james_s_tayler··on Patrick Collison's Questions
The no rural vs urban divide thing...

I never ever thought about it before but I see _exactly_ what you mean. And I think you're spot on. There isn't this idea/phenomenon of country folks being very different than city folks, rather there is an extremely strong cultural narrative around how a Japanese person behaves and what it means to be Japanese that transcends the settings in which one lives. The cultural machine just continuously markets Japaneseness to it's citizens.

I agree it comes with good and bad, but for sure when it comes to safety and stability it's huge factor.

james_s_tayler··on Patrick Collison's Questions
Depends which end of society you're on.

My sister's in law are up early and on a train for hours into the city where they work until well after dark and are home at about 11pm.

My wife who lives in my home country on the other hand runs her own business from home, sets her own hours and has a lot more free time and independence.

I feel pretty sorry for the workforce in Japan. It's pretty dystopian if you ask me.

It's amazing for kids, university students, senior citizens and if you ever get a day off.

james_s_tayler··on Patrick Collison's Questions
It's almost 100% cultural I feel. At least Japanese people always attribute it to their culture and self concept of what Japanese do / how Japanese (and therefore themselves) behave.

If there are non-cultural factors I would think they contribute a fairly small amount.

But there's a light side and a dark side to the cultural factors. It has some seemingly unavoidable side effects.

Feels to me very much like a trade-off.

So perhaps it could produce convincing looking proofs that are ultimately nonsensical.

It could generate math problems and have students try them out. Might be a bit of fun.

james_s_tayler··on Plan the Sprint, Not the Project
What you actually need is pragmatism and not dogma.

I have a hard deadline external to the company by which time the project, and it is a project, needs to be done of else the company can't sign up new customers.

It would be pretty irresponsible of me to only focus on the next two weeks until it was done as I'd have no way of really knowing how close or far it is to completion, how we're tracking and if we need to make adjustments.

We did a rough plan. We worked to it. We evaluated how we were tracking and we shifted things in sprints around accordingly.

The benefit of agile is introducing short feedback loops that provide information you should be acting on.

Good project management also provides benefits.

Take the benefits from both, or leave one set of benefits on the table.

Well about 1/4 of the prison population has ADHD and half are dyslexic. Female prison populations also have a very high rate of BPD.

The grandmother's where you're from might benefit from learning about pervasive developmental disorders and the effects of trauma.

Some people are dealing with stuff that isn't their fault and that they never got adequate support for.

Ah... this. So much this.
james_s_tayler··on My kid can’t handle a virtual education, and neither can I
Ah, so the original comment is predicated on the assumption that all adults are capable of doing that for their kids.

Some are. Some aren't.

Same goes for the kids.

I suppose for developers you flip it right.

"Normal SV developers spend 4 to 5 hours a night coding on personal projects"

The normal people watching their TV would think those devs spend a ridiculous amount of time coding.

james_s_tayler··on Ask HN: How do you switch off from work, particularly when working from home?
During first lockdown I couldn't not switch off after work. I spent 300 hours gaming. I never play games. They don't hold my attention for more than 3 days.

During this second lockdown I can't switch out of work mode and into doing other things.

My brain just does what it wants and I'm only a passenger along for the ride.

james_s_tayler··on Dependency
Part of the skillset is evaluating dependencies on how well they fit with your goals both technical and strategic and what level of risk/benefit they pose, and how those dependencies are places in their respective ecosystem.

Usually any ecosystem has a core set of dependencies that are heavily relied on by most or a lot of projects as the go-to solution for a given problem. Then there are often sets of dependencies where there are several popular well maintained choices to pick from depending on your needs.

Where it gets a little trickier is things that are a bit more niche. That being said, most software development just wouldn't be possible without standing on the shoulders of giants so to speak cos it's just so time consuming.

They're far more of a benefit than a detriment but you have to learn to assess them and make choices based on your individual considerations.
