jamies··on SvelteKit 3
Such a great project. I converted my React-enjoying cofounders to Svelte/SvelteKit worried they wouldn't like it, but they absolutely love it!

We use Svelte extensively at Orb.net for our website (duh), but also as a framework for our desktop and mobile apps. Wails serves our golang and SvelteKit/Svelte provide the UX. It's been tremendous for multiplatform productivity, and binaries are less than 20mb! Nothing like Electron!

jamies··on Elevators
Thanks for sharing this. I was just commenting about the challenge of making a fun elevator sim game. This looks great -- can't wait to play with it this weekend!
jamies··on Show HN: Elevators
This is absolute catnip to me. Fantastic job to the author! It really scratches the itch of wanting to understand elevator dispatch algos!

I want something similar for advanced sensor stop lights...

I've long toyed with creating an elevator simulator game, but every time I build a prototype I realize it's not that fun to manually dispatch elevators, and playing with algos only goes so far! Elevator Saga is great for the programming side: https://play.elevatorsaga.com/

jamies··on GloriousEggroll's Proton has been rebased on Proton 11
Valid point! For me, the FSR3 -> FSR4 was such a big boon of performance and graphics quality it made GE Proton (with the PROTON_FSR4_UPGRADE=1 flag) the easy choice for most games that supported FSR3. Luckily, it seems Valve has just added this to their Proton, too!
jamies··on GloriousEggroll's Proton has been rebased on Proton 11
For those curious, Proton is included with Steam, but GE's Proton includes many tweaks, improvements, and yes, rebasing on the latest upstream versions of many packages. For many games running in Linux GE Proton tends to be better than Valve's default Proton. GE Proton also includes features earlier than Valve, like FSR3 -> FSR4 upgrading, etc.

CachyOS makes also makes a Proton that's similar but different from GE's. There's also Valve's Proton betas, Proton Experimental (which is often updated within days of major releases).

ProtonDB.com is a great resource for finding out which "Proton" works best for a given game.

jamies··on Nix at work: FlakeHub Cache and private flakes
Please keep at it! Doing what GitHub did for Git is a real opportunity I think for Nix. We'll be keeping an eye on Determinate's work...
jamies··on Nix at work: FlakeHub Cache and private flakes
I appreciate someone from the project commenting here. I left Nix because it just has too many warts, and unfortunately, they've only increased over time, which is the opposite of what I expected.

- I'd update Nixpkgs, and my build would stop working. The logging was awful, so fixing it took hours.

- The mono repo sounds nice, but selective updates are almost impossible.

- Building our Go project in a Nix package was nearly impossible with private GitHub repos, so we moved on.

- Bash scripts never work because binaries are never where they should be in Linux.

I could go on, but my experience with Nix and NixOS left me with significant scars. I’m hopeful that someone will eventually create a more user-friendly deterministic OS.

jamies··on Amazon ordered a return to the office – but research says they'll backtrack
To me, these RTOs are nothing but silent layoffs. Their best and probably most expensive talent, who have the skills to land remote gigs, will depart. Amazon's smart enough to know this; I understand from friends who worked there they believe everyone is replaceable. I disagree.
jamies··on Teardown Engine Technical Dive [video]
This game is a lot of fun. Highly recommended if you like destructible environments and puzzle solving.
jamies··on I forked SteamOS for my living room PC
If you're interested in running SteamOS on a Linux PC, I'd recommend: https://github.com/HoloISO/holoiso
jamies··on Kagi – Sourcing from Brave Search, improved image search, and new Safari ext
It’s a bummer indeed, but more an issue of iOS not supporting 3rd party search engines without a wonky extension.
jamies··on NixOS has one fatal flaw
I totally agree. I love and hate Nix every day that I use it. I hope that someday they'll make it more user friendly, but I suspect it'll be someone else with a new approach.
jamies··on Dbrand Is Suing Casetify
The irony here is that Dbrand used to taunt Sony to sue them for making nearly identical, but black instead of white "fins" for the PlayStation 5.

I believe they had to end up changing the design in their 2nd iteration...

jamies··on Signal Public Username Testing (Staging Environment)
I have a similar address. I’m sure you can guess. It’s insane how much daily mail I get that isn’t for me. I get completed contracts, credit card statements, you name it.

One thing I occasionally do after a beer or two is reset someone’s password using my email address — just revenge in my opinion.

jamies··on Mister Rogers had a point – routinely greeting six neighbors maximizes wellbeing
Sometimes the creativity and passion of a child can just completely shake up the doldrums of being an adult! Thanks for sharing this.
jamies··on JetBrains Mono Typeface
This, and Roboto Mono, are my two desert island monospace typefaces. Are you allowed to have two desert island mono typefaces? I don't think I could could choose between them.
jamies··on Commit Mono – Neutral programming typeface
I found this on their FAQ: "There have been some problems with downloading .zip files from Safari. The download is tested to work in Chrome and FireFox."
jamies··on Capitol Hill's mystery soda machine
I used to go to this machine a lot in high school, and certainly drove past it a lot too; it was located pretty centrally in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle.

More than 20 years later I sent a close up photo to some old friends who immediately clocked it as “that” vending machine.

Simple curiosities like these make me happy.

jamies··on Show HN: I made an iOS HN app to navigate large threads without getting lost
One feature request please: add an option to open links immediately in Safari (which has my preferred web extensions installed).
jamies··on It’s time to embrace slow productivity (2022)
I love that you quoted “slow is smooth and smooth is fast” -- I learned it as a volunteer firefighter! It's a great saying, and can be applied to just about anything.
jamies··on NYC skyscrapers sit vacant
Plumbing is a big one. Most commercial floors only have a few hookups and drains. Each apartment typically has at least 6.

Building layout is another. You could only reasonably put apartments on the outside with windows. There would be a lot of wasted space in the core of the building.

It's all possible, but the question becomes is it desirable to live there? Will the rents justify the cost to convert? I doubt it...

jamies··on Intel One Mono Typeface
Looks like Frere-Jones collaborated on this. They have a ton of experience with readability and typefaces. Excited to try this out!
jamies··on Google employees complain about CEO's pay raise as cost cuts hit company
GitHub, Visual Studio Code, Copilot, Azure. Need I go on?
jamies··on DJI Mavic 3 Pro
Cool, yeah, just fly your drone next to wildlife and claim they don't mind.
jamies··on Paving the Road to Vulkan on Asahi Linux
Asahi Lina is truly an inspiration for open source reverse engineering. For those not aware, they also live stream their coding sessions quite often: https://www.youtube.com/@AsahiLina

I'm excited for the day that I can easily install SteamOS (the modern one that runs on the Steamdeck) on an M2 Mac mini for an insanely powered "Steam console" for my living room TV.

jamies··on Hertz to pay $168M to customers arrested due to Hertz’s false police reports
I have only rented with Hertz for about 20 years, and finally gave about after almost several bad experiences. Tried Enterprise on my first trip last week and was shocked at how much better it is.
jamies··on Starlink adds another 100Gbps connection to the SeattleIX
1yr plus PacNW user; this is likely adding needed backhaul for this high demand region.
jamies··on Does CloudFlare really speed up your site? Tests say not really.
Carson, I'm in the exact same boat as you and it's served us really well. I'm using CloudFlare only to cache my static assets for a Node.js app and I've seen performance in Heroku (and NodeJitsu) go up as a result. I've also added some subdomains to CloudFlare so I'm sharding my static assets (cdn1.mysitecdn.com, cdn2.mysitecdn.com). Add in that all of the assets are Gzipped and SSL secured and I'm a very happy camper. My app on 3 dynos can handle 1000+ concurrent users/sec no problem.
jamies··on Keyboard Shortcuts for Mac and Chrome
Also, hitting control-return in the omnibox will prepend "www" and append ".com". For example, you could type theoatmeal and hit control-return to be taken directly to www.theoatmeal.com.
