jamestanderson··on Mark Shuttleworth sees increased demand for enterprise Ubuntu Linux desktop
Can anyone shed some light into why specifically AI developers prefer using Linux over MacOS? I realize the tradeoffs and preferences between Mac and Linux, but this article calls out AI devs specifically, and I wasn't sure the reason for that.
jamestanderson··on I write fake online reviews
This is the first I've heard of ReviewMeta, but I've been using Fakespot[0] for a couple years now and always reference it when buying on Amazon.

jamestanderson··on Cloudflare Registrar
Thanks Sam for the reply, I've been otherwise happy with Cloudflare services for several years. The support with this issue was very helpful.
jamestanderson··on Cloudflare Registrar
Same exact billing issue happened to me, except my domains had transferred successfully. I paid the renewal fee and was later charged again.
jamestanderson··on Cloudflare Registrar
I've moved some domains to Cloudflare Registrar not knowing this limitation. I asked them about it and the support person said they are targeting Q1 2019 for this feature. Now that we're approaching that date I'm not sure they'll hit that.

I've also had a billing issue with Cloudflare Registrar. I transferred two domains and paid the renewal fee, and two months later was charged for the same domains again. They've since issued a refund after I raised a support ticket (still waiting on that to hit my card), but the fact that it happened at all is worrying to me.

Granted I was in early access so I expected some things not to be polished yet, but these are pretty critical areas to get right as a registrar. And since my billing issue happened just last week I doubt that issue has been fixed with the general release.

So I'm going to hold off on transferring more domains until it matures, or just stick with Gandi.

Submitted a PR for the font size issue. Thanks for compiling a list!

I just hate the feeling that we're moving towards a world where you can't go anywhere without being sold something or having your thoughts manipulated by a carefully crafted advertising campaign. I can control to some extent what I see online, not so much in the "real world".
jamestanderson··on FastMail loses customers, faces calls to move over anti-encryption laws
I checked out Posteo and noticed on the sign-up page it does not allow certain symbols in passwords. I get the error message: "[password] is invalid (must have at least one lower case and one upper case letter as well as one number or symbol - diacritics and exotic symbols are not allowed)" Wonder why that is.
jamestanderson··on Ask HN: What is an example of a super simple SaaS that is profitable?
I've used them more than once and am very happy with their service.

Squatters do this kind of thing already, but they demand an exorbitant price or have some kind of opaque bidding process. Park.io at least introduces some consistency and trust in this process.

I'd much rather pay a small premium ($99 for the domain vs however much a particular registrar charges) to avoid that hassle and still get a great name I would never have gotten otherwise by scanning for pendingDelete domains.

Where can I get that rate? My 30-day pass is $121.
jamestanderson··on The intolerable rise of perfectionism
You got it right but here's a link[1] with that original story and also some commentary on how this all relates to software development.

jamestanderson··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
Well, a large part of what makes up Soylent is soy protein isolate. So there's that.

Fullscreen ad that I can't scroll down out of, then a modal that appears immediately after, covering up the page. Is this growth hacking nowadays?

They get their results from 400+ sources [1] [2]. Bing does happen to be one of them, though.

Would be great if you capitalized TRAC, as I first read this as the project management software of the same name.
jamestanderson··on Gitolite's domain was snatched up
That's really terrible. I hope they can get their domain back soon.

jamestanderson··on Major changes to Mandrill, must be tied to a MailChimp account
I haven't used Mandrill extensively so I don't exactly know how it compares, but I've had a lot of success with Mailgun. That said, I've heard great things about SendGrid as well.

jamestanderson··on AtomPair – Pair-programming plugin for Atom, now with multi-tab syncing
Thanks! duiker101 elsewhere in the thread posted the exact issue I was having! I'm not really sure how I'd go about helping to diagnose that.
jamestanderson··on AtomPair – Pair-programming plugin for Atom, now with multi-tab syncing
Really cool project. I tried this about a month ago and had some issues, but I'll have to give it a second look and see if those have been resolved.

Well it's died down significantly from its original release. It was very much like how OP's is right now.

jamestanderson··on Pebble Reveals Pebble Time Steel and a Smartstrap System
I'm a backer of the Pebble Time and received this announcement as a Kickstarter project update. In pebble's own words, they call it a smartstrap.

  Introducing Pebble smartstraps

We believe your smartwatch should help you accomplish more every day.

When we started Pebble, we opened up the platform and invited the software
developer community to build remarkable experiences for Pebblers everywhere.

Looking at all the amazing things our developers have created over the last 2 years,
we decided to open the platform once more...only this time, for hardware developers.

Have you ever wanted to go for a run without your phone and still track your speed
and distance? How about a Pebble watch with a battery life of more than a week?
What about a NFC chip for payments, keyless car remote, or a pollution sensor?

Rather than trying to shove every sensor and doohickey into the Pebble Time, we decided
to keep the watch simple and functional and give our incredible maker and developer community the opportunity to build from there.
Up until now, if you wanted it all you had to compromise…on battery life, size, design or feature set. Not anymore.

That’s why we created Pebble smartstraps. It’s simple: straps can now contain
electronics and sensors to interface directly with apps running on Pebble Time.
