jagaerglad··on What are people doing? Live-ish estimates based on global population dynamics
the dancing or partying ones, although admittedly we all scroll the phone more
jagaerglad··on Why I Am Not Going to Buy a Computer (1987) [pdf]
which do you recommend? I do "note to self" in messaging apps and the search is alright but I guess there are better alternatives
jagaerglad··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
Ok yes very good point you're right. What often happened in the olden times was that science took the shape of art, or religious or ideological conviction drove tireless creation.

Let's say science is left to the robots and the lack of "laundry" never leads to people's suffering, never leads to people asking the big questions about life, etc (I was making big assumptions about AI-keeps-us-as-pets, life in abundance, lack of common threats or conflicts etc). What art is there to create, sans banana stuck to the wall? Somebody in the thread joked about being fed through a tube in a pod or something

But yeah in such a case there will probably still be some fire art about the alienation implied by merely being a human. In the end, no AI can experience being a human that was replaced by AI. Given the vestigial remains of our by then atrophied intelligence can appreciate it

jagaerglad··on DeepMind releases Lyria 2 music generation model
I don't think there would be any art or writing to do if there was absolutely no "laundry and dishes", conflict, either. The Wall-e future seems more consistent with that honestly, but maybe I'm just revealing an ugly part of my own personality
jagaerglad··on Scientists: Protein IL-17 fights infection, acts on the brain, inducing anxiety
this is rather amazing, I've always thought that my observation that I feel better in my brain after a good fever has to be imagination

jagaerglad··on Chemists Invent Drugs and Drugs Save Lives
this hits close to home for me as well, was very into chemistry as a kid and wanted to do various experiments but no chemical whatsoever was possible to get hands on. Never got past the baking powder in water and trying to create hydrogen with water and a battery-phase
jagaerglad··on Anki – Powerful, intelligent flash cards
I have used anki for 4-5 years now, ~50% of days. I have a tiny worry that there is a "google effect"¹ of sorts associated with Anki. Before, in high school, I used to just read the chapter in the course book and then do well enough on the exam. In university, I also do well enough on the exams, however, I feel like I'm not learning the material/the bigger picture as well. For one, reading the book chapters takes so much more time when you're adding cards in between, watching a lecture video takes about twice the time of the video length. It's easy that the task becomes "creating cards" instead of "learning". I might be doing it wrong, adding too many cards, not reading the chapter and then summarizing it by adding cards. Still, the thought has struck me a couple of times, if I was braver I would stop using Anki and just do a lot of the practical stuff the knowledge would be useful for and let my brain do the filtering

jagaerglad··on Decipherment of Old Persian
Can't say much about the linked page but one could read the article[0] about the same topic on Encyclopedia Iranica, which is a better source since it's compiled and edited by scholars in history, linguistics, iranian studies etc. Haven't read them myself but they both mention the epigraphist Grotenfrend at least

jagaerglad··on Helium is essential but nonrenewable and difficult to recycle
if all "you or I" wash at home then that's the actual "orders of magnitude more runoff waste" compared to if everybody did it at the car wash. Car washes have to purify the water since it's actually possible to do it there since all the washes happen at the same place
jagaerglad··on Helium is essential but nonrenewable and difficult to recycle
An aside but another good reason to not wash your car is leeching harmful stuff in the environment, car washes have to purify the waste water where I'm from at least
jagaerglad··on Python 3.13 Gets a JIT
Can someone explain what a JIT compiler means in the case of an interpreted language?
jagaerglad··on Qanat
Just a minor off topic pet peeve of mine, but why not keep calling the language that Persians speak "Persian" in English? Just how it doesn't feel entirely right to suddenly start calling Spanish "Español" instead in English, or Swedish as "Svenska" and so on. I've met so many people not realizing the endonym "farsi" is just a (for some reason) new word in English used for the already well established name for the Persian language
jagaerglad··on To make dishwashers great again? (2020)
I poured mine in an old plastic soda bottle which makes pouring into the compartment very quick and convenient
jagaerglad··on Unpacking Elixir: Syntax
That is actually very smart and helpful, thanks! :) My only gripe with autokey is that it's the only thing holding me back from wayland. Hawck is supposed to work with wayland but I never got it to work, was a while ago I tried though

https://github.com/snyball/Hawck

jagaerglad··on Unpacking Elixir: Syntax
I use Ctrl+Alt as a substitute for Alt Gr making it feel as natural as typing any other shift-bound special character on the right side of keyboard

It's standard on windows but I have to resort to a hacky solution to make it work on linux unfortunately (still don't have a nice way of doing it cleanly so suggestions are welcome, currently it's an autokey script where e.g. ctrl+alt+0 prints '}', which isn't elegant, doesn't work in wayland etc)

jagaerglad··on Why a cancer scare around aspartame is mostly unfounded
Cancer or not, perhaps it is also healthier for our brains to not constantly be tricked that they found a nice high calorie food item? It feels that it would become like food-tiktok, dopamine "addiction" etc. Sure, perhaps overweight people can benefit from sugar free alternatives temporarily as a remedy to lose weight.

Personally as someone who eats very clean and unprocessed, I like to take the sugar calorie consequence of sweet things I might eat like fruits and the occasional pastry or soda

jagaerglad··on Loss of smell may be an early sign of brain diseases
Yes I noticed the same, I had always thought that my hometown had very clean air (which by comparison it has) and that's why I never could smell pollution. After some staying at home during the pandemic, even the clean modern cars that passed every ten minutes or so on the calm suburb road REEKED of burning hydrocarbons. Going near the main road was terrible. Now again I can't smell the cars, the main road feels like clean fresh air (even though there are way more cars) maybe if a small motorbike drives by I can smell it
jagaerglad··on Ask HN: Stock Android phone free of bloatware?
Ok thanks for sharing, this was all new to me. Honestly it was just such a good user experience for me with their app store and just installing all apps seamlessly. It all just worked. Not sure if other custom ROMs have similar experiences since that's the only one I tried

The only reason I sold my FP4 and went back to samsung and their android experience was that everybod kept complaininh about mic quality during calls and I couldn't seem to fix it. Seemed like others also had similar issues

jagaerglad··on Shifting views about psychedelic drugs require a new category for them
I have been struggling a lot with dating. Despite being a quite social, and often popular guy to be around, there has been some block/hump that always stood in the way of dating. Funnily enough it struck me some weeks ago that I probably have to go on a psychadelic trip to rewire my brain to be able to show my interest romatically to others. What I'm scared of is the possibility of it having some other undesired effect though

I had a similar experience with dancing though. Thought I hated it, and I always had to force myself to do it, until I started (modestly) drinking alcohol. My body would dance for me and I would enjoy it. The effect more or less stuck around and I even genuinely have days of more confidence after a night with alcohol.

All of this is mildly depressing though. It feels as though we are just our brains (maybe obviously), but just that we're the strange effects of the functions of a non-magical/soul-less organ in our heads primarily just meant to steer our bodies. Those thoughts make drugs both existentially liberating but at the same time also "imprisoning" for me

jagaerglad··on Ask HN: Stock Android phone free of bloatware?
Did you ever try /e/OS? All my banking apps surprisingly worked on FP4 with /e/OS
jagaerglad··on Manjaro is a free and open source Linux operating system that emphasizes privacy
I don't like to fiddle with my computer too much, I just installed arch with KDE using their installer and kind of forgot about it for many months and it just worked™ (until I broke it myself in a way any distro would have broken, but that's a different story).

The only thing with arch that is blocking a non-techy/fiddle-unfriendly person is the installation process (even with the script, knowing what a DE is, making a conscious decision which to choose, KDE etc)

jagaerglad··on Tackling plastic pollution: ‘We can't recycle our way out of this’
there are many additives in plastics so often they're not only hydrocarbons. BPA, PCB, flame retardants, colors and UV protection, etc
jagaerglad··on Venetians are pondering raising their entire city
We are talking about a city that a quarter million people call home, not an amusement park that needs to adapt to changing conditions
jagaerglad··on Technology of water in ancient Iran from prehistory to the Islamic Golden Age
Yes the country is for ever Iran, for all iranians of different ethnicities. The connotation in tourists's mind about "Iran" has to change, were the country to be called Persia today, it would have the same negative sound to it like Iran (arguably) does for some today. Also, most people would be able to distinguish a nazi use of the term Aryan and it's original meaning so that's really not a problem with the name Iran

I know that you're not confusing this but as some others might: Persian language is of the Persian people (although there are many non-persian L2 speakers), it should rightfully still called that and should not be confused with the (settled at this point) debate about the name of the country as a whole

jagaerglad··on Technology of water in ancient Iran from prehistory to the Islamic Golden Age

jagaerglad··on What Is Anglish?
That's an afterthought, in English you say Levantine Arabic or Egyptian Arabic, or Brazilian Portuguese, Bavarian etc not "Bayrisch" or "al-lahje shamiye" or something else
jagaerglad··on What Is Anglish?
Although vaguely off topic, one thing that grinds my gears is calling Persian "Farsi". Nobody goes around saying "hello I speak Español" but for some reason, rather recently, it has become popular to use the endonym for Persian in place of the already well established "Persian". I've more than once met people not knowing they are the same thing which is sad because using the new word loses well-rooted associations like with famous authors and other cultural elements etc
