jakobgreenfeld··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2024)
Sales.co | Account Executive | Full-time | fully remote

We're a tech-enabled, data-driven lead generation agency that helps startups and SaaS companies through fully managed cold email campaigns + strategy. We are serious about automating all the boring stuff so our team can focus on tasks that require expertise and creativity. Cold email is lindy but at the same time the landscape is changing rapidly. We're investing heavily into making sure we're always ahead of the curve.

- As an account executive, you're responsible for managing client relationships, develop their cold email strategy with us, implement learnings week over week.

- Experience with running cold email campaigns at scale, copywriting, and managing client relationships is a plus but not required.

- No micro management.

- Plenty of room to experiment and test your own ideas.

- We're not looking for a cog in the machine but someone with an bias for action, who is able to think on their feet and work independently.

jakobgreenfeld··on Ask HN: Why did medium.com "fail"?
Management by metrics is what leads companies astray. [1]

Right now it’s happening on Twitter and the process has just started on Substack.

jakobgreenfeld··on Ask HN: Where are all the parties?
Definitely a downward trend visible on Google Trends for e.g. "housewarming party":

What exactly are these guys getting out of it?
jakobgreenfeld··on AirPods' Dirty Secret
maybe it's just me but it seems like an introduction is missing. Not sure what the secret you're talking about is.

jakobgreenfeld··on Show HN: I built a service to discover rapidly growing startups, topics and apps
Hey everyone, Jakob here the creator. As a bootstrapped founder, I'm always looking for emerging trends since I definitely don't have the budget to create demand from scratch. So I built Under the Radar, a simple tool that automatically surfaces interesting new trends.

The raw input comes from hundreds of sources. For example, niche communities like certain subreddits and Hacker News are famous for recognizing trends long before they hit the mainstream. Similarly there are hundreds of awesome newsletters that cover specific niches and do a great job helping their readers stay ahead of the curve. But it's an extremely time-consuming task to keep up with all the chatter. So I wrote a script that automatically parses the conversations going on and extracts the most interesting keywords. These keywords are then enriched using data from Google Trends and the Google Keyword Planner. All rapidly growing keywords then end up in the database (Google Sheets!) where they're manually checked. Curated trends are shown on the site, together with a short explanation.

The backend and frontend code is all written in Python. For the frontend I'm using Flask.

Let me know if you have any questions, and any feedback is much appreciated!

What could be a good alternative?
jakobgreenfeld··on Effortless personal productivity (or how I learned to love my monkey mind)
Agreed. There are definitely programming tasks that work really well in Robot mode.
jakobgreenfeld··on Ask HN: Is there a functioning alternative to Symbolhound.com?
Symbolhound was a search engine that doesn't ignore special characters. This means you can easily search for symbols like &, %, and code snippets. Unfortunately it's no longer working.

Is there any alterantive that's still functioning?

jakobgreenfeld··on Open Source Airtable Alternative
Is there something similar purely for the frontend? Say I just want that users can explore a given dataset in an Airtable-like interface, whereas I don't need any fancy tools on the backend.
jakobgreenfeld··on Ask HN: What is the biggest untapped opportunity for startups?
Shopify for SaaS [1]

jakobgreenfeld··on Why is there no Shopify for SaaS?
Thank you!
jakobgreenfeld··on Why is there no Shopify for SaaS?
How do you handle authentication? And VAT taxes?

One of my point I'm trying to make is that everyone seems to be duct-taping services like this together.

jakobgreenfeld··on Build a Business, Not an Audience
I'm the author and wondering if you read the post beyond the headline.

Quotes from the text:

> "But don’t get me wrong. Having an audience is awesome and I love great content."

> "Publishing content online is the best way to become visible so that opportunities can find you."

My point is that churning out content by remixing other people's work for the sake of building an audience is a common procrastination trap. I love when people share first-hand learnings and with my most recent posts, including this one, I'm trying to do just that.

Another quote:

> "Your main priority always should be to do meaningful things, to solve real-world problems, to be the man in the arena. And if you share what you learn along the way, people will start to listen. Write when you have something meaningful to say, and not to stick to some self-imposed writing schedule."

jakobgreenfeld··on Still alive
From my personal experience this is 100% true.

If you have time to write blog posts, you're obviously not serious enough about your research. That's the general sentiment.

jakobgreenfeld··on Management by metrics leads us astray
That's a perfect way to phrase it. Thanks!
jakobgreenfeld··on Management by metrics leads us astray
Thanks for the feedback. Just changed the first sentence.
jakobgreenfeld··on A Grand Unified Theory of Product Ideation
This was something that stuck out to me like a sore thumb when I proofread the article. After all, the whole point is to highlight the various product ideation approaches, not just Paul Graham's favorite approach. But it's just that Graham is so damn quotable.
jakobgreenfeld··on Show HN: A Product Idea Prompt Generator
No, it’s a boring Python script that uses a set number of templates and variables that get swapped in.
jakobgreenfeld··on A Grand Unified Theory of Product Ideation
I’m the author and I can answer your question with a clear: no. (Not yet!)

I’m currently in the middle of a learning experiment and wrote the article to get some clarity in my own thinking. One part of the experiment is that I want to learn how to come up with great product ideas. I spend the last few weeks reading everything I can about the topic and the article is the result of this deep dive.

There’s no strategy in the article that I came up with myself. They are all from people who have built something substantial themselves. This is explicitly shown in the image at the beginning. All I’ve done is synthesize their thoughts and put them in a coherent context.

jakobgreenfeld··on Show HN: A Product Idea Prompt Generator
Yes, that’s exactly the approach.
jakobgreenfeld··on Show HN: A Product Idea Prompt Generator
To avoid any issues during the launch, I created a static version of the page. This means, the tool currently only uses a list of 300 pre-generated prompts. During the next few days I will switch back to the algorithm. But even then it’s not rocket science. It’s a simple (Python) algorithm. There’s no AI involved etc.
jakobgreenfeld··on SimpleSubmitter: Submit your startup to relevant directories
what directories do you submit to? I wasn't able to find a list on your site.
jakobgreenfeld··on I recorded vlogs to show how I built side projects
Just go back to using PHP (or sth similar like Rails or Django).

Serverless, everything-in-javascript, jamstack etc. are fads that are currently overhyped. (There are of course use-cases where they make sense. But for most project having a normal backend is clearly superior and much simpler.)
