jadyoyster··on I built a GPU back end for Emacs
This is exactly how I use LLMs. "I wonder if it's possible to ...", and if I get something that seems to work or passes the test suite that gives me lots of added confidence that an approach is worth spending proper engineering time on.

Or sometimes you get suggested a method or library you've never heard of, opening your horizons.

jadyoyster··on Mayor of Paris removed parking spaces, reduced the number of cars
Imagine how "hounded" everyone else feels by driver friendly polies in other cities.
jadyoyster··on Leaving the U.S. for the Netherlands
Because Belgium didn't have capital gains tax it was actually common to (fake) retire to Belgium for wealthy individuals. There's supposed to be a capital gains tax from 2026 though.
jadyoyster··on Uber is turning data about trips and takeout into insights for marketers
Exactly, all you need to start is "a significant amount of people from this area want to go to those areas".
jadyoyster··on Uber is turning data about trips and takeout into insights for marketers
There should be a law forcing ride hailing apps to give anonymized ride data to local governments so that they can plan public transport better. If they sell it to marketers they must be able to do this technically.
jadyoyster··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
Surprisingly mobile networks seemed to stay up in Portugal. I'm not sure to what extent and if they lasted for the whole duration of the blackout. They definitely limited consumer use though.
jadyoyster··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
You can book a seat for an instrument. I've seen EXTRA, ITEM SEAT mentioned as name for one particular airline but maybe it can get more specific with others?
jadyoyster··on In Defense of Y'All

You might just not notice it.

jadyoyster··on USC Student Rocket Group Shatters International Amateur Space Record
Even if they were high enough they would just fall back to earth. There are lots of videos explaining orbit, this one looks good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcvnfQlz1x4
jadyoyster··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
I think if you tried them out you'll find these bike paths are not unsafe (and I bet the accident numbers back that up), because it's a whole system. Design like this will have features to force drivers to take slow turns when crossing the bike paths, and they are raised so that it's clear to drivers they don't have right of way.

NL always goes for the transit stops that poke out like you mention as well when possible.

jadyoyster··on A common urban intersection in the Netherlands (2018)
That's probably an Amsterdam thing, smaller Dutch cities are lovely and awesome to cycle in. Rotterdam was also not enjoyable to cycle due to aggressive drivers when I visited.
jadyoyster··on Windows 11 vs. Ubuntu 24.10 Performance For Intel Core Ultra 7 Lunar Lake
I think it must somehow use a recent kernel, otherwise Lunar Lake wouldn't be supported?
jadyoyster··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
I like that they do it this way. The bins always had plenty of space when I took the option, and otherwise you travel with a backpack which fits under the seat in front of you for the lowest ticket price.

The boarding and disembarking procidures are also much faster with Ryanair in part thanks to this policy, the other being air stairs boarding from both ends of the plane.

They offer a cheap 10kg hold luggage option in case the overhead bins have been sold out or you need to take a small suitcase with forbidden items.

jadyoyster··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
IIRC the difference with the first option is that you get seat selection too, but in reality, only amongst the cheapest seats.
jadyoyster··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
WizzAir is even worse than Ryanair with dark patterns in my experience. Super annoying.
jadyoyster··on Ryanair – when every page is a dark pattern
I don't think Ryanair does this.
jadyoyster··on Show HN: I made a split keyboard for large palms
I was taught touch typing with pinky on the Z and index on the V for the bottom row. I think that's how it's designed to work, and that in this context stagger is a historical accident that ergonomic keyboards fix.
jadyoyster··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
> Don't people bike because they want to get fit?

People bike because they want to get around. Also, a bicycle is a lot less bulky and more quiet than a motorbike and it doesn't require a license.

jadyoyster··on Earl Grey tea intoxication (2022)
You're right, I should have added genetics and disease as well! The gist is if your urine is of a light color and you have no issues there is no need to worry or try to force yourself to drink.
jadyoyster··on Earl Grey tea intoxication (2022)
The idea that you need to drink liters of water a day is a modern invention due to misreading of research. It completely depends on the weather, exertion, and how much water is in the food you eat.

jadyoyster··on Privacy is priceless, but Signal is expensive
SMS would be a complete non-starter in Europe. Many (no?) countries lack unlimited texting plans.
jadyoyster··on Most of us won't be inventing little languages (2004)
I may be wrong but I think that's not the view of the modern PL community. If your API talks about values, combinators, and has (implicit) laws about them then I would certainly consider that a language.
jadyoyster··on The Flox Open Beta
You could make it look like manually installing but have it change the definition of the environment, like NPM does with package.json. It wouldn't be distinguishable for someone who doesn't care about Nix.
jadyoyster··on German cartel office initiates proceedings against PayPal
Many European countries have secure quick payment solutions which interface with the banking system without giving away sensitive information. All that I've used require you to use your phone or an OTP device/printed card to authenticate.

The downside is that it's not as fast as having username and password filled in like you can do with PayPal, and that these only work for the specific country.

jadyoyster··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
Before most-recent-order was the default I turned it on manually, so it's most certainly not every user.
jadyoyster··on Lawmakers Drink Raw Milk to Celebrate Legality, Become Immediately Sick (2016)
Are you sure that is raw milk in the machines? In my country "fresh milk" is pasteurized. Note that pasteurized milk tastes better than sterilized milk and still needs to be refrigerated.
jadyoyster··on LaBanquePostale payments request bank password
Doesn't Sofort actually log in to your bank website and use it as if it were a human?
jadyoyster··on Elon Musk invited to a video call into Volkswagen executive conference
These regulations are for not just for "the environment" but also for local air quality, i.e. the air you breathe in. Cities don't have much industry but they do have a lot of cars.
jadyoyster··on Why we don’t understand heavier-than-air flight
Actually meant to post this link, sorry! https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/wrong1.html
jadyoyster··on Why we don’t understand heavier-than-air flight
This page explain things well: https://www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/UEET/StudentSite/dynamicso...

AFAIK the wing shape thing is about reducing drag (turbulence?)–not essential but hard to fly well without a nicely shaped wing.
