, WhatsApp / Telegram / Threema / Signal are defacto group chat apps for this very reason. People know iMessage is not multi-device friendly and no benefit to using it. I imagine this problem is nowhere near their list of actual problems worth looking at.
jamisteven··on Ask HN: I love programming but hate the industry. Can anyone relate?
There is no "programming industry". Industry would be, automotive, finance, agriculture.. etc. Its likely the industry you work in, not programming.
jamisteven··on DOE announces breakthrough in residential cold climate heat pump technology

jamisteven··on Day trader army loses all the money it made in meme-stock era
Hilarious how the MSM are blaming day traders when in fact what is really happening is an unparalleled liquidation of overleveraged funds like Melvin capital and co. Every single thing that the folks on r/superstonk, and r/wallstreetbets have mapped out months if not a year ago are now coming to fruition, even the blaming of retail for the collapse of an overbought and artificially stimulated market.
