james33··on The oldest bar in every state
Eischen's is a favorite among locals around Oklahoma City. Not for the bar but for the whole fried chickens you can get there. It's definitely worth a visit!
james33··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
I have to have a laptop with how I work, unfortunately. And yeah, I really need more RAM and particularly GPU power, so the M5 Max would have been a very big improvement for my workflow.
james33··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
I feel sick to my stomach. Been saving up all year for a new 16" M5 Max to replace my M1 Max in July (I do indie game dev, so I routinely use everything it can give). It was already a was already a big stretch at $6k, now it's completely out of reach at $8k. There's no world where I can justify that price even if I could afford it.
james33··on GitHub Git Operations Are Down
All checkmarks just turned green and my push went through. Snow day over.
james33··on What has changed in CPU cores in M3 chips?
Game engines can be pretty hefty (especially the big 3D ones like Unity or Unreal), you can always find benefit from faster CPU/GPU/RAM with this type of dev work. This is the only reason I'm tempted to upgrade my M1 Max.
james33··on OpenAI's chaos does not add up
The weight of the combined egos collapsed in on themselves creating the black hole that is now OpenAI.
james33··on Show HN: Use an old tablet as an extra monitor
It seems to be pretty stable now. I've been using an iPad Pro as a 2nd monitor for a MBP while working remotely over the last year without any issues (8+ hours of daily use).
james33··on Terraria developer bashes Unity, donates $200k to open source alternatives
Yes, but that list becomes much shorter when you're making 3D games.
james33··on Google is shutting down Stadia
Not surprised, but still rather frustrated. We literally just signed a deal to bring Arctic Awakening to Stadia in the last few weeks, and I know a number of other devs had done the same. They never even gave it a chance. What did they expect, to take over the gaming market in a few short years with hardly any content?
james33··on macOS Monterey
How's it been? I'd still been holding out, but I've been thinking about finally moving up to Big Sur this week.
james33··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
They did that to compare against the last comparable Intel chips in a Mac, which seems rather useful for people looking to upgrade from that line of Mac.
james33··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
From what I can tell, the charging brick is the same either way. The new MagSafe is just a different USB-C cable that has the MagSafe connector on the end.
james33··on DigitalOcean Down?
Looks like a widespread outage. We have servers in multiple regions that are all down and we can't even get into the DO dashboard.
james33··on DigitalOcean VPC
This is precisely why we switched from AWS to DigitalOcean. This cut out monthly hosting costs by 80% and vastly simplified our entire setup. We also saw some solid performance gains in some areas (wrote up our benchmarks: https://goldfirestudios.com/blog/150/Benchmarking-AWS-Digita...).
james33··on French court rules Steam games must be able to be resold
I don't agree with your first point. There are many great single player games that only take 1.5-2 hours to play through and don't really need to be played again as they are mostly linear experiences. Playing through the entire game, getting your enjoyment out of it and then getting a full refund isn't fair at all.

james33··on How Untitled Goose Game became a real video game
Interesting, I thought the writing and voice acting were its strongest elements (in addition to the beautiful scenery). The world would be boring if everyone had the same opinion though :)
james33··on Benchmarking AWS, DigitalOcean, Linode, Packet, and Vultr
The point of this test wasn't to determine the absolute limits. It was to determine what the actual real-world performance would be on the instances/servers we would actually be using.
james33··on Benchmarking AWS, DigitalOcean, Linode, Packet, and Vultr
If you would read the paragraph directly after the list of instances tested you would see this was directly addressed. This test wasn't meant to mislead and was simply exploring the best options for us. This isn't the same for everyone, which is why we open-sourced the tool we made so that you can run your own tests as well.
james33··on Mastercard will stop free trials from automatically billing once they're over
If this was on iOS then this is explicitly in Apple's guidelines not something that CBS mandated. The guidelines say that any remaining time on a free trial must end immediately if canceled early.
james33··on Tulsa Remote
And when did you make this move? OKC has been undergoing a renascence of sorts over the last decade and barely resembles the rest of the state. The tech scene is really taking off and diversity is expanding rather rapidly. There are a lot of great people working hard to make a difference here and just because you like one place over another doesn't mean that other place has to be bad, it is fine to just be different.
james33··on Howler.js – JavaScript audio library for the modern web
It definitely works on IE11 and Edge. If your computer is blocking the Audio tag then no it won't work in IE11 as there is no Web Audio, but Edge should work unless Web Audio is getting blocked as well.
james33··on Howler.js – JavaScript audio library for the modern web
FYI, if you've built something with howler.js and want to add it to our showcase (https://howlerjs.com/showcase/), simply go to https://github.com/goldfire/howlerjs.com#contributing and open a PR with your site added.
james33··on Howler.js – JavaScript audio library for the modern web
We've been making steady improvements since 2.0 as you can see in the changelog: https://github.com/goldfire/howler.js/releases. Once I get a little more free time, I'm planning on adding and merging in some exciting new plugins and adding some highly requested features for the 2.1 and 2.2 releases (hopefully before the end of the year).
james33··on Howler.js – JavaScript audio library for the modern web
Yeah, I've been meaning to make a better spatial audio demo, I've just been swamped lately. The capabilities of the spatial audio are actually pretty impressive with Web Audio (and thus in howler as well).
james33··on Digital Ocean Managed Databases
We've been slowly moving from AWS to DO over the last 6 months due to cost, performance and ease of use. We haven't had any issues and the support has been far superior as well. We wrote up a benchmarking comparison with some reasoning behind the switch: https://goldfirestudios.com/blog/150/Benchmarking-AWS-Digita....
james33··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
Not every web page is "just" a web page. It is perfectly legitimate to have 1-2MB of JS on a page if that page is a full game for example.
james33··on Benchmarks Comparing AWS, DigitalOcean, Linode, Packet and Vultr
I did point this out in the results and why I was mainly looking for consistency rather than top-line speed.
james33··on Show HN: The Curious Expedition – A Steam game in HTML5
Exciting to see so many HTML5 games popping up on Steam and elsewhere the last few years. Here's another one that was built using Isogenic Engine/Electron and is also playable on the web, iOS, Android and Windows Store.

james33··on GitHub down
Is it just me or is the new GitHub Status page a joke? It used to show historical charts for uptime and latency for each of the different services, which was actually useful. Now it is just a daily messages list.
