jamesflorentino··on Ask HN: I am a good developer but have a serious gaming addiction
This is just my personal opinion but I'd take away gaming from my life if I were in your shoes. Actually, I WAS in your shoes once. I was addicted to gaming and would spend hours and hours in front of my laptop or xbox 360 trying to repeatedly do levels to get a good score. I was almost clinically obese until I realized I had to do something to improve myself for the future.

The thing of it is is that gaming doesn't really add value to my life as a developer/career person (unless you make money out of games). I have a serious case of addiction to whatever hobby I partake which is why I ditched gaming in favor of my new fitness endeavor.

Bodybuilding for me has immensely created a better psychological effect in terms of getting things done. In order to see results, you'll have to be patient and work smart (not hard) towards your goals. You can't just go to the gym and lift random weights and expect ground breaking results from a lack of planned training. You need to log everything including your meals, your training volume, and condition EACH day.

With that, I've incorporated those learning experience to my work. A business cannot grow if you have no plan to begin with. Questions like, in order for this thing to make "gains", what "training" methods should I look for? What "nutrition" will this need in order to fully maximize its potential?

Bodybuilding for me has become similar to how one would manage one's career or business. You take care of it, it takes care of you.

TLDR: Ditch gaming. Go fitness/bodybuilding.

jamesflorentino··on Kim Dotcom’s Mega goes online at Mega.co.nz
That's crazy. I had to open it up in TOR to see the actual site. Could it be my ISP?
jamesflorentino··on Kim Dotcom’s Mega goes online at Mega.co.nz
Am I the only here who's seeing "Domain Parked with Instra"?
jamesflorentino··on Amit’s Thoughts on Grids
I'm not exactly sure what's new on this page, but his articles about game design and path finding were huge help to me when I was starting out in game development.
jamesflorentino··on Show HN: gist.io, blogless writing for hackers
I think maruku would be a better alternative than markdown. Currently you cannot make a table of contents inside your gist. But overall, I find this extremely handy. Thanks for contributing this to the open source community.
jamesflorentino··on Apple ignores bug report
I think I was more interested in the iOS game demo in the video than the rant post itself. That was smooth as butter.
jamesflorentino··on Brackets: The Open Source Code Editor for the Web
Looks good but this wouldn't fit into the modern-day front-end developer workflow. I'm talking about companies who use pre-processors like SASS, LESS, Stylus, CoffeeScript, Jade, HAML, etc.

As for live code-editing feature, you can already do a lot of these stuff in Chrome's developer tool.

Note: I'm a Vim user. Which I personally think is still the best text/code editor in the world.

jamesflorentino··on [dead]
I'm quite saddened that certain people in HN have lost their sense of humor.
jamesflorentino··on Google buys Meebo
I honestly did not see that coming. I was a regular user of meebo way back in 2006-2008 but I don't have a solid recollection as to why I left (now using imo.im).

I can only assume that the acquisition has something to do with Google Plus. Well, whatever it is for, I wish them good luck.

jamesflorentino··on How to overcome “years of experience” requirements when applying for jobs
It does make sense though that companies might be looking for someone who has developed a sense of judgment over the years. Similar to how fathers (responsible ones) become less naive on decision-making as the family's dependency on him grow which is why we turn to him (or our mothers) for advise. Because they may be less skilled or knowledgable than us, but they've been around long enough to know how to react to difficult problems.

I think that is the most important aspect in achieving your goals in a company. You need effective decision making skills on top of your technical abilities.

jamesflorentino··on Elon Musk entrepreneurship lecture.
I think he meant that in terms of changing how the world sees and uses something.

Jobs wanted computers to be accessible for families and the general public and he was quite successful (iPhone alone is a huge success). Elon is trying to do the same but in the field of clean energy (tesla motors, solar city) and space travel.

But on another note, Elon musk is a whole different level. Because he knows the design and engineering aspect of his field and knows how to market it while still have the genuine intention of pushing humanity forward.

I think Elon Musk is a great role model for kids and future generation. As the old Internet saying goes "I think Elon is a pretty cool guy. He does rocket science and doesn't afraid of anything."

jamesflorentino··on Elon Musk and the future of spaceflight
The way mr. Musk voices his mind reminds me heavily of Steve jobs. Both wanting to change the world for the better. The only difference is that Elon is an engineer as well as an entrepreneur which makes him hard to dislike.

On a side note, I'm quite glad that this is getting a lot of press. Hopefully this buzz will create a demand for jobs related to space technology. I'm 27 but I wouldn't mind working for something related to that field once there is of high demand.

jamesflorentino··on On software communities, "Rock star" programmers, and... Linus
I can't imagine managing an open-source project as big as Linux. Therefore, I cannot judge Linus' way of voicing out his mind.

But if there is one advantage I see from the way he does it is that it drives careless and willfully ignorant people away from his project.

In my personal opinion, I think people are quickly judging Linus' personality based on some texts they see on their computer screen alone.

jamesflorentino··on Build the "USS Enterprise" in 20 years, for 1 trillion USD
This reminds me of those naive individuals wanting to develop games without knowledge whatsoever in the engineering and programming aspect of building one. Beat me up, scotty.
jamesflorentino··on Leap: A new gesture based interface for devices
This is gonna be a pain in the arm for photoshoppers. But i'm interested to see this technology grow into popularity. I can't believe we're actually having something like this in our time. 20 years ago, you can only see stuff like these in science fiction novels and movies.
jamesflorentino··on Plugable Thin Client: The $50 Computer
This looks great. I suppose this will help a lot of class rooms in poorer countries.
jamesflorentino··on Linus Torvalds won't do github pull requests
For people wondering why Linus said "You are a moron" to a particular user named "Joseph": The comment he was replying to was deleted. https://github.com/pirtlj

in one of his comment, "I did not realizes that Linus' shit does not stink. Thanks for clearing that up..."

Apparently, even if a comment gets deleted from a Github discussion, it still sticks to your public activity.

jamesflorentino··on We don't support Internet Explorer, and we're calling that a feature
Sadly a lot of folks are still stuck with Internet explorer. I still make it to a point to make my web app work at least in IE8 and above and make it seamless as possible.

What I would do is that I'd give users with old browsers a plain version of the site. E.g. No transitions, animations, etc.

Supporting Internet explorer is a pain in the back, but a good developer and designer will do his best to provide availability. That's what I learned so far in the past 6 months.

jamesflorentino··on Is it possible to become 'excellent' at both design and coding?
Hehe, I suppose that someone who's mastered the art of design is called a White(space) Knight. And someone who's mastered programming is called an Internet Sorcerer.
jamesflorentino··on Is it possible to become 'excellent' at both design and coding?
Unfortunately, there will always be a multi-classing penalty of sort. (I'm one of those people who code and design for web development, but masters neither.) For design, I've learned that the essential trait is to set one's mindset and philosophy on problem solving (as well as have an intrinsic taste for art). For code, I believe it is quite similar. Except that standards and practices constantly change. As a designer, it is your goal to meet and deliver these standards. Personally, I find it hard to be extremely good at both although I still consider myself competent.

My personal answer your question:

1. Some companies/start-ups value designers who have penchants for design while still being technically competent. e.g. someone who is familiar with grids, typography, art movements. While at the same time is familiar to version control, knows the basic structure of an app and the ability to build it single-handedly. Although I think that they serve a better role as project managers.

2. I have yet to witness one. If ever I meet one, I'd like to know how they were able to balance their daily information consumption.

jamesflorentino··on Ask HN: Are there any mature HTML5/canvas libraries?
I'm currently working on a browser based game and I found http://easeljs.com/ to be greatly useful.
jamesflorentino··on CoffeeScript 1.3.0 is out
Nice work! I just wanna share that CoffeeScript has been pretty helpful to me for rapid client-side JavaScript and NodeJS development. Much thanks to the Jeremy and the CoffeeScript team.
jamesflorentino··on Poll: What is your primary operating system
I've also been a Windows user for more than 10 years but just recently switched to OSX (May 2011) because I was migrating from Flash Development to HTML5/JavaScript. It seems that most of the tools for web development in general are more conveniently available in OSX.
jamesflorentino··on Show HN: JavaScript Instagram-like Filters
Try this one: https://gist.github.com/1747707

It basically uses the toDataURL() method to get the image data of the canvas.

jamesflorentino··on Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz
Heh. Correct. It does not equate to the mastery of being knowledgable in scientific facts. (Though it helps sometimes when dealing with irrational people.)

But I humbly think the most important aspect of being scientifically literate is that you solve problems using reason, factual data, and systematic methodologies.

jamesflorentino··on Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz
Also the fact that you needed to click EXACTLY on the radio button (wasting all that space that the td > input[type=radio] occupies) and that it doesn't show a cursor: pointer; when hovering on the (<) Previous and Next (>) buttons.

Funny quiz nonetheless. I'm an avid fan of Science (Astronomy, Astrophysics, Biology and Cosmology.), but I didn't get most of the questions right. /sigh

jamesflorentino··on Jaws: HTML5 Javascript game engine / development library
Thanks for the reply. I just checked Jaws' documentation, and it seems to be perfect for my little turn-based strategy game. I've had experience using EaselJS before but the problem is that I'll also need to build something on top of it to make it work as a game.
jamesflorentino··on Jaws: HTML5 Javascript game engine / development library
Looks nice! The code looks easy enough to get started. And I love the setup(); update(); draw(); game state methods. That's how I used to do it in ActionScript3 before.

I'm actually now diving into HTML5 game development as well and I was wondering what's the advantage of Jaws.js over Easel.js?

jamesflorentino··on How many of you tried kickstarter for raising money
Ditto. I don't live in the US too. I've been eyeing to crowdfund a personal project in indiegogo instead. But haven't really looked into how the process goes.
jamesflorentino··on Go Daddy No Longer Supports SOPA
I cannot trust a company who changes their philosophy based on how well it impacts their business.
