jaden··on Inbox, diary, to-do list: now choose just two
> I can't maintain a TODO list and I've always had mine grow too big. I end up having to drag 5-10 things to the next day every day after a month or so. I know it's because I'm horrible at prioritization and I do best when given a list of crap to do and can pick and choose what I feel like doing when I feel like doing it.

I used to have this same problem. My solution is to push items into the future if it's clear I'm not going to be able to get to them the next day. Sort of like GTD's tickler file. As long as your todo list tool allows you to add dates, you can view only items due today. That's made having a large list of tasks much easier to manage, because I only see what I have to work on today.

jaden··on Moreutils: A collection of Unix tools that nobody thought to write long ago
I thought the same thing. What's wrong with this approach?

  cat myfile.txt | awk '{do_stuff()}' | sort -u | column --table > new-myfile.txt
jaden··on YouTube-dl's first release since June 2021
It definitely fixed the issue for me. I was stuck at ~50kb/s with youtube-dl but switching to yt-dlp increased speeds dramatically.
jaden··on No Easter Eggs in Curl
It looks like they were removed several years ago.

> Update 12-04-2017: This feature was removed in PHP 5.5.

jaden··on Appflowy – open-source Notion Alternative
It looks like this is self-hosted only as opposed to a more direct alternative to Notion.
jaden··on Spending $5k to learn how database indexes work
Just to clarify, Hetzner now has Cloud servers in the US. Dedicated servers are still only available in Europe.
jaden··on Pizzatime: Throw a pizza party for your remote team
That's a great idea. We've been trying to find a better way to socialize as a remote team and playing a casual video game with local chat is brilliant.
jaden··on Pizzatime: Throw a pizza party for your remote team
And the alternative of having each person order what they want and expensing it isn't much better. You don't pay anything, but it forces everyone to spend a fair amount of time. Plus accounting for different timezones means everyone isn't eating at the same time.
jaden··on Maildog – Hosting email forwarding service on AWS with GitHub Actions
There's a typo in the URL. It's https://improvmx.com/ and is free for 1 domain, $9/month for up to 100 domains & 100 aliases per domain.
jaden··on Show HN: Weekend project, shows when the next season of your TV show premieres
You might want to consider using https://thetvdb.com/ for your data source. It still has problems, but overall it seems to be more accurate than IMDb.
jaden··on McDonald’s Theory on How Best to Rescue Conversations
It's been on Hulu for a few years, just FYI.
jaden··on Ask HN: Do You Journal a Lot?
Every day for the past 12 years and frequently even before then. I've found it astonishing how much I learn about myself by reading past entries. It's also surprising how much I would have forgotten without it.
jaden··on Show HN: NFreezer – Encrypted-at-rest remote backup tool
Duplicacy is a separate backup tool, but has a confusingly similar name to duplicity. I believe its chunking algorithm means large renamed files aren't re-transferred.
jaden··on Over 80% of Covid-19 patients in a hospital study have Vitamin D deficiency
Over 80% of COVID-19 patients are right-handed too.
jaden··on ‘It’s a superpower’: how walking makes us healthier, happier and brainier (2019)
I assumed the reading was while on public transportation.
jaden··on Replacing Ansible with salt-ssh
I had never heard of Mitogen and installed it a few minutes ago based on your recommendation. The performance improvement is massive. Much obliged.
jaden··on ClassicPress – A Fork of WordPress 4.9
Agreed. I also wonder about their staying power for the long term.
jaden··on Backing up data like the adult I supposedly am
Last I checked BackBlaze only kept deleted files for a max of 30 days, making it a non-starter for my needs. I'm not sure if that's still the case.
jaden··on Don't Get Stuck
Thanks for sharing the source of this quote. I've heard it numerous times but never knew it was from Thomas J. Watson.
jaden··on Tiny Tiny RSS
I haven't used tt-rss but FreshRSS has been working phenomenally for me over the past several months. I don't even use a mobile app because the web site works perfectly well on mobile. I have a few minor quibbles like GitHub release feeds having broken favicon images, but overall I'm extremely pleased with it.
jaden··on Tired of note-taking apps
ActionOutline was my go-to native outliner on Windows.

jaden··on Google Search Upgrades Make It Harder for Websites to Win Traffic
Looks like ads and affiliate links.

jaden··on Ask HN: File Sync App Recommendations for 2020
Part of the cost of Google Drive is subsidized by data mining, so it may be hard to find an equivalent service with "good" corporate behavior at the same price.

However, I've been looking at pCloud and it checks most of the boxes, though I haven't tested with a million files. 2 TB is $10/month and they have lifetime deals. For an additional fee you can get client-side encryption.

jaden··on Expose – A fully open-source ngrok alternative written in PHP
Thanks! It even has a docker container for easy deployment.
jaden··on Expose – A fully open-source ngrok alternative written in PHP
Is there a separate Go pgrok, or was that a typo?

The reason for asking is I'd like to find a self-hosted ngrok solution for development.

jaden··on T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T phone calls are failing across the US
Several other networks are showing up on downdetector.com too, including Sprint, U.S. Cellular and Consumer Cellular.
jaden··on Rich-markdown-editor: react Dropbox Paper clone
Based on the URL of getoutline.com I was hoping it would be an alternative to Workflowy or Dynalist. I wish there were more web outliners.

But for a self-hosted markdown wiki, this looks great. A local authentication option would make it even better (currently uses Slack or Google OAuth).

jaden··on SaltStack Mining Attack
I don't understand this claim. ansible-vault uses AES256 which is anything but homebrew.
jaden··on Apple Card
What's the 2.5% back card? The highest flat rate cash back card I know of is Citi Double Cash at 2%.
jaden··on Google Voice is killing SMS voicemail transcripts and Chrome Extension texting
I've been using voip.ms too. It's $0.85/month for the number plus usage costs ($0.009/minute for calls, free SMS but eventually will be $0.01/text).
