I presume you're using the Pro, not the Max.

Anyways, what ram config, and what model are you using?

jamesy0ung··on OpenAI Plots Charging $20k a Month for PhD-Level Agents
OpenAI is a financial black hole, burning cash faster than it can raise it, with a business model built on hype and a product (ChatGPT) that's easily commoditized. Their revenue projections are delusional, and the core API business is surprisingly weak, suggesting the entire generative AI market might be overblown.

What exactly does the Xeon do in this situation, is there a reason you couldn't use any other x86 processor?
jamesy0ung··on uBlock Origin forcefully disabled by Chrome
Is there a particular reason LibreWolf doesn't have automatic updates? It does seem a little inconvenient. I'm currently using Safari + AdGuard, which updates with the OS and from the App Store.
jamesy0ung··on uBlock Origin Forcefully Removed by Chrome
You can replace the ChromeOS bootloader with upstream Coreboot and use SeaBIOS or edk2 payloads to turn it into a generic x86 laptop and install Linux.

Mozilla literally chose the worst possible time to change the Firefox terms.

They could be scooping up disgruntled Chrome users, yet all they did was generate a load of negative noise.

jamesy0ung··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
To be fair, macOS isn't much better in this regard, the error codes can be quite cryptic, for example what is a -2003F.

For some reason, a game I play called DCS can be buggy and I've been told by the support to sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth. For some reason on every install of Windows 11 I've ever done, it always picks up tons of broken files. This is installing using the latest at the time Microsoft ISO. I've had this issue on multiple different systems, a modern gaming pc, a Mac with bootcamp, an older Lenovo M93p and when installing inside VMWare or KVM.

I do get less application and operating system crashes on a Mac though.

jamesy0ung··on Apple's Software Quality Crisis
The built-in bloatware (LinkedIn, TikTok, Clipchamp, etc.), the constant nagging (like full-screen reminders to buy Office 365 to "protect" your PC), Edge is basically forced on you. MSVC has insane licensing terms — you can’t use it outside of Visual Studio or VS Code, not to mention it's lacking support for C. Windows seems actively user and developer hostile.

Beyond that, Windows' architecture is a mess, I hate it (There's a reason Microsoft has to ship WSL2). macOS runs all of my tools fine, just like Linux does.

jamesy0ung··on About Google Chrome's "This extension may soon no longer be supported" (2024)
Orion looks pretty interesting, it's not like any of the other alternative browsers (opera, vivaldi, brave, arc etc) which just wrap Chromium in more junk. It uses WebKit which is optimised for Apple platforms, giving more battery life, while also integrating uBlock Origin.
jamesy0ung··on Show HN: Fast Transition from Firefox to Librewolf
Side note: Why does Mozilla pay their CEO $6.9 million as of 2022 [0] while seemingly mismanaging their business? As a Firefox user, Mozilla feels like a hollow company with little impact, existing primarily to give Google the appearance of competition. This seems like just another example of Mozilla sabotaging themselves.

Are you using anything new in iOS 17?

It would be nice to be able to run it on my iPhone which is stuck on 16.2 because of TrollStore and Dopamine

jamesy0ung··on Does iOS have sideloading yet?
I'm not quite buying the 'security' argument, all recent iPhones and iPads have hardware virtualisation capabilities. Apple can simply run the 'unsafe' applications in a virtual machine, and combine that with the existing protections built into the operating system (sandboxing, sptm) and it would be fine.

Thanks, all of the mini usb cables I've tried are fairly long (~1m). I'll try and find a short one and see if it fixes it.

ACL is fantastic, gotten my 2017 MacBook Pro 15" fixed multiple times for free even out of applecare, last time it was fixed, it was 6 years old. Had issues with the keyboard, and the screen. Seems to be a common issue with this model.

I have this exact one, and I don't reccomend using it with the Saleae Logic software, it constantly drops out and has issues enumerating. Haven't tried sigrock yet.

jamesy0ung··on Apple Comes Crawling Back to X Like a Dog
Apple has built a reputation for supporting progressive causes like (RED) for AIDS relief, LGBTQ+ rights, and racial equity, yet now they’re funding a platform rife with hate speech and extremism.

It's always interesting when I install Linux on a machine, and it can fit all running processes on a single page in top.
jamesy0ung··on The average CPU performance of PCs and notebooks fell for the first time
I love Linux and run it on my servers, but on the desktop, it requires too much tinkering—I often spend more time troubleshooting than working. Laptops are especially problematic, with issues like Wi-Fi, sleep, and battery life. Windows is a mess—I hate the ads, bloat, and lack of a Unix-like environment. WSL2 works but feels like a hack. macOS, on the other hand, gives me full compatibility with Unix tools while also running Office and Adobe apps. Also Command+C for copy, Command+V for paste is much nicer than Control+Shift+C and Control+Shift+V. macOS does have absolutely terrible screen snapping though in comparison to Windows 11. The hardware is solid—great screen, trackpad, speakers, and battery life. I considered getting a high-end PC laptop (based on Rtings’ recommendations), but every option had compromises, either a terrible screen, terrible processor or terrible battery life. By the time I configured it to a non crappy config, it would’ve cost more than a MacBook Pro 16.
jamesy0ung··on The average CPU performance of PCs and notebooks fell for the first time
The problem seems to be CPU bound, it's got 16GB of memory and memory pressure is low. The CPU is a i7-7820HQ, though I thought that it was interesting that my iPhone XR (Apple A12) scores higher on a synthetic benchmark than my top of the line MacBook Pro from the same time.
jamesy0ung··on The average CPU performance of PCs and notebooks fell for the first time
I'm just as surprised. Also, I was using Windows 11 LTSC 2024, not the standard version, which could impact the validity of my comparison.

> 1. Extra silicon area being used by NPUs and TPUs instead of extra performance?

I'm not an expert in silicon design, but I recall reading that there's a limit to how much power can be concentrated in a single package due to power density constraints, and that's why they are adding fluff instead of more cores.

>2. Passmark runs under Windows, which is probably using increasing overhead with newer versions?

This is a huge problem as well. I have a 2017 15" MacBook Pro and it's a decent computer, except it is horribly sluggish doing anything on it, even opening Finder. That is with a fresh install of macOS 13.7.1. If I install 10.13, it is snappy. If I bootcamp with Windows 11, it's actually quite snappy as well and I get 2 more hours of battery life somehow despite Windows in bootcamp not being able to control (power down) the dGPU like macOS can. Unfortunately I hate Windows, and Linux is very dodgy on this Mac.

jamesy0ung··on Work at the Mill: The story of Digital Equipment Corporation
It's interesting how we've come full circle. Some of the engineers who worked at DEC later worked at PA Semi and Apple after the acquisition, helping develop Apple Silicon. DEC's Alpha workstations running Unix were among the most powerful systems of their time, and now, decades later, Apple Silicon has brought us back to high-performance RISC Unix workstations — just with a different flavor of ARM instead of Alpha.
jamesy0ung··on To buy a Tesla Model 3, only to end up in hell
Tesla is super annoying as well since there aren't many body shops that they have approved to work on the car. Prepare to wait months. That's in Sydney AU, not sure about the US.
