jakestein··on We’re in the Middle of a Data Engineering Talent Shortage
I agree that it's a bad idea to use "janitor" as a disparaging term, and that was very far away from my intention. If that was what you took away from reading it, then that's more evidence that I didn't do a great job with writing the original draft.

Here's the original paragraph for reference:

Data engineers are the janitors who keep your data clean and flowing. Insights are great, and you need them. But to deliver insights at scale, you need data infrastructure. That’s delivered by data engineering. It’s not as fun to talk about as D3 visualizations and business intelligence dashboards, but it’s every bit as important.

jakestein··on We’re in the Middle of a Data Engineering Talent Shortage
Hey I'm the author of this blog post and the CEO of the company that did the benchmark report. That was a very poor choice of words on my part, and I appreciate you flagging it. I reworked the paragraph to remove the janitor comment and (hopefully) make it clearer.

I can verify this [1]. The management team does not have a sense of humor.

jakestein··on Show HN – Apptimize: A/B testing for native Android, iOS apps
Interesting, Artisan mobile is also in this space http://useartisan.com/
jakestein··on Cohort analysis - User retention in a Rails application
This seems very cool. We (www.rjmetrics.com) provide a hosted tool to get metrics like cohort analysis out of the data you've already got on your database. In addition to cohorts, you can also get metrics on time between events, repeat event rates, and segmented lists of lapsed users.

We've got a lot of different visualization options, and we can consolidate multiple data sources (ie Mongo, MySQL, spreadsheets, Google Analytics) into a single reporting portal.

jakestein··on Ask HN: What's your startup's analytics setup?
I'm a cofounder of rjmetrics. You probably won't be surprised to learn that we have all of our data from billing, product usage, google analytics, zendesk, hubspot, fogbugz, etc in our rjmetrics account. We give access to all of our employees and our board.

There are a lot of great tools out there, and we think ours is best at consolidating, analyzing, and acting on the data that ecommerce and saas companies have. We don't collect new data for you, which is the focus of a lot of the other tools mentioned on this thread.

My cofounder actually has a guest post on techcrunch today about the things to consider when buying or building an analytical system and trying to create a data driven company: http://techcrunch.com/2012/10/27/lessons-for-data-driven-bus...

jakestein··on [dead]
I don't think Gruber's objection is that it's an incoherent position, rather that it violates Stallman's stated morals.

It's along the lines of being against killing animals for food, but eating a burger because your friend bought the meat and grilled it for you.

jakestein··on The Patent Pledge

jakestein··on Why Your Startup Needs a Visual Dashboard
Yes. My company (RJMetrics) sells BI and dashboard software to web businesses. Our biggest competitor by far is internal development.

Linke to the PLoS article that this post summarizes: http://www.plosmedicine.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal...
jakestein··on "Rate My Startup" Post Policy
I have no first hand knowledge, but I would be surprised if a 2.5 year old account with 250 of karma (like you do) is not considered established enough for this purpose.
jakestein··on Apple Is No Longer Bundling Flash Player With Mac OS X
The difference as I see it is that Snow Leopard will get the security updates via Apple's Software Update program. You're on your own for updating flash player, or at best you get notified by Adobe that a new version of flash player is installed.

Apple can control or at least heavily influence the updates for Snow Leopard. It can't for flash.

jakestein··on Ask HN: What are the necessary skills for the "Business Person"?
1. Before we had a product I spent a lot of time taking care of administrative stuff that was necessary to get the company going. I also wrote the copy for the website. The biggest thing though is to talk to the people who you will eventually sell to and see if they are interested in what you are building.

2. Practice is a huge part of it. I also think its worthwhile to learn about the training programs bigger companies put their employees through. I have a few cd's from http://www.sandler.com/ that have been very helpful. If you have a friend who works in sales, they probably have a bunch of these.

jakestein··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
RJMetrics is looking for a developer in the Philadelphia Area. We build BI software, make rap videos, guest post on Techcrunch, and have been doubling revenue quarter over quarters since we got started.

jakestein··on 190% Improvement In Landing Page Conversions By Removing Content
Chris, I agree. We are definitely going to follow this up with more analysis on the conversion rates on the next step of our funnel. We won't have results for that for a while though because: 1)It will be a partially manual process to match up conversations with prospects to demo form completions because the form completer often introduces us to a different person, so we can't do a simple email comparison between our form completions and our CRM 2)Conversations with prospects sometimes don't take place until weeks or even a month or two after the form is filled out.

I wouldn't be surprised if the quality of the leads goes down somewhat, but my guess is that the overall effect will be dramatically positive.
