jamesdmiller··on Rapamycin, drug used in cancer therapy, emerges as powerful anti-aging remedy
I have been taking Rapamycin for 19 weeks and NR and Metformin (for anti-aging) for much longer and I can't see any difference. I'm 50+. I generally, however, feel excellent, as well as I remember when I was younger so long as I have gotten lots of sleep and don't have a cold. When I'm sick or tired I feel much worse than I did, however.

Thanks!

Hanson doesn't think (2) and (3) follow because of the possibility of panspermia. It's possible that our galaxy is the only one in a billion light years that has given rise to life, but there could, because of panspermia, skill be a high probability that a planet in our galaxy outside our solar system has life. See this podcast Hanson did with me: https://soundcloud.com/user-519115521
jamesdmiller··on The Inconsistency of Arithmetic (2011)
Children with hyperlexia can often learn to read before they are two. I personally knew a children who before the age of two was reading.
jamesdmiller··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
But if I travel for 45 years at 1-g doesn't the largest scale of the universe become significant to my travels?
jamesdmiller··on How far could a spaceship go if we never ran out of thrust? (2020)
Does the expansion of the universe reduce how much you have to slow down if you wish to land on a very distant planet?
jamesdmiller··on There Are Aliens, but Probably Not Here
Yes, if it's aliens or a 1 in 10,000 glitch it's the glitch. But if it's either aliens or three such independent glitches, it's likely aliens.
jamesdmiller··on HBO Max accidentally sent an integration email test to users
HBO should email everyone to give us all the choice of whether to get an apology email.
jamesdmiller··on No evidence UFOs are alien craft, unclassified US intelligence report to reveal
The ability to break the Enigma code might qualify. German scientists, I think, considered it unbreakable.
jamesdmiller··on Breaking the warp barrier for faster-than-light travel
I think because of the expansion of the universe, you don't have to decelerate as much if you travel to far away galaxies.
jamesdmiller··on The Uncensored Guide to ‘Oumuamua, Aliens, and That Harvard Astronomer
By this logic, the military would have started vaccinating their troops for COVID by March 2020.
jamesdmiller··on Larry King has died
Infinity makes decision making really weird since infinity + 1 is the same as infinity so if you are going to be tortured for infinity years it wouldn't be irrational to volunteer to be tortured for an extra year.
jamesdmiller··on Larry King has died
Let's say that across the multiverse all versions of you are going to collectively live for 1 billion years. Unfortunately, some versions of you will be tortured and let's assume that collectively you will be tortured for 10,000 years meaning that the measure your torture is 10,000 / 1 billion. But if you sign up for cryonics you most likely only get brought back in a world that has cured death and isn't evil. If many versions of you do sign up for cryonics say you live collectively for 2 billion years and are only tortured for 11,000 of these years so the measure of you being tortured is 11,000/ 2 billion.
jamesdmiller··on Larry King has died
Cryonics (I'm signed up with Alcor) can reduce the measure of you being tortured. Assume a multiverse where some versions of you are going to be tortured for a long time. If you sign up for cryonics, if you get brought back most likely you won't get tortured and so this might reduce the percent of you across the multiverse that is not being tortured.
jamesdmiller··on Ask HN: What happens next after a successful lockdown?
The endgame is to figure out the least cost sustainable measures of getting R0<1 until we have a vaccine or treatment safe enough for people in high risk groups to take.
jamesdmiller··on The Unparalleled Genius of John von Neumann
We must never forget him so we keep in mind that genius can be used in support of evil.
jamesdmiller··on Does the Amazon provide 20% of our oxygen?
Where do they put it? Wouldn't this require the total biomass of the rainforest to be continually increasing?
jamesdmiller··on Jeffrey Epstein: Financier 'found dead in cell' in New York
How common is it for a federal inmate on suicide watch to commit suicide? What's the Bayesian prior?
jamesdmiller··on Bicameralism (Psychology)
I can recall memories easily, but I don't see pictures of them.
jamesdmiller··on Bicameralism (Psychology)
I dream but don't daydream. Some with aphantasia say they don't seem imagines in their dreams.
jamesdmiller··on Bicameralism (Psychology)
Bicameralism seemed a lot sillier to me before I found out I had aphantasia (lack of a mind's eye), and most people see imaginary images while awake. Hearing the voices of imaginary gods doesn't seem all the different from seeing false images.
jamesdmiller··on Against Big Tech Viewpoint Discrimination
If it were legal, do you think that the power company should cut off electricity to Crowder?
jamesdmiller··on IQ is largely a pseudoscientific swindle
"IQ tests simply are not used at any scale that would be required to study such a correlation" I think you are wrong about this. There are a huge number of social scientists who study IQ. Also, IQ tests are very frequently given to children, and to everyone who wants to join the U.S. military.
jamesdmiller··on IQ is largely a pseudoscientific swindle
If you care about what college someone graduated from, you care about something highly correlated with IQ. Indeed, part of the reason why elite colleges are able to command such high prices is that, as you mention, we rarely use formal IQ tests when evaluating people and so graduating from an elite college is the best way that high IQ individuals can signal intelligence.
jamesdmiller··on IQ is largely a pseudoscientific swindle
"He only attacks people who are powerful enough to be able to handle it." He was attacking people who politely participated in that Twitter exchange including me, an obscure college professor. Yes, knowing Taleb I wouldn't have challenged him unless I was ready to be insulted, but still I very much doubt that he looked me up to see how powerful or emotionally stable I was.
jamesdmiller··on Exterminate Mosquitoes for the Sake of Humanity
I'm the author and I am completely serious. The part you mention is to foreshadow my arguing that Trump should pull the trigger.
jamesdmiller··on About This Googler's Manifesto
If a Google employee ever does get punched in the face by a fellow employee, he could use this line in a lawsuit alleging that Google has created a hostile workplace. A jury might not see this line as hyperbole. It was inconsiderate for this former senior Google employee to put his company in legal jeopardy.
jamesdmiller··on About This Googler's Manifesto
People have suggested that the manifesto's author is autistic. If this is true, then it is very possible that if you are not familiar with how autistics' think you will not be able to judge his mental state based on the emotional tone of his writing.
jamesdmiller··on Ask HN: Know of any non-digital toys/games that teach, for 6-10 year olds?
Meta-Forms teaches problem solving. You have to guess the arrangement of objects in a 3 by 3 grid based on clues such as two circles are next to each other, and no red objects are next to each other. https://smile.amazon.com/FoxMind-5512646-Metaforms-Games/dp/...
jamesdmiller··on Google Employee's Anti-Diversity Manifesto Goes 'Internally Viral'
This document will eventually be released if for no other reason then discovery in a lawsuit alleging Google has a hostile work environment.
