james33··on Valve's SteamVR solves big problems and poses bigger questions
It is funny seeing this concept beginning to gain legs. A buddy and I were working on a concept for VR/AR laser-tag style locations for a college entrepreneurship class about 5 years ago. However, every entrepreneur they brought in to critique our ideas flat out told us this was a moronic idea that could never work and that nobody would ever be interested in. We were told we had to change to a new idea or we'd fail the class. Oh, academics...
james33··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (March 2015)
GoldFire Studios - Oklahoma City - Full Time

We are a game studio focussed on building communities around games. We've built a web gaming platform with over 300,000 users and are now looking to expand both our own game offerings and open our platform to other developers. We've been around since 2008 and are profitable.

If you are interested in building the next generation of online games and gaming services, check us out at http://goldfirestudios.com/jobs.

james33··on Announcing MongoDB 3.0
I feel like the vast majority of people that bash on MongoDB didn't fully understand it and what it was good for when they tried it. We've been using it in production for nearly 3 years in online games and have had nothing but good experiences with it. This 3.0 release will be yet another big step forward and we are excited to reap the continued benefits.
james33··on Apple Reports Record First Quarter Results
Why wouldn't gaming be a key usage? On iPhone alone it is a multi-billion dollar industry. I think gaming could be one of the big driving forces moving forward once they get serious about Apple TV. Give it a few years for the processing to catch up to today's consoles and you no longer need an Xbox/Playstation.
james33··on SpaceX Sells 10% Stake to Google, Fidelity for $1B
I feel like in the long run this could be one of Google's best investments to date.
james33··on Io.js 1.0.0
I think it is probably too soon to answer that question since this is the first release available for devs to start playing around with.
james33··on Show HN: Crapify, a proxy for simulating slow, spotty HTTP connections
Unfortunately ipfw has been removed in Yosemite. Fortunately, there is something similar built into Chrome dev tools now.
james33··on If Sony Hack Wanted to Stop 'The Interview' Release, It Worked
It is really sad what kind of precedent this is setting. Hollywood is already too risk-averse as it is, and now it is going to get even worse.
james33··on Light Table 0.7.0
Well this is a pleasant surprise. I was rather disappointed by the last announcement as I felt Light Table was a nice start and was heading in a great direction. As one of the KS backers, I'm glad to see the effort was put in to make it easy for the community to keep it going.
james33··on AWS Lambda
It sounds like this is essentially what Joyent's Manta is, which we've been using in production for the last year and have found to be absolutely fantastic. Are there differences that I'm not seeing?
james33··on Txt – A canvas font and typesetting engine
This is pretty great! We've put a lot of work into text for our HTML5 game development, yet our canvas-rendered text is still quite limited in functionality. Using a library like this is going to save us loads of time and really open things up for us.
james33··on SmartDataCenter and Manta are now open source
We are heavily using it in production on http://casinorpg.com (not a common use-case, but it works well for us). Basically, when a player creates a new character, they are able to customize out of millions of unique possibilities. Since the game is HTML5, we must generate a unique PNG sprite for their character. We run Manta jobs to do this by generating the image, compressing it and then storing it directly in Manta (where it then gets picked up by a CDN).
james33··on Lime Text: Open Source Sublime Text clone
Isn't Atom the open source Sublime Text clone?
james33··on Audio Tour App Detour Steers You Away from the Typical Tourist Traps
The one we used was called "Road to Hana GPS Driving Tour," but it looks like there's a long list of them under the GPS Tour Guide name.
james33··on Audio Tour App Detour Steers You Away from the Typical Tourist Traps
My wife and I used an app similar to this on our honeymoon in Hawaii. We had the option of paying $300 for a guided tour, or paying $5 for an app and going our own pace. The app made that day one of the highlights of the trip.
james33··on If It Prints, It Ships: 3D Printing and the Postal Service [pdf]
The postal service should be worried about 3D printing. Once mainstream home usage becomes commonplace, you would think shipping volume could drop substantially as people begin to buy things online that then instantly print without a need for shipping at all.
james33··on Show HN: Steady – Shoot Cinematic Videos
How does this compare to Luma? I've been using that app for a few years now and it has been great, though it doesn't work well in low light.
james33··on Google Analytics iOS app
Somewhat frustrating that searching for "Google Analytics" on the iOS store doesn't return this app until #13.
james33··on Food Delivery Startup Caviar In Talks To Be Acquired By Square
That's a good point, but Square and Stripe aren't really competitors, so I'm not sure what the opportunity is for Stripe (unless you are suggesting they launch a card reader).
james33··on Introducing a simpler, faster GitHub for Mac
You can use this tool for any repo, not just GitHub repos. We have a mixture of non-GitHub and GitHub hosted repos that I manage all within GitHub for Mac. When they first released this I was actually using Beanstalk, but still used the GitHub for Mac application to manage those repos as well.
james33··on Introducing a simpler, faster GitHub for Mac
This is one of around 4 or 5 applications that I have open 100% of the time on my Mac. I still use the command line for some things, but for the most part I've saved massive amounts of time (and prevented a lot of bugs thanks to the visual code diff view) thanks to GitHub for Mac.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Solid green background? I'd be really curious to know what page you are talking about as I can't think of any page or screen that is solid green besides the felt on the poker/blackjack tables.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
This is an MMO, it requires registration, but we display information, screenshots and video about the game on the main page. This link is also the guest view, which lets you see inside one of the casinos live without needing to be logged in.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Sorry you had to go through all of those hoops, had never seen that issue or had it reported before. I think I've found the problem and fixed it now anyway. Our early player flow certainly has some issues that we are putting a lot of work into redoing right now (mainly it takes too long to get into the meat of the game). If you don't enjoy casino games then true, you probably wouldn't enjoy the early gameplay. Thanks for the feedback, we really appreciate it!
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Thanks, looks like there's an error in the guest view from a recent update, should have the updated soon. As to the looping you are referring to, that one is stumping me at the moment as none of us here are able to get that behavior to happen. Still digging...

Edit: Okay, the bug with clicking on things not working is fixed, still haven't been able to reproduce this looping issue.

james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Hmm, not seeing the looping issue you are referring to in Firefox. The game is an MMO, so we need some way to keep track of your player and sync with everyone else.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
What version of Firefox? The game works on every browser newer than IE8. As long as there is HTML5 Canvas it should work. That being said, Firefox does tend to have the worst performance of all of the major browsers.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
We don't really have a good solution so far. We mainly try to avoid the network tab, but if we must use it, we pause the game to free up some extra resources and generally it won't crash.
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Ha, I guess I could have phrased the title a little differently. That would be fun though too!
james33··on Show HN: Massively Multiplayer HTML5, Node.js, MongoDB Game
Interesting, haven't heard a report of that before. Looks like you got automatically cleared out of that table now though.
