jamisteven··on I'm a digital nomad. Should I renounce my US citizenship?
I am still in disbelief that there is no other solution around this, its absolutely insane. I live/work in Switzerland, wife is Swiss, child born here etc. In Switzerland you have higher than average salaries and that 112k is easily surpassed. So they US is basically telling me to stay poor, or abandon my citizenship.
jamisteven··on How I learned French in 12 months (2020)
such a french thing to bring about it too.
jamisteven··on Switzerland’s astonishingly polite armed conflict of 1847 (2019)
Having lived here for the past 3 years I would say that this was less about being polite and more about avoiding human interaction, which is something I find quite common in Swiss culture even today. Highly introverted and wanting to stick to ones self is the norm here. Villages so quiet you could hear a mouse fart.
jamisteven··on Ask HN: Is Burning Man Over?
Maybe checkout "WokeFest". Held virtually over zoom. Absolute rager.

jamisteven··on Edward Snowden Slams Sam Altman's Worldcoin: 'Don't Catalogue Eyeballs'

jamisteven··on Ask HN: A US programmer makes 3 times that of a EU programmer. Why?
Answer: 1. Because European programmers havent rallied together to demand more 2. Because if larger companies can offshore to places like Poland and save 20-50% in a long term labor play then they will and when 4-5 large companies employ 95% of the engineers in that city, they can define salary bands and keep them where they want 3. In the US, there is a bit of a disconnect on which jobs pay what, for example a social worker in the us makes like 35k USD per year, if you have a masters maybe 50k, compare that to Switzerland where they make like 75k without a masters. Or a hair stylist, lieklynot making very much money in Switzerland but in the US you can make a ton and they typically charge more in the big cities in the US than they do in European ones. At the end of the day its all supply and demand and what value the culture puts on things. 4. Basic supply and demand - lot more tech types in EU than in the US from what I have seen, larger labor pool drives salaries down

As an American engineer working in Switzerland I see this far too often, people wanting to come here from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic etc as the salaries there are crap, and really cant blame them. Germany for example, highest tax bracket is reached at like 50k and things arent that cheap relatively speaking. If it were me and I lived in any of those countries, I would be starting my own company or moving to a higher paying country immediately and working the majority of my career there, then retire somewhere cheap.

jamisteven··on How to rapidly improve at any programming language (2016)
This is precisely why I hate coding, even the articles about coding dont make sense to me.
jamisteven··on Italian towns will pay you to work remotely
exactly, looked into this heavily years ago and this is spot on. These towns will basically never turn into anything worth investing energy into and most have absent local governments.
jamisteven··on IKEA buys 11,000 acres of U.S. forest to keep it from being developed
This is laughable, they do this all the time in Romania just to chop down half the trees to build shitty bookshelves.
jamisteven··on [dead]
Clickbait title
jamisteven··on YouTube bans Steve Bannon's podcast channel
There is an all out war right now from big-tech on conservative everything. Ushering in authoritarianism like its 1984. Parler blocked by iOS app store and google play, AWS removing their servers from its platform, youTube banning Bannon's podcast. There are plenty of people, groups, and politicians, for example the ayatollah of Iran, chinese state media etc that should pose far more of a threat to the world than some conservatives, but that doesnt support the Liberal narrative so they get to stay. Welcome to dystopia.
jamisteven··on Pierre Cardin has died

jamisteven··on Post Mortem of Google Outage on 14 December 2020
thats one hell of a post mortem.
jamisteven··on Ramstein air base in Germany experiences potential incoming missile scare
This reminds me of when Hawaii had that "false alert" of an incoming nuclear missile and it was supposedly just a user error.

jamisteven··on A nameless hiker and the case the internet can’t crack
Question, in the first picture he is wearing a jacket with "BR" embroidered on left side, was that ever looked into if its not a brand name?

I just want to know one thing: What percentage of the world population actually uses Bitcoin?
jamisteven··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
by working there. I would say sure a lot of the platform is written in C, much of the architecture and front end market-making apps are written in C but when it comes to the algo's and tools to spin up new pricing models in a way that is fast, those tools are written in Java.
jamisteven··on We chose Java for our high-frequency trading application
Basically all robust HFT shops are using Java, python is great for prototyping but in the end too slow.
jamisteven··on Dropbox Converts to Permanent WFH
Or, their home is not a place of work, its a home. I dont want my home to be anywhere near my place of work, or anything like my place of work. There should be a clear segregation of these two places.
jamisteven··on Why so few people learn the hottest coding language in finance
I work in the industry and have not heard this, but curios as to what will be its replacement?
jamisteven··on Why so few people learn the hottest coding language in finance
Can confirm the gist of the article but I wouldnt say its the "hottest" coding language in finance. It is largely used in electronic trading for realtime and historical DB's that algo's interface with to determine pricing models. Also true that experienced KDB Devs and KDB DBA's are rare to come by.
jamisteven··on Looking at the experience of black Britons through an American lens
Even in the US it doesnt ring true to many, many people. And I am not just talking about privileged white people not seeing the point, the people spreading these PC views on everyone are a minority and are the same ones always playing the victim, bitching and complaining for one reason or another.
