james2vegas··on Show HN: A visual HTML5 animation editor in your browser
Logo looks a btit like Duke: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Wave.svg
james2vegas··on The worst thing about CoffeeScript
It is funny to see Python in an example of 'good' variable scoping. How exactly would you refer to the outer 'a' in that python example?
james2vegas··on A Public Statement Regarding Ubiquitous Encryption on the XMPP Network
Yeah, the list seems impressive until you assemble a list of non-signatories.
james2vegas··on Etoile: a GNUStep-based Linux GUI written in Objective-C
Doesn't appear to be Linux only at all.
james2vegas··on Google supports MariaDB
Maybe they can fix MariaDB to use something other than ucontext (which is no longer part of POSIX) or i386/x86-64 only asssembly for co-routines.

But they probably won't since this is Google, and it "works just fine on Linux"

james2vegas··on Toybox, a Busybox alternative with a BSD license
Funny how this project with the BSD license is so anti-BSD (yeah, BSD users are 'busybox-envious', amongst other things). Fails to notice the presence of a large number of BSD-licensed userland tools, in the BSDs, while denigrating as many similar projects as possible (linking to inaccurate, flame-bait anti-Perl articles as a bonus).
james2vegas··on Byte magazine archives
Now, where's the UnixWorld archive?
james2vegas··on Show HN: Read RFCs from your command line with rfc
$ checkbashisms ./rfc possible bashism in ./rfc line 74 (should be 'b = a'): if [ "$COMMIT" == "$new_commit" ]; then

$ checkbashisms install.sh possible bashism in install.sh line 3 ('function' is useless): function __install_rfc() { possible bashism in install.sh line 49 (unsafe echo with backslash): echo "\n# Added by 'rfc' installer\nexport PATH=\$PATH:\$HOME/bin" \

but above and beyond that, it requires GNU grep (uses GNU extension --excludes) to run the script itself

james2vegas··on Perl Startups: Lacuna Expanse
a bit off topic, i really wish Perl CMSes would stop dropping Postgres support in favour of a MySQL only strategy (Movable Type and WebGUI [Plain Black], this means you). You'd think DBI did not exist or that this was really PHP.
james2vegas··on Schema liberation with JSON and plv8 (and Postgres)
"And, developer-friendly features make it incredibly easy to transform your existing, normalized schemas into liberated JSON ones!" Ugh

I love PostgreSQL, but now it seems infected with a strain of this NoSQL bullsh!t. The quote from the MongoDB documentation is telling, because it is junk, as is this 'liberation' of schema. PostgreSQL is sufficiently flexible and powerful to not need this abrogation of proper design to succeed, except in some imagined competition with 'noSQL' solutions.

james2vegas··on Developing database-driven web applications with Chicken Scheme
What about other web servers that have FastCGI support?
james2vegas··on Is Shelly Cloud faster than Heroku?
Doesn't matter, only supports Ruby on Rails.

Might care when it supports stuff I actually use, like Heroku does.

james2vegas··on Ask HN: Modern stacks and frameworks for fast web app development?
It is possible to substitute Pg, since it has PL/v8 and JSON types, so the 'one language for the whole stack' is satisfied.
james2vegas··on Barnes & Noble Puts Google’s Play Store and Apps on the Nook
Pity I nooted my tablet last month, as soon as it had gone out of warranty.
james2vegas··on Etckeeper lets you store changes in /etc to git
Been doing this with RCS for decades.
james2vegas··on If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It: Ancient Computers in Use Today
If it looked vaguely like NT with a Windows 95 look, it probably was NT 4, as 3.51 only had the Windows 95 shell with the Shell Technology Preview, otherwise it ran Program Manager/File Manager.
james2vegas··on The most useful thing in bash
Or just use vi mode 'set -o vi' in sh, 'set editing-mode vi' in ~/.inputrc for bash and other readline clients.
james2vegas··on Exposed Webcam Viewer
s/KDE/CDE/ ?
james2vegas··on The Sed FAQ
Perl regexes are PCRE-like, PCRE regexes are Perl-like, they are not the same.
james2vegas··on Client-side JS MV* Framework Roundup
That definitely seems to be the way people are defining it these days, sadly.
james2vegas··on Egypt catches divers cutting Internet cable amid disruptions
Most South African ISPs do that already, you just noticed it less. They stick transparent caching proxies in front of HTTP[s]/FTP
james2vegas··on Meteor gets SQL support
Not quite, it got MySQL support.
james2vegas··on Unix tricks
'set -o vi' is more likely to something that isn't bound up tight with readline, like /bin/sh
james2vegas··on An Ancient Piece of Computer Lore in a Place You’d Never Expect
s/cassette/floppy disk/
james2vegas··on Getting weather via your command line
weatherspect: http://robobunny.com/projects/weatherspect/html/
james2vegas··on Postgres 9.2 highlight: JSON data type
Or you could have used a domain with a validator written in PL/somelanguage as constraint
james2vegas··on Perl Regex Removed From Grep in Mountain Lion
Yes it should have. You could still run into problems as PCRE regexes are not quite the same as Perl regexes. Why not just check for and use pcregrep?
james2vegas··on Perl Regex Removed From Grep in Mountain Lion
Yeah, just use pcregrep
james2vegas··on Lisp-like html as a replacement to bbcode/markup/textile
Which is, of course, just CGI.pm's html functions again.
james2vegas··on Show HN: A fix for the .bash_profile .bashrc .profile madness
bash is the problem, the solution to this madness is to not use bash.
