jameslevy··on SXSW Cancelled Due to Coronavirus
Perhaps they will offer a choice between a voucher for next year's event, or some type of (partial) refund.
jameslevy··on 'Fear Factor' Is Running High as Currency Markets Resume Trading
What is the functional difference between a melt up and recovering? Don't they both imply an increase in asset prices with different reasonings? What would indicate one versus the other?
jameslevy··on Volkswagen exec admits full self-driving cars 'may never happen'
I think this type of "stress testing" of destroyed or modified signage would be an obvious direction for AV development once the basics are down. With HD mapping and other technology used to augment what is gathered by their sensors, AVs are eventually overall going to be better at handling unexpected scenarios at the road compared to humans
jameslevy··on Paypal Withdraws from Facebook's Libra Cryptocurrency
It does have some potential to act as a hedge against USD. It will probably produce some small amount of capital gains (or losses) for its users.
jameslevy··on Paypal Withdraws from Facebook's Libra Cryptocurrency
My understanding is that they are limiting the relationship between Facebook as a corporate entity and Libra, at least on paper. Whether regulators treat it this way is another matter.

But FB must be spending a lot on lobbying, and that should help them avoid any major surprises regarding enforcement actions.

jameslevy··on Snap Detailed Facebook’s Aggressive Tactics in ‘Project Voldemort’ Dossier
This is the main reason Netflix is included in the group, I think.
jameslevy··on Square wants to be a bank but not be taxed like one
Is there anything specific in Prop C to financial services companies? I thought the only criteria was making over $50M in revenue, and GMV would not be relevant to the calculation.
jameslevy··on Edward Snowden says he would like to return home
Not to tread too much into political territory, but if Warren or Sanders is the next US President I'd assume he will receive a full pardon.
jameslevy··on MoviePass will shut down for good on Sept. 14
You definitely can't write off a bad investment as a donation, but you can write it off as a capital loss.
jameslevy··on Photographing the Most Radioactive Places in Chernobyl
Fortunately, there were plenty of"human drones" available to assist with removing graphite.
jameslevy··on CutiePi – All-in-one Raspberry Pi tablet
I don't believe the CutiePi has a microphone, or speakers, AFAIK.
jameslevy··on Hiring Is Broken: What Do Developers Say About Technical Interviews?
Nervousness is also often an indicator that you may not feel fully prepared. The best way I find to relieve nervousness in these situations is to be so prepared that there's really no reason at all to be nervous.
jameslevy··on Coinbase: Responding to Firefox 0-days in the wild
For the average person, using Coinbase with 2FA is going to be better than managing their own private key. Even if their hot storage was penetrated, which is unlikely, they have insurance and other means of making sure that customer deposits are unaffected.
jameslevy··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
Why does it even matter how much they allocated? If I allocate $10 to pay my rent, that doesn't mean my rent check will need to be adjusted.

They need to allocate more, and if it puts them into bankruptcy (it won't), there are legal processes for handling their liabilities.

jameslevy··on Unity, now valued at $6B, raising up to $525M
Swift, Flutter, React, pretty much any development framework is also great at efficiently producing shovelware. That is to say, a platform for efficiently making things is going to be used to produce a lot of crap, as a rule.
jameslevy··on Tesla Q2 2019 Letter
Is there any public research or data regarding the value or predicted delta value of long tail "average person" driving data of this kind versus the kind of data captured by driving around the same small portions of SF or MV? I've looked around but haven't found anything. Granted, Tesla and its competitors don't have an incentive to publish this kind of data...but are they even in a position to be able to calculate it currently?
jameslevy··on “Why was Rust chosen for Libra?” in congressional hearing [video]
They're going to pass but encouraged him to circle back in six months.
jameslevy··on Elon Musk's Neuralink looks to begin outfitting human brains with faster I/O
The only fires that SpaceX needs to address are the actual ones, like at the launchpad explosion a couple months back.
jameslevy··on Despite High Hopes, Self-Driving Cars Are ‘Way in the Future’
Shouldn't it be possible to train for these scenarios using imitation learning and expert demonstrations? For example, Tesla seems to save replays of when its vehicles would have behaved significantly differently compared to how the driver actually behaved, and this data is supposed to be quite useful.

Is this type of crowdsourced driving data a crucial part of achieving Level 4+ self-driving? If so, it seems that driving around the same six city blocks of SF or cruising down Central Expressway in MV is going to produce diminishing returns in terms of producing measurable progress.

jameslevy··on Sia – Decentralized cloud storage network
I believe that censorship resistance is a key value proposition for decentralized file storage. So its agnostic handling of illegal content is a feature, not a bug.
jameslevy··on Qualified Small-Business Stock rule helps Silicon Valley workers save millions
The five year clock starts when you early exercise and file an 83b with a vesting schedule, or would the clock start only once the stock has vested?

I think it's the former, when you early exercise, but the language seems a bit confusing.

jameslevy··on How will movies, as we know them, survive the next ten years?
With the exception of tourists around Times Square, there are large areas of Manhattan that are the same way. Kids are sometimes seen but not too often.
jameslevy··on Facebook’s Cryptocurrency: Stop It Before It Starts
"But since Libra pegged is to a basket of currencies, it is not actually stable."

A weighted basket of the top 5 currencies by market capitalization should be more stable than the dollar.

The point about taxable income is true, although if I would rather pay tax on income I made from Libra than not had earned the income at all. Unless the dollar crashes hard I wouldn't expect this to be a meaningful amount of income.

jameslevy··on Lyft Takes over Ford GoBike
I would guess from my own experience as a frequent ride hailing passenger that Lyft/Uber drivers are less of a threat to cyclist safety on average than regular drivers.
jameslevy··on Cameras Came to the Newsroom
Unfortunately there is a good reason to believe that organizations like NYT could be targets. This should not be compared to, say, the Patriot Act.
jameslevy··on Federated Learning
Just because everyone gets the same model doesn't mean you can't have targeted ads. It just means the prediction model isn't modeled specific to your behavior. It can still make personalized predictions based on your search input, email content, etc.
jameslevy··on Can Uber ever make money?
Places like NYC already show this in practice.
jameslevy··on WeWork’s Annual Loss Doubles to Nearly $2B Amid Rapid Expansion
Uber has network effects. It's definitely possible and inevitable even that they won't be on top anymore at some point, but what they are doing is not exactly a commodity if it relies on a dense two-sided marketplace.
jameslevy··on Uber and Airbnb Alumni Fuel Tech’s Next Wave
Or just a less offensive acronym.
jameslevy··on Instacart and DoorDash’s Tip Policies Are Delivering Outrage
You don't see this for the YC startups that have become very mainstream. Reddit is mentioned on a front page HN headline right now (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19087558) without mention of its batch.
