jakob223··on 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning
Not when moving at any significant speed - most of the sound of a vehicle going faster than 10mph ish is tires.
jakob223··on FragAttacks: new security vulnerabilities that affect wi-fi devices
As far as I can tell Apple has not released an update for my Airport Express since 2018 :/
jakob223··on The Problem with Palm Oil
It's on everyone. But our political and economic systems don't encourage the producers to care about the ethics of their products unless the consumers care.
jakob223··on AI Clones Your Voice After Listening for 5 Seconds (2018)
The emphasis on a lot of these sentences is all wrong; I wouldn't want to listen to an audiobook by this engine. It's still super impressive/terrifying though.
jakob223··on A Landmark Climate Trial Turns on Whether Exxon Cooked the Books
If Exxon and all the other fossil fuel companies had not spent large sums of money to suppress climate research, perhaps we would have started moving away from fossil fuels and become concerned about climate change sooner, or be more concerned about the impending climate catastrophe.
jakob223··on Beyond Meat and KFC partner to test fried plant-based ‘chicken’
I imagine that that difference is going mostly to recoup R&D costs at e.g. Impossible right now, who is making the patties.
jakob223··on Pineapple Day: How I Started a Global Holiday
Pineapples are fun! I for one appreciate the encouragement to purchase fruit more often
jakob223··on Algorithm allows video editors to modify talking-head videos as if editing text
Most of the examples in the video they had the subject record the audio separately from the generated video. In one or two of them they cite some audio-generating thing.
jakob223··on I Obtained Satoshi's Treasure Keys 1, 2, and 3 in Minutes
The flavor text provided by the organizers made it sound like they intended there to be an easier solution - that way you only need to visit a location in one of North America, Europe, or Asia to solve the first three keys.
jakob223··on I Obtained Satoshi's Treasure Keys 1, 2, and 3 in Minutes
The later keys are expected to be harder, so if someone is able to get 400 of them total, it would be very surprising if they were stuck on one of these first three.
jakob223··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
Dropbox does an AJAX request when you enter your username, and it's fast enough that when you get to the password field it's already greyed out if you use SSO.
jakob223··on Lyft lobbying to prevent Portland from regulating impact of ride-sharing
Why is the fee only on yellow and black car rides, rather than on all cars? Shouldn't we prefer non-private vehicles on the street instead of ones that will do parking?
jakob223··on Unmanned grocery delivery is underway in Arizona
Choose the points of non-smoothness to be in the Bermuda triangle. Everyone knows it's not safe to fly there.
jakob223··on Estimating Value of Facebook by Paying Users to Stop Using It
Consider 2 scenarios:

A) I pay you $x per year not to listen to music on youtube.

B) I give you $x per year. Simoultaneously, Youtube starts charging $x per year to listen to music.

Is there much of a difference between them?

jakob223··on Google Optimize now free for everyone
Not necessarily - if I have a website that is trying to offer information to people about something, then it's better for everyone if it's more navigable/undersatandable, which session length / clicks might be a proxy for.

That said, it certainly can be.

jakob223··on Using a virus to kill what antibiotics can’t
Can you link to some information on that?
jakob223··on Cluster and app management services in Docker Cloud are shutting down on May 21
What exactly is docker cloud and how does it fit in the docker workflow?
jakob223··on Rent out GPUs to AI researchers and make ~2x more than mining cryptocurrencies
Consensus for every computation would be 2x as expensive, but you may be able to achieve something like it with randomly assigning 10% of the calculations to be double-checked, and double=checking more (all?) of a node's computations if it has an inconsistent result.
jakob223··on Economist behind Uber study admits error, adjusts numbers
Since nobody seems to have any idea how much these things actually pay after costs (see: this correction and the original study), it's plausible that people would expect this to pay more than it does.
jakob223··on Dirt Poor: Have Fruits and Vegetables Become Less Nutritious?
Does "organic" include GMO-free? I thought it just meant pesticide-free, and I don't take any issue with GMO foods.
jakob223··on Big tech is built on predatory pricing
ergh why are we reinventing buses as an app
jakob223··on The Incredible Shrinking Airline Seat
Those are the same thing.
jakob223··on Security Keys
If you just use the yubikey to store passwords, though, then you're vulnerable to a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_attack .
jakob223··on Making Visible Watermarks More Effective
But a malicious person in Guatemala would have to first fly to wherever you live, then throw a brick individually through each window they wanted to break. With smart locks, that same individual can throw tens of thousands of bricks through tens of thousands of windows without even leaving their desk.
jakob223··on Vi is not vim
>No syntax highlighting

>If you still struggle with syntax then please use syntax highlighting, it will help those special words stand out.

I find syntax-highlighted code far easier to read, in part because it becomes less just a blob of amorphous text. Our eyes are better at noticing blobs of text that are green than blobs of text which happen to be preceded by a "//" or some such.

jakob223··on Google’s native ad blocker for Chrome shows up in Android developer build
I find the ones on youtube less annoying than the ones on an article for some reason.
jakob223··on USPS loses millions each year on local delivery of mail from abroad (2014)
They have to offer reduced price mail through this treaty, and they'd rather do the ePacket thing which is less of a loss.
jakob223··on Can Neural Networks Crack Sudoku?
I don't know that neural netowrks are particularly "simpler" than SAT solvers. They're both complex general tools with different requirements of problem knowledge.
jakob223··on Apple Is Trying to Make iMessages More Private
I guess if the devices are only willing to share keys with other devices which can individually prove they have the iCloud password. I wonder if it's an online procedure or if they just upload the keys to iCloud, encrypted with the user's iCloud password.
jakob223··on Apple Is Trying to Make iMessages More Private
What's to stop apple from registering another device on your account, which will get the shared keys?

color me skeptical.
